Postdoctoral and Graduate Researcher Positions in Biosequence Analysis at UCSC

We are looking for people with backgrounds in statistics and computer science 
(e.g. machine learning, hidden Markov models, neural networks, speech 
recognition) to design and implement algorithms to find new genes in 
human DNA sequences, and to predict the structure and function of newly 
discovered protein sequences. Working knowledge of molecular biology is 
desired but not required; we can teach you what you need to know to get 
started and then you can learn the rest while you are here.  An introductory

Our biosequence analysis group currently consists of 3 faculty: 
D. Haussler (Computer Science), R. Hughey and K. Karplus (Computer Engineering), 
as well as 8 graduate students, 6 undergraduate students, and a postgraduate
researcher. We have active collaborations with biologists at UCSC, as well
as with groups at Lawrence Berkeley Labs Genome Center, the Sanger
Centre, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.

We have one postdoc position to start Jan. 1, 1997, and have the 
opportunity during this month (before Aug. 1, 1996) to apply for another 
postdoc position that will also start Jan. 1. In addition, we are trying 
to build our graduate program in this area, so we encourage 
post-baccalaureate students to apply to begin graduate study at UCSC in 
this area in Fall 1997. (In exceptional cases we will consider
graduate applications for Jan. 1 or March 31, 1997 as well.)

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The aim of this workshop is to study the neural mechanisms of sensorimotor
coordination in amphibians and other model systems for their intrinsic
interest, as a target for developments in computational neuroscience, and
also as a basis for comparative and evolutionary studies. The list of
subsidiary themes given below is meant to be representative of this
comparative dimension, but is not intended to be exhaustive. The emphasis
(but not the exclusive emphasis) will be on papers that encourage the
dialog between  modeling and experimentation. A decision as to whether or
not to publish a proceedings is still pending.

This workshop is the sequel to four earlier workshops on the general theme
of "Visuomotor Coordination in Frog and Toad: Models and Experiments". The
first two were organized by Rolando Lara and Michael Arbib at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1981) and Mexico City (1982). The
next two were organized by Peter Ewert and Arbib in Kassel and Los Angeles,
respectively, with the Proceedings published as follows:

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Meeting Location and General Information
The Workshop will be held at the Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona, Arizona (a
beautiful small town set in dramatic red hills) immediately following the
Society for Neuroscience meeting in 1996. The 1996 Neuroscience meeting
ends on Thursday, November 21, so workshop participants can fly from
Washington, DC to Phoenix, AZ that evening, meet Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, with a Workshop Banquet on Sunday evening, and fly home on Monday,
November 25th. Paper sessions will be held all day on Friday, on Saturday
afternoon, and all day on Sunday. Poster sessions will be held on Saturday
afternoon and evening. A group field trip is planned for Saturday morning.

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Participation
In order to encourage the participation of graduate students and
postdoctorals, we have arranged for affordable housing, and in addition we
are able to offer a reduced registration fee (see below) thanks to the
generous contribution of the Office of the Associate Provost for Research
and Graduate Studies at Northern Arizona University.

Travel from Phoenix to Sedona
Sedona, AZ is located approximately 100 miles north of Phoenix, where the
nearest major airport  (Sky Harbor) is located. Workshop attendees may wish
to arrange their own transportation (e.g., car rental from Phoenix airport)
from Phoenix to Sedona, or they may use the Workshop Shuttle (estimated
round trip cost $20 US) to Sedona on 21 November, with a return to Phoenix
on 25 November. If you plan to use the Workshop Shuttle, we will need to
know your expected arrival time in Phoenix by 1 October 1996, to ensure
that space is available for you at a convenient time.

Lodging
The following costs are for each night. Since many participants may want to
extend their stay to further enjoy Arizona's scenic beauty, we have
negotiated special rates for additional nights after the end of the
workshop on November 24th. Attendees should make their own booking with the

Thurs.-Fri. (and additional week nights before the workshop) per night:

                   TWO RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Neuroscience  and  AI  are areas in which  the  University  of
Sussex  is  exceptionally  strong.   A  new  interdisciplinary
Centre  has  recently  been  established  to  promote  synergy
between studies of artificial and biological nervous systems.

Applications are invited for two post-doctoral fellowships  to
work  in  an exciting, interactive and unusual environment  in
this interdisciplinary Centre.

POST 1    Computational   Modelling  of   Biological   Sensory
          Processing

                The aim is to understand the neural mechanisms
          underlying  motion  detection.   The  project   will
          involve  tight  coupling of computer  modelling  and
          electrophysiological data.  It  will  feed  directly
          into our work on robot nervous systems.

POST 2    Artificial Evolution of Nervous Systems for Robots

                The aim is to expand the evolutionary robotics
          field  developed at Sussex by evolving  robots  with
          more complex behavioural capabilities, in particular
          to evolve minimally cognitive robots.

Salary will be on the Research and Analogous Faculty Grade  1A
scale  14,317 to 21,519 per annum.  The posts are  available

				MISSION 

One way to cope with the exponential increase in the number of articles 
published in recent years is to ignore most of them. A second, perhaps 
more satisfying, approach is to provide a forum that encourages the 
regular production -- and perusal -- of high-quality survey articles. 
This is especially useful in an inter-disciplinary, evolving field such 
as Neural Computing.

This journal aims to bring the second approach to bear. It is intended to

  + encourage researchers to write good survey papers. 

  + provides an efficiently searchable repository -- perhaps the first 
    that comes to mind -- for researchers to look at in times of need.

		      FORMS & ATTACHMENTS

Survey papers may take the form of an ESSAY or a COMPENDIUM. ATTACHMENTS to 
an accepted paper -- optional to the authors -- allow use of the 
capabilities of the web to connect to several kinds of material closely 
related to the original paper. A clear separation is made between 
attachments (which are unrefereed and changable) and the main paper (which 
is refereed and not changable). See the web site for more details.

			HOW TO SUBMIT

Electronic submissions (in postscript format) are strongly encouraged, to 
any one of the editors based on matching area (see web site for listing of 
areas of editors). A Latex style file will be available for the NCS format. 
See the web site for details.

			PRINT VERSION

A print version, published by some well-known publisher as a "backup" to the 
electronic version, is being strongly considered.

Those without convenient access to the World Wide Web might use anonymous
