It's not, as one may expect from a sane world, calls to legistlate guns, calls for parents to examine their parenting style, or any of the other possbile root causes of the problems those kids had... The fallout from the shootings has been a wave of "Geek Profiling", where high schools and middle schools are singling out the oddballs even more than usual. While I don't certainly condone the actions of the shooters, I understand them. High school is hard if you don't fit in, if you're not one of the sheep that infests a typical high school. I'm *not* saying that these kids weren't sick, I'm just saying that I understand, to some extent, their sickness. Comments, anyone? For the record, I'm a gamer, I play Quake, I watch movies in which things blow up and people die, I wear a black trenchcoat, and there was a time in high school where I wore black on a regular basis. I haven't ever taken a gun and shot up most of my class. Just wanted to be clear on that point. -- Mike Bloy "Roll the dice. I don't understand them. There is nothing to understand or sympathize with. The guys were just sick in the head. NO ONE in that school is guilty of pushing them to the edge. People get picked on and laughed at. That is life you deal with it. >High school is hard if you don't fit in, if you're > not one of the sheep that infests a typical high school. High school is only hard if YOU make it hard on yourself. Everyone I know who didn't fit in at there highschool did it on purpose. You really have to strive to not have any friends. I mean the 2 shooters had a whole group of friends. But that wasn't enough for them. And you know what I bet those members of the trench coat Mafia, made fun of people just as much as the jocks made fun of them. In highschool it goes both ways. I take offense to the comment of being sheep, I didn't have a horrible experience in highschool. I had lots of friends my 10th -12th grades years when I was at lakeside. My short lived frosh year at Belleville, was not fun. But then I think I didn't help the situation. And you know what, I had friends my Frosh year in Belleville. They just weren't the friends I thought I should have status wise so I didn't let myself enjoy it I brought my misery on myself. At lakeside I never followed the same beat as everyone else I was my own person. I did what I wanted. And you know what, I had a lot of friends for it in everygroup. I wasn't a sheep and I made it through fine. And you know what I admit I wasn't nice to the people I didn't like, I made fun and picked on them. One person in particular I remember was this girl named Jackie. She new we didn't like her. We tried to be nice, but we couldn't stand her and didn't want her to be around. Finally we gave up being nice. Then we would just scatter if she came near. She finally got the hint. She tried to hard to make people like her. And it backfired into her becoming a superannoying person. But you know what she also still had her own group of friends. Now i know some of you are thinking that i don't have much to say because I went to a private highschool and that was somehow differnt and nice. Trust me people, the only differnce was that my school didn't have all those AP courses. Clicks are in all hischools. In work groups, in college, in life. You can't be friends with everyone. And you know what You still make fun of people to this day. 14 N. Wickham Ct. There is nothing to understand or sympathize with. The guys were > just sick in the head. NO ONE in that school is guilty of pushing them to the edge. People > get picked on and laughed at. That is life you deal with it. I don't understand the shooters, nor do I sympathize. I do understand the general situation. I was different in elementary and middle school (I was part of the gang in high school, but this was because I made a conscious decision to change, I will explain later). I was picked on because I didn't play sports at recess and because I was smarter than many other people. I dealt with it. I was violent. I was teased so much in elementary school because I was different that I acted out. I drew attention to myself and to the situation. Unfortunately this did not help. When I was beaten with a plastic baseball bat by another student I took the bat from him and hit him back. Guess who was suspended. Guess who had the verbal warning and nothing else. >> High school is hard if you don't fit in, if you're >> not one of the sheep that infests a typical high school. > High school is only hard if YOU make it hard on yourself. Everyone I know who didn't fit in I agree and disagree with this. Yes, you can make high school easier on yourself. You join the popular crowd. You sublimate what you truly feel, what you truly think into a dislike for those who don't fit in. You disregard your enjoyment for books, for being alone, and you follow the crowd. That's what I did. I had to, otherwise the ridicule and the hate got to me so badly that I became violent. I have to say this to put it in perspective. Some on this list know what happened, some don't. When I was in eighth grade I was mercilessly teased. I was teased by everyone, including my friends. I looked for people at my middle school to join up with. But was accepted by only a few. I was the one that these people picked on. One day I was playing tennis (I belonged to a tennis team) and one person who particularly got to me was, as usual, teasing me. I got so angry that I turned around and hit him with my tennis racket. Fortunately it didn't hurt him. Unfortunately it turned off his head and hit someone else in the temple. It nearly killed him. He fell into a coma for about six months and almost died. Fortunately he woke up and is alive, unfortunately he is severely mentally handicapped. At that point I decided that I could no longer listen to the teasing and react with violence. I transferred schools and changed my personality. I acted differently from the way I truly felt. I disregarded what I thought was right so that I could fit in, so that I wouldn't react. > there highschool did it on purpose. You really have to strive to not have any friends. I > mean the 2 shooters had a whole group of friends. But that wasn't enough for them. And you > know what I bet those members of the trench coat Mafia, made fun of people just as much as > the jocks made fun of them. In highschool it goes both ways. One thing that I always did in high school was that I was always careful to respect others. I worked hard not to tease people, except in a jovial way. I developed a group of friends in my new school and in high school. But they probably weren't all the people that I would have hung out with had I not put aside who I was and attempted to be someone who was accepted. To be honest, had the earlier mentioned incident never happened I probably would have chosen to keep to myself. I don't mean to give the impression that my high school years were terrible and that I didn't really like the friends I had. I genuinely became the person that I tried to become. I became someone who was nice to everyone, who participated in sports and enjoyed it, who hung out with part of the popular crowd. My high school was probably different from most people's on this list. There were two popular crowds, the popular Mexicans and the preppies. I was a preppy. There were people in my high school that were like what I would have been like had I not changed. I cannot say that I changed my whole personality, I just changed aspects of it. But it effected me deeply. You may hear what I have said and think that it was good for me to change, but I am very sad that I did. I am sad that the situation ever came up that made me determined to change. I was smarter, more creative, and a much better person (other than violent outbursts) than I am today. I am still recovering from the change. Just now, in the past year, have I began to be more like the person I was. I am maturing, as I worked to be less mature in the eighth grade. I don't know what else to say. I have bared my soul to you, some who I little know. Hopefully it will give you insight into myself and to those who are like me. If you have any questions for me please ask, either in person or in email. I have no problem with people responding to this in any way they like, in fact, I would like people to respond. Anyway, I tend to babble so I will end here. Are we arguing that high school (or life in general for that matter) is not hard and full of cliques? I didn't think that was the point. Wherever you go there will be cliques and people who want you to fit in or be like them, or else want you to leave. And I don't doubt in the least that that hurts a great deal, but a lot of that is the expectations we bring upon ourselves about what we want ourselves to be. Once we are comfortable with where we stand with ourselves, it doesn't hurt so deeply (though it still does hurt. We all want to be what everyone wants us to be inately). Whether or not it hurts is not the point either. The point is does someone have the right to kill 15 other people because it did? My answer to that would be absolutely not.
