The Internet has over 350 million pages of data and is expected to reach over one billion pages by the year 2000. Buried on the Internet are both valuable nuggets for answering questions as well as large quantities of information the average person does not care about. The Digital Library effort is also progressing, with the goal of migrating from the traditional book environment to a digital library environment. Information Retrieval Systems: Theory and Implementation provides a theoretical and practical explanation of the latest advancements in information retrieval and their application to existing systems. It takes a system approach, discussing all aspects of an Information Retrieval System. The importance of the Internet and its associated hypertext-linked structure is put into perspective as a new type of information retrieval data structure. The total system approach also includes discussion of the human interface and the importance of information visualization for identification of relevant information. The theoretical metrics used to describe information systems are expanded to discuss their practical application in the uncontrolled environment of real world systems. The Basque country is essentially a linguistic and cultural community. It has always meant keeping their eyes open on the world. Basque whalers and sailors have a long tradition of trading and interchange with the Greeks, the Vikings, and the great Muslim sea trading nations. Christoper Columbas' map-maker was a Basque, as was the first navigator to sail round the world, Juan Sebastian El Cano - the only captain to return from the Magellan expedition." ADMINISTRATIVE AND GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION Situated on either side of the Pyrenees mountains (the 'backbone' of the Basque country) and bordering the Atlantic ocean, the official Basque name for the country is Euskal Herria. Administratively today, it is divided between France (three provinces of Baxe-Nafarra, Lapurdi and Xiberoa, 3000 sq. kms, 250,000 inhabitants which form the Northen part) and Spain (four provinces of Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzko= a and Nafarroa, 18000 sq. kms, and a population of 2,500,000 inhabitants, which form the Southern part). GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES More than half of the Basque country is formed by mountains of between 400 and 2500 metres high, in a relatively anarchic layout. Throughout the country there are both many forests and rich pasturelands, freshwater springs, sharp rising peaks dominating long winding valleys, and massive cliffs plunging down into the ocean. Equally there are gentle and more accessible slopes ideal for good farmland. The Pyrenean peaks axis slanting through the Basque country divides it into two main zones ; one, the Atlantic side, has a mild ocean climate and green landscape; the other, the meridional side, is predominantly influenced by the Mediterranean climate and colour. THE NORTHEN BASQUE COUNTRY The Northern Basque country covers all the areas north of the river Bidassoa. Here the more modern coastal zone is in sharp contrast with the old farming traditions of the hinterland. It was Napolean III who, at the end of the last century, began to make it a holiday seaside resort. The main economic activity of the Northern Basque country is centred in and around Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz (known as the BAB). It is predominantly a services sector, with a relatively fast-growing industrial sector as well. It is worth noting that the nucleus of international firms well-established here (in the fields of aeronautics, smelting, electronics and telecommunications) has caused a development spin-off of smaller and medium-sized firms in highly specialised areas. The BAB also has the advantage of being situated in a truly Euro-region, with a population of nearly 5 million multi-lingual inhabitants radiating over 200 kms on either side. It is an access to one of the most powerful an= d wealthy parts of the Iberian peninsula and an obligatory transit zone for all movement of people and goods from Northern to Southern Europe. CONFERENCE LOCATION : BIARRITZ Biarritz, where the conference is located, was dedicated to whaling and fishery activities until the end of the 18th century. Then, fishery econom= y went down and the city orientated towards health activities becoming a health resort. The golden Belle Epoque of princes, princesses, statesmen and intellectuals begun when Wellington's English officers shew to their compatriots the beauties of the city. But Biarritz really came into fashion when Napoleon III and his court choose it as his holidays seaside resort. Now, Biarritz is mainly dedicated to tourism. The visitor has a variety of attractions to choose from, depending on the season. There are the many fine sandy beaches where you can see local and international surfers ride the rollers sweeping in from the Atlantic. There is the magnificent forest of Chiberta behind the dunes, with a wonderful golf course laid out among the pine trees. At any time of the year you can enjoy a good game of golf or try your chance at the gaming tables of the Casino. There are leisure centres of all kinds, for sport or fitness and relaxation which complement all the various cultural activities going on throughout the year. The availability of multimedia documents has given a new twist to information retrieval research, unfortunately setting even farther in the future the time in which generalized, completely automatic indexing methods will be available that allow the answering of content-based queries. If a system really capable of fully automatic recognition of "Authoritative sources on the social impact of nuclear waste disposal" seem currently out of reach, even more so for needs of "piano sonatas in styles influenced by art nouveau", "cubist paintings representing violins" or "scenes on sieges from war movies". While in a few decades these information needs might be satisfied by fully automatic systems, for today and tomorrow we will have to make do with systems relying on a mixture of automatic, semi-automatic and manual indexing methods, as it is only through manual intervention that it is possible to inform a retrieval system of the ins and outs of a document. In this respect, an important contribution to multimedia information seeking may come from the conceptual modelling and knowledge representation communities, as these have been developing formal and semi-formal languages and methodologies for the representation of information and for the conceptualization of an application