     I am looking for a post-doctoral research associate 
in computational neuroscience, starting August/September, 1996.
Current research in my lab is focused on two kinds of topics: 
coherent cortical oscillations and their functional roles;
working-memory processes and their neuromodulation. Projects are
expected to be carried out in close interactions and 
collaborations with experimental neurobiologists. 
Candidates with strong theoretical background, analytical and 
simulation skills, and knowledge in neuroscience,  are encouraged 
to apply.

     Brandeis University, near Boston, offers excellent
opportunities in this interdisciplinary field. Other faculty 
members at the Sloan Center include Drs. Laurence Abbott,

TASK: Participate in the design and development of state-of-the-art
systems for data mining and knowledge discovery.  While the job will have 
have significant research aspects, the focus will be on the development of 
prototypes to be used in production setting. 
	Our current projects include predictive customer modeling 
and analysis of healthcare information.  We are applying multiple learning 
and discovery methods to very large, high-dimensional real-world databases.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Machine Learning or related
fields and 2-3 years of experience, or an M.S. with an equivalent
experience.  The candidate should have experience with a variety of
machine learning algorithms, be familiar with statistical theory, have
practical experience with databases, and be proficient with
Web/Internet tools.  Excellent coding skills in C/Unix environment and
ability to quickly pick up new systems and languages are needed.  Good
communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and good
system maintenance practices are very desirable.

The candidate will join one of the leading R&D teams in the area of data
mining and knowledge discovery.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The conference location is on the mainland of Venice, Italy. The workshop will 
be held in the Ramada Hotel, in S. Giuliano, near the International Airport of 
Venice. A number of rooms has been reserved at the Ramada Hotel for the NICROSP 
attendees at the special rates shown in the Hotel Reservation Form. This 
American-style hotel is fully equipped to provide a high comfort during the 
whole stay. Buffet breakfast is included in the hotel rates. Lunches are 
included in the registration fee for registered attendees, as well as coffee 
breaks, entrance to sessions, and one copy of the proceedings. Additional lunch 
tickets for companions may be purchased at the registration desk.
Hotel reservation must be made directly with the Ramada Hotel at S. Giuliano - 
Venice by sending the Hotel Reservation Form (fax is preferred). Reservations 
can be also made by contacting any other Ramada Reservation Center around the 
world and mentioning the special rates for the NICROSP conference.
Reservation deadline is June 21, 1996. After this date, the hotel will not be 
able to guarantee room's availability; should the hotel be completely booked, 
Ramada will suggest equivalent accomodations in nearby hotels.
Disable persons should contact the hotel for possible special requirements.
Ramada Hotel grants the same workshop rates from August 16 till August 26.

TRANSPORTATION
Venice is served by an International Airport (about 15 minutes by car from the 
Ramada Hotel). Flights are daily available from most European towns and from 
some US cities.
A special shuttle service for NICROSP attendees may be organized by the Ramada 
Hotel from/to the airport: since the shuttle fare is fixed and independent from 
the number of passengers, attendees should contact the Ramada Hotel to 
coordinate car pools.
At the airport it is possible to rent a car to reach the Ramada Hotel (guest 
parking is available within the hotel). Maps and directions are available at 
the car rentals. 
Taxi cabs are also available; typical fare from the airport to the Ramada Hotel 
is approximately 40,000 Italian Liras.
Venice has good and frequent international rail connections. Use the Mestre 
station (every train stops there). Taxi cabs are available at the station exit; 
typical fare is approximately 20,000 Italian Liras.
If you decide to drive to the workshop site, ask for a map at the workshop 
secretariat: leave the highway to Venice at the Mestre-Est exit or at the 
Mestre-Ovest exit and, then, follow the map. Guest parking is available within 
the hotel.
The entrance to downtown Venice (piazzale Roma) may be reached by a shuttle 
service for hotel guests (provided by Ramada Hotel at scheduled times), by 
public bus (also available at scheduled times), or by taxi cabs. Public boats 
for downtown Venice and for the laguna islands leave from piazzale Roma.

             RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN NEURAL SYSTEMS

There is a postdoctoral research associate position available
in the electrical and computer engineering department
at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
It is supported by a grant from ARPA to study a neural-style
VLSI vision system in collaboration with a group from Caltech.
We are applying neural techniques to recognize patterns
in handwritten documents and in remote-sensing images.

We are also applying for new funding in the area of
real-time underwater sound processing.
The project will involve applying an existing VME-based
neural network learning system to several demanding problems in
signal processing.  These include adaptive non-linear equalization
of underwater acoustic communication channels and magnetic recording
channels.  It is likely also to involve integrating the learning electronics
with micro-machined sonic transducers directly on silicon.

