not straight.

The readers are welcome to look up the papers and compare our "nice"
extension" to Dr. Casey's proof -- or come see our poster at NIPS.
(We actually obtained our result before seeing Dr. Casey's paper, but
that is beside the point.)

This is true, and an unfortunate omission from our part. While we do
discuss Dr. Casey's paper and point out the limitations of the noise
model he considers, I only now realize that we failed to include an
explicit statement to the effect that "Casey proved an analogous
result in his model".

I can assure that this omission was not intentional, but was caused
by our finding out about Dr. Casey's work only after completing the
first version of our paper, and thus adding the technical comparisons
to an already existing text. To us it was so clear _what_ Dr. Casey's
result was that we forgot to mention that explicitly. I suppose this
one sentence would have set the record straight and saved us all from
this discussion.

Well, the "clipped" Gaussian noise is bounded because the state space is.
It is not technically quite clear that large noise levels could not
be used in some devious way in our setting, but this is a minor issue.
Also, if I read Dr. Casey's paper correctly, he assumes that the noise
level is nonzero everywhere within an \epsilon radius of the correct
state, an assumption that we do not need. But these are little
technical points that probably could be changed also in his proof.

This is not quite fair, because in this section we do not _assume_
that the computation can be performed with 100% reliablity, but
_prove_ that it can be, in the case that one only wants to simulate
finite state automata, and the noise is bounded at some sufficiently
low level. (This is actually an embarrassingly simple result, which
we just didn't find in the literature for the basic BSB network
model we consider.) The computational upper bound result, which is
more significant, shows that even if we don't assume 100% reliability,
we still cannot do more than finite automata.

Nonlinear Prediction Systems (NPS) is a small firm based in Portland,
Oregon doing research in forecasting, trading, statistical arbitrage,
and global risk management for the world's major financial markets.
The current research group consists of John Moody, Steve Rehfuss,
and Lizhong Wu.

We are seeking highly talented and well-qualified candidates to
fill Research Scientist and Research Programmer positions.  In both
cases, the work will involve the development and application of
advanced modeling techniques from nonparametric statistics, time
series analysis, neural networks, machine learning, data mining,
genetic algorithms, and econometrics to challenging problems in
financial market modeling.

Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:

* Research Scientist (or Senior Research Scientist):  Ph.D. in
mathematics, physics, statistics, econometrics, electrical engineering,
computer science, or related field, a strong research track record,
and excellent data analysis and computing skills.  The level of
appointment and compensation will depend on experience.

* Research Programmer:  M.S. in one of the above mentioned fields
(or equivalent experience), strong quantitative skills, plus
exceptional programming or software engineering skills.  Experience
with databases, Unix systems programming and management, or Windows
NT programming are desirable.

For either position, preference will be given to candidates who
have experience in modeling noisy, real-world data using state-of-the-art
nonparametric or nonlinear techniques.  Knowledge of statistics or
numerical analysis and experience with C++, S-PLUS, or MATLAB is
highly desirable.  Of particular interest are candidates who have
training in finance or experience in trading or modeling the
financial markets.  Applicants must be willing to work in close
collaboration with other research group members, and must be eager
to tackle extremely challenging and potentially rewarding data
analysis problems in finance.

NPS is located near downtown Portland with views of the city and
mountains.  The work atmosphere is relaxed and informal.  Portland

The annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society brings together
researchers from many fields -- including artificial intelligence, 
education, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology -- who hold a 
common goal: understanding the nature of the mind. 

The Society's Nineteenth Annual Conference will take place at Stanford
University from August 7 to 10, 1997. The meeting will incorporate two 
features designed to attract participants from a broader range of fields 
than in previous years. 

 - The conference will include eight half-day symposia on topics 
   that hold general interest to the cognitive science community
   but that include areas not well represented at the annual meeting. 
   Each symposium will include two survey talks by senior scientists 
   in the area and two invited research talks describing recent advances. 

 - Society members may each submit a single, one-page abstract that is 
   guaranteed to appear in the proceedings. Authors of such abstracts can 
   present posters at the conference, although the program committee may 
   upgrade some to talks. Moreover, the deadline for abstracts will be one 
   month later than that for full papers, and nonmembers may join the 
   Society at the time of submission. 

