As was pointed out, it was one of NTR's first Krishna roles, but in general, we can also note how the credits, sound, and picture seem quite dated. In contrast, if we take any of G's movies from the 1970's, we can see how the pictures evolved greatly. Taking say, Lava Kusa for example. It is also interesting to note that in the song Vathapi Ganapathim G's voice is crystal clear, youthful, and quite striking. That may even be why the song is idolized as being one of his best works. I wonder if people would have the same opinion if he sang it in say, 1973 or even 1974. To: ghantasa@cs.wisc.edu Friends! I started wondering about this svarabrahma, Sri KV Mahadevan, who literally gives life to every song that came (comes) his way. Who is this musical genius? Where was he from? Does he know Telugu well enough to set tunes to songs? Does he understand the context? It is clear that he, gets the BAva of the songs and sets more than suitable tunes. I don't know if any one is parallel to him. As KV Mahadevan stands upright, Ghantasala matched his talents with his voice and singing. If I am not wrong, mUgamanasulu is a historical landmark in Telugu Film Music. Look at the tunes of the songs like InATi IbamdhamEnATidO, muddabamti poovulO, pADutA tIyagA callagA etc.. No doubt G put real life into those songs but KVM was responsible for those tunes. How did these two geniuses (G and KVM) come up with that memorable package? It was real but on the other side equally a mystery. Could some one write about their relationship? KVM was the AsthAna Music Director for Jagapati Arts Pictures. adRshTavamtulu is a movie that most of us remember for its songs. One such is muddamTE cEdA - G and Suseela sang this (if I am not wrong). What a tune! The choice of instrumental music in KVM's direction is extrordinary. The instrumental music adds a lot to G's singing alongwith the tune, lyrics, and bhAva. Above all timing (how much instrumental music should be embedded) is very important. KVM knew his art! G reflected KVM's musical genius in his singing. Bharya Biddalu is another example. Akulu pOkulu is a splendi song. G sang this song. KVM set an excellent and unforgettable tune to this song. Another one is bratuku poola bATa kAdu - the tune and G's voic really emphasize the illusion of our lives. No one can do that! As long as we listen to G's songs made under the auspecious of KVM's musical direction, we can not equally forget this Svarabrahma! --pAlana From nparinand@cas.org Tue Apr 30 09:45:13 1996 Received: from lucy.cs.wisc.edu (lucy.cs.wisc.edu [128.105.2.11]) by sea.cs.wisc.edu (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id JAA00738 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 1996 09:44:56 -0500 Received: from srv01s4.cas.org (srv01s4.cas.org [134.243.50.9]) by lucy.cs.wisc.edu (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id IAA14291 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 1996 08:42:10 -0500 Date: Tue, 30 Apr 1996 09:42:06 -0400 From: nparinand@cas.org (PALANA (pAranandi lakshmI narasimham)) Message-Id: <9604300942.AA8270@cas.org> Subject: Telugu Bhagavadgita - Barata Yuddham - Ghantasala To: ghantasa@cs.wisc.edu Friends: namastE! Some time ago Gunnu recorded the soundtrack of kRshNAvatAram from the video. The recording came out excellent. I was listening to it yesterday and noted some neat features of the film. 1) Ghantasala sang the Telugu Bhagavadgita Padyalu. They were superb. Does anyone know who wrote those? (Balamurali sang some in Karna. They were also in Telugu.) (What about Krushna's Kurukshetram?) Any way, I am interested in G's Telugu Bhagavadgita e.g. as in kRshNAvatAram. 2) Immediately after the Bhagavadgita rendition, G sang the Bharata Yuddham scene. That runs for about 15-20 minutes. Man O Man! This is legendary! No parallel to this. One does not have to sea the yuddham or read or see a movie. Just listen to G's song fro kRshNAvatAram. Wonderful! I don't know if there is a record of this. Could someone tell who wrote this also. 3) BTW, who is the moozikku DivirEkshanI for this kRshNAvatAram? It is true that KVM and G brought some unforgettable all time melodies, to the telugu music lovers(of course, there were works produced in Tamil, by these two people). I heard once that KVM never used to give out the tune directly. He would rather whisper it to his assistant PuhalEndi and the tune would be rendered out throughhim. I would appreciate if someone in the group has anything to say on this. KVM has a style of his own that one can identify with the beat itself. The drums and Tabla play a vital role in his music. He has rendered gems not only during the G-era but also until late. Unfortunately, we do not get to hear many of his works, these days. Nevertheless, though a few, even the latest ones can be said to be 'AaNimutyaalu'. KVM and AatrEya together gave the ultimate combination of all, that were tuned by KVM. All the scores that pAlanagAru has mentioned viz., the ones from moogamanasulu, prEm nagar etc. were a combination of KVM and AatrEya. The writerbasically being a 'manasu kavi', explains the situation that pAlana gAru has raised. The music of KVM sounds as though the composer tunes it according to its BAva and mood. Thinking about the combination of KVM and AatrEya, I remember an anecdote told by my "guruvugaaru". AatrEya always likes to write the song first and then KVM used to tune the song. One fine day for an ANR's film (I forgot the film) AatrEya wrote the following pallavi: tata! veedukolu! goodbye! inka selavu... I am there will be nobody who did not listen to this song but for a second or two just pretend you did not hear this song and try to make a tune for it. KVM himself took one month to create a tune for it. Such a great musician is KVM and such a great writer is AatrEya; and just imagine the great soul which gave the ultimate voice to the song! That is what I remember from reading it somewhere at least. Another memorable Ghantasala moment, or moments is when both Duryodhana and Arjuna come to meet Krishna and then we hear the "bava yapudu vuchiti neeve" padyams. Furthermore, some of my absolute favorite padyams come from the rayabara scene when Krishna travels to mediate with the Kauravas. Also we have the Jayahe krishnavathara song in which in 5 or 10 minutes the entire childhood pastimes of krishna are sung. Undoubtedly, this movie does have one of the best soundtracks of any religious movie. I think close seconds are Narthansla, pandava vanavasam and veerabhimanyu and maybe maya bazaar. Surprising enough that all three are based on the pandava story perhaps demonstrating some very high level skill and knowledge by the writers, music directors, etc, in that particular story line. Amongst the many padyamulu that G song, none better than the rayabaramu ones in this movie. The other short verses that catch anyone's attention are; at the beginning of the movie (cannot remember), followed by Sringara rasa sarvasvam.. and finally Parithranaya sadhunam... G sang the last one in other movies and Bhagavadgita, but the one in this movie is my all time favourite. It is so fitting for the movie, because it is played at the end of the movie when the physical curtain is being drawn as well as curtain was being drawn on dwapara yuga, death of Sri Krishna and the beginning of Kali yuga. As for other songs, there are: jaya he krishna..' jagamunele, nee charana kamalala, all of these are extremely good. The two that are outstanding and indeed all time greats are: Thanuvutho kalugu bandavumulella, and the final song, adigo alladigo kurukhethramuna..Thanuvutho.. was rendered in an unusual, but in most fitting style for the scene. The other song, adigo alladigo kurukhethramuna -this is one of the three most ferocious songs of G, the other two are unnava asalunnava from thukaram and manikya veena muphalalanthi (kaalidasa). Pendyala who is the music director for kaalidasa once remarked in his tribute to G that during the practicing sessions, G was singing so ferociously that he was frightened to interrupt him. All in all Krishnavataram is a musical extravaganza as is Lava Kusha representing Ramayanam, and needless to extol the contribution of G to these two fims. Best wishes M Chandrashekar