The successful candidate will have skills in some or all of
the following areas: 1) analog and digital VLSI design and test,
2) signal, sound and image processing, 3) neural network
processing of complex data, and 4) working at the system
level in a UNIX/C/C++ environment.

ABSTRACT:

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) can learn to perform finite
state computations.  It is shown that an RNN performing a finite 
state computation must organize its state space to mimic the 
states in the minimal deterministic finite state machine (DFA) 
which can perform that computation, and a precise description of 
the attractor structure of such systems is given.  This 
knowledge effectively predicts activation space dynamics, 
which allows one to understand RNN computation dynamics in 
spite of complexity of activation dynamics.  As a corollary of
our main theorem, we prove that the only formal languages which
RNNs are able to robustly recognize are those recognizable by
DFA (i.e. the regular languages).  By elucidating the necessary 
and sufficient dynamical properties which an RNN must possess 
in order to perform a DFA computation, we provide a framework 
for discussing the relationship between symbolic (algorithmic, 
finite state) and subsymbolic (dynamic, continuous phase space) 
aspects of computation in physical systems.

This theory also provides a theoretical framework for understanding 
finite state machine extraction techniques and can be used to 
improve training methods for RNNs performing DFA computations.  
This provides an example of a successful top-down approach to 
understanding a general class of complex systems that have not been 
explicitly designed, e.g. systems that have evolved or learned their 
internal structure.

Adaption and learning in multi-agent systems  establishes  a  relatively new 
but significant topic in  Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Multi-agent systems 
typically are  very complex and  hard to specify  in their  behavior.  It is 
therefore broadly agreed in both the Distributed AI and the Machine Learning 
community that there is  the need to endow these systems with the ability to 
adapt and learn, that is,  to self-improve their future performance. Despite 
this agreement, however,  adaption and learning  in  multi-agent systems has 
been widely neglected in AI until a few years ago.  On the one hand, work in 
Distributed AI  mainly concentrated on developing  multi-agent systems whose 
activity repertoires and coordination mechanisms are  more or less fixed and 
thus less robust and effective particularly in changing environments. On the 
other  hand,  work  in  Machine  Learning  mainly  concentrated  on learning 
techniques and methods  in single-agent  or isolated-system settings.  Today 
this situation has changed  considerably,  and there is an increasing number 
of researchers focussing on the intersection of  Distributed AI and  Machine 
Learning.

Systems''  held  August 21, 1995  in Montreal, Canada,  as part of  the 14th 
International Joint  Conference on  Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-95).  The 
papers  reflect both  the  broad spectrum of  and the  progress  made in the 
available  work  on  learning  and  adaption  in  multi-agent systems.  They 
address this topic  from different points of view,  and describe and experi-
mentally and/or theoretically analyze  new  adaption and learning approaches 
for situations in which several agents have to cooperate or to compete  with 
each other in order to solve a given task or set of tasks.  Additionally, to 
assist the  novice reader,  an introductory and motivational article  is in-
cluded which provides a  compact guide  to this topic.  This article takes a 
general look at multi-agent systems and  at  adaption and learning  therein,

Neural networks provide a powerful new technology to model and control
nonlinear and complex systems. In this book, the authors present a
detailed formulation of neural networks from the information-theoretic
viewpoint. They show how this perspective provides new insights into
the design theory of neural networks. In particular they show how these
methods may be applied to the topics of supervised and unsupervised
learning including feature extraction, linear and non-linear
independent component analysis, and Boltzmann machines.

Readers are assumed to have a basic understanding of neural networks,

THREE GRADUATE RESEARCHERS (PH.D. STUDENTS) IN CONNECTIONIST MODELLING IN
PSYCHOLOGY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Our group has job openings for three graduate researchers (Ph.D. students,
or 'Onderzoekers-in-Opleiding' in Dutch) in connectionist modelling at the
Graduate Research Institute for Experimental Psychology (EPOS) of the Dutch
Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The projects are located at the
University of Amsterdam and Leiden University.
      The Graduate Research Institute EPOS was established by the
University of Amsterdam, the Free University Amsterdam and Leiden
University to foster and strengthen research and graduate training in the
area of experimental psychology. The indiduvidual projects are funded by
the Netherlands Society for Scientific Research (NWO) and form part of a
larger research initiative 'Dynamic processes in self-organizing networks
that interact with the environment'. One four-year postdoc has already been
assigned to this project (this position is already filled). Several other
graduate researchers within EPOS are working on similar projects
(connectionist modelling and experimental psychology).