Another difference is that submissions to the 1997 conference will 
have the same format as published papers. Thus, both full papers and
abstracts should use two-column format with 10 point type, 1 inch
top margin, and 3/4 margins elsewhere. Authors can find templates
that fit these specifications for LaTeX, Framemaker, Word, Word Perfect,

          Rules and Exemplars in Category Learning

Psychological theories of categorization have generally focused on
either rule- or exemplar-based explanations of categorization. We
present two experiments that show evidence of both rule induction and
exemplar encoding, and we present a connectionist model (ATRIUM) that
specifies a mechanism for combining rule- and exemplar-based
representation. In both experiments participants learned to classify
items, most of which followed a simple rule although there were a few,
frequently occurring exceptions. Experiment 1 examined how people
extrapolate beyond the range of trained instances.  Experiment 2
examined the effects of instance frequency on generalization to novel
cases. We found that categorization behavior was well described by the
model, in which exemplar representation is used for both rule and
exception processing. A key element in correctly modeling
categorization in tasks such as these was capturing the interaction
between the rule- and exemplar-based representational structures using
shifts of attention between rules and exemplars.

        Physiological Computation of Binocular Disparity

We previously proposed a physiologically realistic model for
stereo vision based on the quantitative binocular receptive field
profiles mapped by Freeman and coworkers.  Here we present several new
results about the model that shed light on the physiological processes
involved in disparity computation.  First, we show that our model can
be extended to a much more general class of receptive field profiles
than the commonly used Gabor functions.  Second, we demonstrate that
there is, however, an advantage of using the Gabor filters: Similar to
our perception, the stereo algorithm with the Gabor filters has a
small bias towards zero disparity.  Third, we prove that the complex
cells as described by Freeman et al.\ compute disparity by effectively
summing up two related cross products between the band-pass filtered
left and right retinal image patches.  This operation is related to
cross-correlation but it overcomes some major problems with the
standard correlator.  Fourth, we demonstrate that as few as two
complex cells at each spatial location are sufficient for a reasonable
estimation of binocular disparity.  Fifth, we find that our model can
be significantly improved by considering the fact that complex cell
receptive fields are on average larger than those of simple cells.
This fact is incorporated into the model by averaging over {\em
several} quadrature pairs of simple cells with nearby and overlapping
receptive fields to construct a model complex cell.  The disparity
tuning curve of the resulting complex cell is much more reliable than
that constructed from a {\em single} quadrature pair of simple cells
used previously, and the computed disparity maps for random dot
stereograms with the new algorithm are very similar to human
perception, with sharp transitions at disparity boundaries.  Finally,
we show that under most circumstances our algorithm works equally well
with either of the two well-known receptive field models in the
literature.

in-house supercomputer for neural modeling and image analysis, and patient
populations for neuropsychological studies.

The goal of this single-track conference is to investigate and discuss new
approaches and movements in cognitive science in a workshop-like atmosphere.
Among the topics which seem to have emerged in the last years are:
embodiment of knowledge, system theoretic and computational neuroscience
approaches to cognition, dynamics in recurrent neural architectures,
evolutionary and artificial life approaches to cognition, and
(epistemological) implications for perception and representation,
constructivist concepts and the problem of knowledge representation,
autopoiesis, implications for epistemology and philosophy (of science).

  Evidence for a failure of the traditional understanding of neural
representation converges from several fields. Neuroscientific results in the
last decade have shown that single cell representations with hierarchical
processing towards representing units seems not the way the cortex
represents environmental entities. Instead, distributed cell ensemble coding
has become a popular concept for representation, both in computational and
in empirical neuroscience. However, new problems arise from the new
concepts. The problem of binding the distributed parts into a uniform
percept can be "solved" by introducing synchronization of the member
neurons. A deeper (epistemological) problem, however, is created by
recurrent architectures within ensembles generating an internal dynamics in
the network. The cortical response to an environmental stimulus is no longer
dominated by stimulus properties themselves, but to a considerable degree by
the internal state of the network. Thus, a clear and stable reference
between a representational state (e.g. in a neuron, a Hebbian ensemble, an
activation state, etc.) and the environmental state becomes questionable.
Already learned experiences and expectancies might have an impact on the
neural activity which is as strong as the stimulus itself. Since these
internally stored experiences are constantly changing, the notion of (fixed)
representations is challenged. At this point, system theory and
constructivism, both investigating the interaction between environment and
organism at an abstract level, come into the scene and turn out to provide
helpful epistemological concepts. The goal of this conference is to discuss
these phenomena and their implications for the understanding of
representation, semantics, language, cognitive science, and artificial life.