domain. It is expected that, in the mid to long term, successful information seeking systems will have to be based on the close interplay of manually (or semi-automatically) created representations of document content based on conceptual modelling technology, and the automatically created representations of document form of the information retrieval tradition. The workshop may prove instrumental in fostering the cross-fertilization between the more content-minded conceptual modelling community and the more form-minded information retrieval community. TOPICS The workshop will be centred around all aspects of the application of conceptual modelling and knowledge representation methodologies and techniques to information filtering, gathering and retrieval. Founded by Peter the Great, this city was international in spirit from the very beginning and is very different from other Russian cities. Saint-Petersburg is a very beautiful city. It is a city of numerous sights: magnificent architectural ensembles, granite embankments, large squares, broad symmetrical avenues. Monuments, museums, exhibition halls, parks and gardens. Many outstanding architects took part in the designing and construction of the city. The oldest and the most striking building are the Peter and Paul fortress and the Admiralty. One of the most beautiful places is the Palace Square with the remarkable world's tallest monolith the Alexander column. The first thing you should visit in Saint-Petersburg is the Hermitage - the world famous museum. The city is exceptionally rich in monuments, the best being the monument to the founder of the city, Peter I on the Neva embankment which is called "The Bronze Horseman". You can have a look at the suburbs. It will take you an hour to reach Peterhof, the residence of Russian tsars. The history of Peterhof goes back to the early XVIII century when it was built as a monument to the victories by Russia to find an outlet to the Baltic. All the ornamentation of the ensembles is permeated with the idea of glorifying the country's naval power. It was executed by the most prominent architects, sculptors and fountain builders. Not far from Saint-Petersburg is situated another town - Tsarskoye selo where you can visit the Great Catherine's Palace built by Rastrelli. This town is also famous by its park which is very beautiful in autumn. The best season to visit St.-Petersburg is June. In September the weather is not stable, the temperatures may vary in a wide range of 5-20 C (40-70 F). Rains are very probable. You can obtain more detailed information about St.-Petersburg here. The conference venue is the main building of University of St.-Petersburg. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed by Domenico Trezzini, Italian architect invited by Peter the Great, in the beginning of 18-th century. One of the primary uses of such representations is to verify analysts' understanding of users' knowledge of an application domain before proceeding with database design and implementation. Much of the research in conceptual modeling deals with developing formalisms (often graphical) to represent knowledge. However, conceptual modeling research has paid surprisingly little attention to developing representation formalisms based on the structure of knowledge. This workshop will focus on using the "science of knowledge", or cognition, to understand existing conceptual modeling techniques, to guide the design of new techniques, and to provide criteria for evaluating techniques and methods. Cognition is the branch of cognitive psychology that seeks to understand thought processes and the structure of knowledge. Such processes and structures, in turn, can inform the conceptual modeling techniques that are used to develop representations. The purpose of the workshop is to advance the state-of-the-art in applying research on human cognition to problems and issues in conceptual modeling. TOPICS The workshop will explore the applicability of a broad range of cognition research to conceptual modeling. Relevant areas of interest include, but are not restricted to: o categorization o abstraction mechanisms o learning o perception and visual attention o reasoning o incorporating cognitive relationships in semantic models o models/constructs to improve user/analyst communication PAPER/POSITION STATEMENT SUBMISSIONS Researchers interested in participating in the workshop may submit either a full paper (maximum 5,000 words) describing completed research, or a 1-3 page position statement describing their interest in the workshop theme. Information technology, and computing in particular, have been designated as core areas of research by the University of South Australia. The School of Computer and Information Science has developed a strong research profile over the past 5 years. In addition, the industrially-relevant teaching programme continues to be enhanced by the addition of new undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in software engineering, the introduction of degrees which combine computing with management and multimedia and developments in distance learning. The Advanced Computing Research Centre, the ACRC, provides a focus for research within the School. The ACRC is structured into four research concentrations: concurrent systems, database systems, intelligent systems, and software engineering. The concurrent systems area is headed by Professor George Milne who is also Director of the ACRC. The Professor appointed to this position will provide research leadership in one of the other research concentrations as well as contribute to the development of teaching programs in the School. Our highest priority is to appoint a Professor with an established research reputation in the area of database systems in its broadest sense. It would be desirable for candidates to have an interest in emerging areas of databases including data mining, multimedia, world wide web and mobile databases. Interests which embrace one or more of our other research concentrations would be seen to be attractive. We also have interest in receiving applications from outstanding candidates with expertise in other areas of computer science, particularly software engineering and the design of large-scale systems. Relevant expertise would include specification languages, design methodologies, validation techniques and systems engineering. We are aiming to develop a strong research presence in this area, building on existing strengths in language theory, concurrency and formal verification, such that we will be in a position to influence the design of the complex, large scale systems of the future.