CONDITIONS
Each project runs for four years, starting 1 July 1996 at the earliest, and
is expected to lead to a Ph.D. at the end of the four-year period. Full
scholarships are available for each project to the amount of DFL 2100
(about $1320) per month in the first year, gradually increasing to DFL 3770
(about $2360) per month in the fourth year. (These figures are before
taxes; a typical salary in the first year, after taxes, would be DFL 1680,
but this depends on the experience of the applicant.) Succesful candidates
will be required to move to the Netherlands. They will be required to
follow and complete a number of graduate courses. In most cases, the
graduate researchers are asked to participate in teaching of undergraduate
students. This teaching load will be small and concerns only courses that
are within their field of research.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Excellent command of Dutch (or English) is necessary. Applicants from
computer science, physics, mathematics, or engineering must bear in mind
that a strong, demonstrable  background in psychology or related fields is
necessary for these projects. 


PROJECT 1. 'ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR AFFECTIVE PROCESSES'(QUOTE REF.

Description: Development of neural network models for direct and indirect
affective processes. This work also has a strong neuroscience component. It
builds on modelling work by the project supervisors (CALM approach to
modelling). The simulations will keep pace with experimental research that
occurs simultaneously in our group. 

Specific requirements: Master's (drs.) degree in experimental psychology.
Strong interest in experimental research (especially from the cognitive
neuroscience perspective). Experience with emotions research is desirable,
as is experience with computer programming.

PROJECT 2. 'ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR MEMORY PROCESSES' (QUOTE REF.

Description: Development of neural network models for implicit and explicit
memory phenomena and certain memory pathologies. Goal is implementation of
a recently developed theoretical model of anterograde and retrograde
amnesia. This implementation builds on existing work by the project
supervisors (TraceNet and CALM approach to modelling, specifically
TraceLink). Simulation results will be compared with research on memory in
amnesic patients.

Specific requirements: Master's (drs.) degree in experimental psychology or
cognitive (neuro-)science. Strong interest in theoretical and empirical
modelling of cognitive functions. Knowledge of neuroanatomy and
neuropsychology is desirable, as is experience with psychological
experimentation. Experience with computer programming is required
(preferably in C).

non-stable activation patterns. The simulations will keep pace with

Specific requirements: Master's (drs.) degree in cognitive science or
experimental psychology, or in theoretical or medical biology or physics
with a strongly interdisciplinary orientation and demonstrable interest in
experimental research in psychology. Experience with computer programming
is required.

With the rapid growth of the Internet, the information explosion is
becoming an immediate concern for everyone.  Both the number of users and
the amount of accessible information on the internet have been growing
exponentially.

The sheer joy of browsing the world and the frustration of not finding the
right nugget of information have attracted researchers from many fields to
the problem of gathering knowledge from a network.  What can AI researchers
bring to the problem?  Are we just trying to justify the time we waste
surfing the net by calling it research? Or will software agents (or some
other AI techniques) succeed where traditional Information Retrieval
technology has stalled?

The Workshop

In the workshop, we hope to address some of the following questions in the
context of information gathering work being conducted by AI researchers.
Submitted papers may describe speculative, partial, or completed work,
provided the work has clear, practical implications for other researchers.

The Issues

Submitted papers should address one or more of the following issues.
        1) What are the core technical problems posed by the growth of
                global networks?
        2) What will the future internet or intranet look like?

pages (12 point font). All submissions will be refereed: We expect the

                          WHAT IS INDUCTIVE LEARNING?
                 On the foundations of AI and Cognitive Science

                A workshop in conjunction with the 11th Biennial
                Canadian AI Conference to be held at the Holiday
                Inn on King, Toronto during 21 - 24 May 1996



This workshop is a long overdue attempt to look at the inductive learning
process (ILP) as the central process generating various representations of
objects (events).

To this end one needs, first of all, to have a working definition of the
ILP, which has been lacking. Here is a starting point: ILP is the process
that constructs class representation on the basis of a (small) finite set
of examples, i.e. it constructs the INDUCTIVE class representation. This
class representation must, in essence, provide INDUCTIVE definition (or
construction) of the class.

The constructed class representation, in turn, modifies the earlier
representation of the objects (within the context specified by the ILP).
Thus, any subsequent processes, e.g. pattern recognition, recall, problem
solving, are performed on the basis of the newly constructed object
(event) representations. To put it somewhat strongly, there are only
inductive representations.

Two main and strongly related reasons why ILPs have not been perceived as
the very central processes are a lack of their adequate understanding and a
lack of their satisfactory formal model. Most of the currently popular
formal models of ILPs (including connectionist models) do not provide
satisfactory inductive class representations. One can show that inductive
class representations (in other words, representations of concepts and
categories) cannot be adequately specified within the classical (numeric)
mathematical models.

We encourage all researchers (including g(including graduate students)
seriously interested in the foundations of the above areas to participate
in the workshop. Both theoretical and applied contributions are welcomed
(including, of course, those related to vision, speech, and language).