  Contrary to many conferences in this field, the focus is on
interdisciplinary cooperation and on conceptual and epistemological
questions, rather than on technical details. We are trying to achieve this
by giving more room to discussion and interaction between the participants
(e.g., invited comments on papers, distribution of papers to the
participants before the conference, etc.). According to the
interdisciplinary character of cognitive science, we welcome papers/talks
from the fields of artificial life, empirical, cognitive, and computational
neuroscience, philosophy (of science), epistemology, anthropology, computer
science, psychology, and linguistics.

  1. Representation - epistemological concepts and findings from
     (computational) neuroscience, cognitive science (recurrent neural
     architectures, top-down processing, etc.), and philosophy;

     systems;

  3. Modeling language, communication, and semantics as a dynamical,
     evolutionary and/or adaptive process;

  4. Representation and cognition in artificial life;

  5. What is the role of simulation in understanding cognition?

according to their scientific content, originality, quality of presentation,

in Times Roman 10-12pt (or equivalent). Please send 4 copies to the
organizing committee, see address below.

  In a first step we are planning to publish the proceedings as Technical
Report of the Austrian Society for Cognitive Science. In a second step
after rewriting the papers and after a second round of review a major
publisher will be approached to publish the best papers in an edited
volume.

  For the final versions of the accepted papers electronic submissions are
preferred in one of the following formats: Word, FrameMaker, or Ascii.

Vienna, Austria, can be reached internationally by plane or train. The
Vienna Schwechat airport is located about 16 km from the city center. From
the airport, the city air-terminal can be reached by bus (ATS 60.- per

main stations which are located almost in the city center. From the
air-terminal and the railway stations the congress site and hotels can be
reached easily by underground (U-Bahn), tramway, or bus. A detailed

  In May the climate is mild in Vienna. It is the time when spring is at its
climax and everything is blooming. The weather is warm with occasional

NSF has just announced a new initiative in Learning and Intelligent
Systems, with a first-year funding of about $20 million.  The
announcement is up on the web site:

The scope of this initiative is not 100% clear from the outside, but
the core will involve support of collaborations across major
disciplines (e.g. biology, engineering, computer science, psychology,
education), hopefully to develop a more unified understanding of
learning mechanisms/models/designs/issues applicable to both natural
and artificial systems. Neural network models are mentioned, along
with several other paradigms, as a tool for understanding and
implementing learning in a more unified way across disciplines.

Technology development and education will also be a major part of
this. The relative emphasis between basic science and software
development is still not entirely clear, but both will clearly have a
major role. It is clear, however, that there is White House interest.

NSF has just announced a new initiative in Learning and Intelligent
Systems, with a first-year funding of about $20 million.  The
announcement is up on the web site:

The scope of this initiative is not 100% clear from the outside, but
the core will involve support of collaborations across major
disciplines (e.g. biology, engineering, computer science, psychology,
education), hopefully to develop a more unified understanding of
learning mechanisms/models/designs/issues applicable to both natural
and artificial systems. Neural network models are mentioned, along
with several other paradigms, as a tool for understanding and
implementing learning in a more unified way across disciplines.

Technology development and education will also be a major part of
this. The relative emphasis between basic science and software
development is still not entirely clear, but both will clearly have a
major role. It is clear, however, that there is White House interest.

The IJCAI-97 Program Committee invites submissions of technical papers
for IJCAI-97, which is to be held in Nagoya, Japan, August 23-29,
1997.  Submissions are invited on substantial, original, and
previously unpublished research on all aspects of AI.

