DOOD focuses on research in theory and implementation of deductive and object- oriented databases, the integration of object-orientation and of rule-based deduction to provide a single powerful framework for intelligent database systems, and advanced applications of such systems. In addition to presentations and invited talks, DOOD'97 will include a series of high-level tutorials which will be integrated into the technical programme. Tutorials can be on typical DOOD topics or on related subjects that are not (yet) widely recognized in the DOOD community. Ideally, a DOOD tutorial does not primarily give an introduction to a more or less settled (sub-)field but make evident the challenges of recent application and/or research problems the community is faced with. A selection of possible topics is * Autonomous Agents * Constraints and Databases * Data Warehousing / Data Mining / OLAP * Decision Support * Distributed Deductive and/or Object-Oriented Database Systems * Maintenance of Materialized Derived Data * Parallelism and Concurrency in the Context of Deductive and/or Object-Oriented Database Systems * Transaction Models * Workflow Languages All tutorials must be held in English. Tutorials should be planned for a total duration of 2 hours. PROPOSALS Prospective lecturers are invited to submit abstracts describing the intention of the proposed tutorial and including an outline of their lecture and a list of relevant references by June 13, 1997. Submitted proposals should not exceed 3 pages incl. references (11 pt or above) and must be written in English. To speed up the process of reviewing, authors are requested to submit by electronic mail. Conventional paper copies may be sent to the tutorial chair only if an access to the appropriate electronic devices is not available. In any case, submissions should contain full return mail and e-mail addresses (if applicable), phone number and FAX number (if applicable) of the author. Authors submitting by electronic mail will receive an acknowledgement (also by electronic mail) within 2-3 days. It is intended to include abstracts of the accepted tutorials in the conference proceedings which will be published in the Springer LNCS series. Agents are also one of the most important and exciting areas of research and development in computer science today. Agents are currently being applied in domains as diverse as computer games and interactive cinema, information retrieval and filtering, user interface design, and industrial process control. The aim of the Agents '98 conference is to bring together researchers and developers from industry and academia in order to report on the latest scientific and technical advances, discuss and debate the major issues, and showcase the latest systems. Agents '98 will build on the enormous success of the First International Conference on Autonomous Agents (Agents '97), held in Marina del Rey in February 1997, which was attended by some 500 people. The conference welcomes submissions of original, high quality papers and videos with summaries concerning autonomous agents in a variety of embodiments and playing a variety of roles in their environments. The Agents '98 conference, like its predecessor, will focus primarily on systems that have been or are being implemented; theory papers are welcome provided that they clearly relate to such systems, for example by helping us to predict their behaviour, explain, or understand them. The submission of pure theory papers is not encouraged: there are other, more appropriate forums for such work. Papers that address isolated agent capabilities (such as planning or learning) are similarly discouraged. Evaluation of agents or multi-agent systems will be a necessary component of each submission. The conference will include presentations of papers and videos, panel sessions, software and robotic agent demonstrations, and exhibits. More generally, the conference will strive towards an informal atmosphere with plenty of time for presentations, questions, and discussions. Accepted papers will be formally published in a Conference Proceedings. A limited number of student scholarships will be available. The conference will also include tutorials and workshops that will take place May 9, 1998. The Cup is open to all KDDM tool vendors, academics and corporations with significant applications. All products, applications, research prototypes and black-box solutions are welcome. If requested, the anonymity of the participants and their affiliated companies/ institutions will be preserved. Our aim is not to rank the participants but to recognize the most innovative, efficient and methodologically advanced KDDM tools. Attendance at the KDD-97 conference is not required to participate in the CUP. Participants are required to demonstrate the performance of their KDDM tool in one or all of the following areas: 1. Supervised Learning: Classification or Discrimination 2. Unsupervised Learning: Clustering or Segmentation. In the interest of time, the regression or prediction category and other descriptive modeling techniques, such as the association rules, are not included in the competition this year. The registration deadline for the Cup and the release date for the training and validation data set(s) is June 19, 1997. All participants must send back the results along with a scoring code[1] by July 17th, one month prior to the KDD-97 conference. The scoring code will be used by the KDD-CUP-97 committee to independently validate the results. Each participant will receive the committee's evaluation of his/her/ their performance by August 11, 1997. The winners will be determined based on a weighted combination of classification accuracy (or predictive power,) software novelty (or innovation,) efficiency (people and CPU time) and the data mining methodology employed. DOOD'97 workshops are intended to provide opportunities for intensive discussion and exchange of ideas on specific topics relating to DOOD. At DOOD'95 in Singapore, two workshops were successfully organized, Knowledge Integration and Temporal reasoning in DOOD, respectively. The persons intending to organize a workshop at DOOD'97 are invited to submit a workshop proposal. The submission should include - Objectives: a brief description of the workshop, including background and motivation, novelty and significance. - Organization: names and affiliations of at least two organizers (and program committee members if any), with indication of one responsible organizer and his/her email address. - Workshop Plans: tentative schedule, estimation of the number of participants, etc. Proposals must be written in English, not exceed two pages, either in plain ASCII form or in LaTeX form. All proposals should be submitted to the Workshop Chair by EMAIL, no later than JUNE 13, 1997. Submission in a postscript file is also acceptable. Each submitted proposal is reviewed by the Workshop Chair and the Conference Chair, and those well-organized and fit with DOOD will be selected. The decision will be notified by email to the responsible organizer by JUNE 27, 1997.