While extended abstracts will be available at the workshop, we are planning
to publish the expanded and reviewed versions of the presentations as a
special issue of journal Pattern Recognition.

                IDSIA POSTDOC POSITION 

IDSIA, the Swiss machine learning research institute, 
offers a 2-year postdoc position with possibility for 
renewal. Goal of the corresponding research project is to 
analyze, compare, extend, and apply `neural' algorithms for 
unsupervised learning and redundancy reduction. A main focus 
will be on `predictability minimization' (see refs below). 
Application areas include adaptive image pre-processing, 
classification, data compression. Applicants should be 
willing to build on our previous work. The ideal candidate
combines strong mathematical skills and strong programming
skills. 

Switzerland tends to be nice to scientists. It boasts the
highest supercomputing capacity per capita, the most Nobel
prizes per capita (with Sweden), the highest gross national
product per capita (with Luxembourg), and the best chocolate. 
IDSIA is located in beautiful Lugano, capital of scenic Ticino 
(the southern part of Switzerland). Pictures in my home page. 
Milano, Italy's center of fashion and finance, is one hour 
away. CSCS, the Ticino supercomputing center, is nearby.

The 3rd International Workshop on Image and Signal Processing,
IWSIP-96 organised by the Control Systems Centre, UMIST in assosiation
with IEEE Region 8 and co-sponsored by the IEE, IMC and the IEEE Signal
Processing Society, is an International Workshop on theoretical,
experimental and applied signal and image processing. This is a
specialized workshop, which intends to attract high quality research
papers and bring together researchers working in the areas of
signal/image processing from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as
from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, The theme of the 
current workshop is on Advances in Computational Intelligence.

SCOPE:

General Techiques and Algorithms: Adaptive DSP algorithms,
Digital Filter Implementations, Image Analysis, Image Enhancement and
Restoration, Image Understanding.

Technologies: Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, Wavelets, Fractals.

Image Transmission: Encoding/Decoding, Compression, Transmission,
ISDN, Internet, ATM, Modems, Radio, SATCOM and NAV.

Applications: Automotive, Medical, Robotics, Control, Video, TV,
Telepresence, Virtual Reality, Digital Production.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES:

Prospective authors are invited to propose papers in any of the
technical areas listed above, indicating whethear they are intended for
oral/poster presentation. To submit a proposal, prepare a 2-3 page 
summary of the paper including figures and references. Send five 
copies of the paper summary and a cover sheet stating the (1) paper 
title, (2) technical area(s), (3) contact author' s name, (4) address,

Two openings at the Department of Computer Science of the 
University of Geneva (Switzerland) on:

               COMPUTER and BIOLOGICAL VISION

- One post-doc: for a person holding a Ph.D. degree in either 
  Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics, 
  with emphasis on neural networks, dynamic systems, computational 
  neuroscience, and machine vision. Experience with the analysis
  of multidimensional EEG signals would be a plus.

- One assistant (Ph.D. student): for a person holding a Diploma, 
  or Master's degree in Computer Science, or comparable qualification, 
  with experience in neuronal modeling and computer vision.

Project description.
--------------------
Development of neural networks for recognizing multiple objects 
over complex, textured background. 
The basic model, inspired by neurophysiological and psychophysical 
research in human vision, employs networks of oscillatory units 
capable of stimulus-dependent synchronization. Research issues 
include: the design of a complete neural network architecture
employing integrate-and-fire units, the assessment of the role of 
visual attention in modifying neuronal dynamics, and the compatibility 
of the overall model with biological data.
Both candidates will work in collaboration with a third researcher 
at the Brain Mapping Laboratory of the Geneva Cantonal Hospital
(headed by Prof. T.Landis and C. Michael), and will contribute to
the analysis of the data collected through experiments on human 
subjects using EEG-based tomography of brain activity. 

Position profiles.
------------------
Both positions are available *immediately*, for a minimum of 1.5 
years (postdoc) and 2 years (assistant). An extension for another 
2 years is likely. Salaries are approx. CHF 60,000 for the postdoc 
and CHF 58,000 for the assistant (both before taxes). 
Good written/oral knowledge of English is essential. Some knowledge

COGNITIVE NEUROPSYCHOLOGY: Visual word and object recognition.  A
post-doctoral research position is available at the COGNITIVE

The project investigates the role of visual and attentional mechanisms in
word and object recognition.  These issues are addressed principally
through the analysis of the reading and object recognition performance in
brain-damaged subjects with visual neglect and other perceptual disorders.
In addition, computational modeling and functional imaging studies of
visual word recognition are planned.   Individuals with training in visual