\paragraph*{Timetable} Authors must first submit their paper's title
page (preferably electronically, as described below) to arrive by
January 21, 1997.  They must then submit six complete printed copies
of their paper to arrive by January 23, 1997.  {\em Submissions
received after that date will be returned unopened.}  Authors should
note that mail can sometimes be considerably delayed, especially
during the winter in North America, and should take this into account
when timing their submissions.  Notification of receipt will be mailed
to the first author (or designated author) soon after receipt.
Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers will be
mailed to the first author (or designated author) by March 28, 1997.
Camera-ready copy of accepted papers must be received by the publisher
in the USA by April 28, 1997.  Note that at least one author of each
accepted paper is required to attend the conference to present the
work.

\paragraph*{Electronic Title Page}
Because of the huge number of submissions anticipated and the tight
schedule we have to assign reviewers, we require that authors who
desire to submit a full paper declare their intention by submitting a
title page by January 21, 1997. The strongly preferred method is by
using a World-Wide-Web (WWW) browser such as Netscape to connect to:

Artificial Intelligence, whose address is at the end of this Call.  This
title page must arrive by January 21, 1997, and should have the

\paragraph*{Policy on Multiple Submissions}

IJCAI will not accept any paper which, at the time of submission,
is under review for, or has already been published or accepted for
publication in a journal or another conference.  Authors are also
expected not to submit their papers elsewhere during IJCAI's review
period.  These restrictions apply only to journals and conferences,
not to workshops and similar specialized presentations with a limited
audience.


\paragraph*{Paper Format}

All six copies of a submitted paper must be clearly legible.  Letter
quality print is required.  Normally, dot-matrix printout will be
unacceptable unless truly of letter quality.  Exceptions will be made

widely available.  We cannot accept email or FAX submissions of
full papers.  Submissions must be printed on 8 1/2 x 11 inch or A4
paper.

\paragraph*{Title Page}

Each copy of the paper must have a title page, separate from the body of the
paper, including the title of the paper, the names and addresses of all
authors, a short abstract of less than 200 words, a list of content areas
(see above), tracking number from electronic submission of title
page (if any, see above),  and acknowledgements (if any).  In addition, it
must contain the following declaration:

\paragraph*{Paper Body}
The paper body begins on the second page, and should be formatted
identically with the format for camera-ready copy of accepted papers
(except for the omission of names and affiliations).

Submissions must not exceed 6 pages in camera-ready format.  {\em
Overlength papers will be returned without review.}  Each accepted
paper will be allowed 6 pages in the proceedings; up to 2 additional
pages may be purchased at a price of \$250 per page.

Authors from countries in which access to word-processing systems is
limited may submit unformatted papers.  The body of these submissions
must be at most 6200 words, including footnotes, figure captions,
tables, appendices, and bibliography.  Each half-page of figures
will be counted as 500 words.  Papers longer than 6200 words
will be returned without review.  Authors submitting unformatted
papers must include a word count on the first page of their paper
body.

In order to make blind reviewing possible, authors should {\em omit
their names and affiliations} from the paper body.  In place of their
names and affiliations, they should provide the list of content areas
and their paper's tracking number.  (Authors without access to Web
browsers, who therfore did not submit electronic abstracts, may omit
the tracking number.)  Also, while the references should include all
published literature relevant to the paper, including previous works
of the authors, it should not include unpublished works. When
referring to one's own work, use the third person, rather than the
first person. For example, say ``Previously, Pollack [7] has shown
that...", rather than ``In our previous work [7] we have shown
that...." Try to avoid including any information in the body of the
paper or references that would identify the authors or their
institutions.  Such information can be added to the final camera-ready
version for publication.


\paragraph*{Review Process}

Papers will be subject to blind peer review:  reviewers will not be aware
of the identities of the authors.  Selection criteria include accuracy and
originality of ideas, clarity and significance of results and the quality of
the presentation.  The decision of the Program Committee, taking into
consideration the individual reviews, will be final and
cannot be appealed.  Papers selected will be scheduled for presentation and
will be printed in the proceedings.  Authors of accepted papers, or their
representatives, are expected to present their papers at the conference.

IJCAI-97 is introducing a new mechanism for individuals and groups to
issue detailed technical challenges to the AI community.  We are
soliciting papers that issue specific and highly focused technical
challenges relating to artificial intelligence.  We refer to such
papers as <strong>challenges</strong>.  Accepted challenge papers will
be published in the IJCAI proceedings much like traditional technical
papers.  Unlike traditional technical papers, however, a challenge is
expected to instigate a narrowly focused program of research
culminating in papers submitted to the following IJCAI that address
the technical challenge and summarize progress.  Detailed information

As a medium, videotapes are better suited than written papers to {\em
illuminate} the efficacy of AI research, especially in the emerging
and exciting areas of AI in Education, Art, Music, Entertainment,
Hypermedia, 3-D Animation, Artificial Life, Network-Based tools like
Mosaic, etc.

If a picture is worth thousand words, then a (3-D) movie will
certainly enhance the illustration of behaviors of these systems that
are based on AI principles, methods, and tools.

Recognizing this potential of video presentations to demonstrate and
augment AI research results, a Video Track has been designated since
IJCAI-89 to be an integral part of the Technical Programs of IJCAI
Conferences.

The Video Track is designed to demonstrate the current levels of
usefulness of AI tools, techniques, and methods for a variety of
practical and theoretical problems arising in industrial, commercial,
government, space, and educational areas.

You are invited and strongly encouraged to submit to this video track
and take advantage of the following opportunities and benefits that
we intend to provide as a forum to showcase your best AI research results.

Authors are invited to submit THREE (3) copies of a videotape
of 15 minutes maximum
duration, accompanied by a submission letter that includes:
\begin{itemize}
\item Title
\item Full names, postal addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of all
authors
\item Subject matter area (e.g. knowledge acquisition, learning, vision,....)
\item Tape format: indicate either NTSC-VHS(preferred) or PAL-VHS
\item Duration of tape in minutes
\item THREE (3) copies of an abstract of one to two pages in length,
containing the title of the video, and full names and addresses of the
authors
\item Author's permission to copy tape for review purposes.
\end{itemize}
All tapes, along with their abstracts, must be received by the
Videotape Track 
Chair no later than
{\bf January 6, 1997}.
Submissions
received after that date will be returned unopened. Authors should
note that ordinary mail can sometimes be considerably delayed and
should take this into account when timing their submissions.

\item Notification of receipt will be mailed to the first or
designated author soon after receipt.
\item All inquiries regarding
lost submissions must be made by {\bf February 10, 1997}.
\item Tapes cannot
be returned; authors should retain extra copies for making revisions.
\item Notification of acceptance or rejection will be mailed on or
before {\bf March 10, 1997} to the first or designated author.
\item Authors will also have the
opportunity to submit a revised version of their videotape
about one month following notification of acceptance.
\item The final version of videotapes must not be more than fifteen (15) minutes
duration, must be in NTSC-VHS format (U.S. Standard only) and must be
submitted directly to the Video Track Chair.
\item Accepted tapes will be sent directly from the
Video Track Chair to the conference publisher.

{\large {\bf Review Criteria}}\\

Each tape will be rigorously reviewed by experts in the
subject matter areas of the tape and only the best tapes will be
selected for presentation at the conference.
The following general criteria will guide the selection:
\begin{itemize}
\item Significance and originality of system functionality presented;
\item The need for and the contribution of the AI component of the system;
\item Clarity of presentation of system's goals, methods, and results;
\item Quality of Presentation (including audio, video, and pace).
\item Level of interest to the conference audience;
\end{itemize}
Preference will be given to systems that
show a high level of maturity. Tapes that are deemed to be
advertising commercial products, propaganda, purely
expository materials, merely taped lectures, or material not
of scientific or technical value will be rejected.\\
\\
{\large {\bf Publication}}\\

Abstracts of accepted videos will be allotted a maximum of two
pages each in the
conference proceedings. The style of these two-page papers should be
the same as the full length papers in the Proceedings, with an initial
abstract of approximately 50 words.

The final version of the video's abstract, edited in the format specified
in the acceptance letter, must be received by the publishers in the USA
by {\bf April 28th, 1997}.
Authors  will be required to transfer copyright of their abstract (but
not the video) to IJCAI Inc.

In addition, a 30-minute presentation slot will be
made available as part of one of the video sessions. To ensure a consistent
format to the sessions and an opportunity for questions, authors should keep
as close as possible to the following format for their presentations:

\item 10-13 minutes (average) video showing
\item 7-10 minutes technical details
\item 2 minutes conclusions
