Data mining has attracted people from many different fields, including database systems, data warehouses, machine learning, knowledge acquisition, statistics, information retrieval, and data visualization. In June 1996, we organized a SIGMOD workshop on research issues on data mining and knowledge discovery. It was well attended and was widely considered to be successful in creating a forum for database researchers to exchange their research ideas and results in data mining. To continue to provide such a forum, we are organizing the second workshop in cooperation with SIGMOD. FORMAT The workshop will be held one day before the SIGMOD/PODS'97 conference. The plan is to have a full-day workshop, consisting of invited talks, paper presentation/discussion sessions, a system demo session, and a panel discussion session. If there are a good number of submissions and enough interest, we may organize a poster session in parallel with a data mining system demonstration session. In the project, the University of Twente cooperates with the ING-bank, which is a major bank in the Netherlands. Other Dutch Universities work in the same project on related subjects, like e.g. data mining. The subject studied by the University of Twente covers parallelism for typical the banking application, which consists of OLTP and large, statistical decision support queries. The bank wants to run OLTP at a highest possible throughput and concurrently run DSS queries on a transaction consistent version of the database. Currently the bank runs Parallel Oracle on various hardware platforms and the performance is not sufficient. The University of Twente will exploit the experience in parallel database systems obtained from the PRISMA project. In that project, a parallel, relational, main memory DBMS was built and a lot of experience was gained in the area of parallel processing of complex queries. In the IMPACT project, we will try to make the PRISMA experience practical. In the IMPACT project we are looking for a researcher, who could be a PhD-student or a PostDoc. In addition to the traditional panels and paper presentations, the first day of the workshop will be dedicated working group discussions of small groups of participants. A working group will spend the day discussing a specific set of problems identified ahead of time. Demonstrations of systems will be possible and people interested are encouraged to get in touch with the organizers. We call for two types of contributions: proposals for working groups and paper submissions. 1) CALL FOR PROPOSAL OF WORKING GROUPS ************************************** A working group proposal should contain a short description of the problem being addressed by the group. In particular, it should identify the possible accomplishments the group can obtain. The objective should be one that can be reasonably met in a one-day meeting. EXAMPLE WORKING GROUPS ********************** The following are example topics of working groups already proposed: WORKING GROUP "Description Logics and Object-Oriented Databases" The goal of this working group is to study the question of increasing the modeling power of object-oriented schemas by importing techniques of description logics. Traditionally, object-oriented schemas have enforced very considerable restrictions on the structure of the class hierarchy. The main reasons for these restrictions are in order to allow efficient access to objects and to guarantee a unique representation for objects. The working group will try to identify ways in which we can relax some of the restrictions on object-oriented schemas while still keeping in mind the efficiency considerations. This discussion should also shed light on the issue of defining object-oriented views. WORKING GROUP "Description Logics as a modeling tool for applications" This working group will study the effectiveness of description logics in real applications. Of particular interest will be the use of description logics in ontological engineering, an application area which has seen a recent growth in interest and one which seems naturally amenable to description logics. Topics to be considered will include the practical aspects of modeling, such as methodologies, tools and environments, as well as the relevant benefits and restrictions of description logics. The working group will try to identify key application requirements and how they might influence future description logic research. WORKING GROUP "Coordinated effort towards an Open Architecture for KR systems based on DL" Presently, a KR-DL system is a somewhat monolithic object: a part of an existing KR-DL system can not be taken out of the system and used in another system, and adding new modules in a principled way - e.g., enriching some reasoning capabilities - is almost impossible. The group will constructively discuss on a coordinated effort for building "next-generation" modular DL systems. Developers, theoreticians, users, experienced people can discuss how should be the functionalities, the modules, the services that next generation systems should have. The group may then suggest some common architectures and - perhaps - protocols, in the spirit of enriching the KRSS specifications. The effort of developing a good DL system is enormous - and still it does not satisfy many potential users. A goal of this group is to better satisfy the different points of view of the community. A variety of different approaches and formalisms have been developed, some of them admitting and supporting automated reasoning techniques and having strong similarities to those which have evolved in the context of classical logic. Executable fragments of these logics have been proposed in order to provide more appropriate logical techniques for dealing with change in time. Basically, two different approaches to execution of the temporal logic formalism have evolved. The first, which is compatible with the classical logic programming paradigm, is aimed towards a logical basis for temporal databases and knowledge based systems for reasoning about time and, to be more general, a robust basis for the development of advanced AI systems. Its execution is based on deduction in tractable fragments of suitable temporal logics. The second approach is more motivated by a classical computer science problem, namely to define and develop a uniform framework for programming and verification of computer programs, especially those relying on imperative and reactive behavior. Execution within this second approach corresponds to model construction of the formulae in question and is based on the so called imperative future approach. A renewed interest on programming paradigms based on non classical logics has also been stimulated recently by new issues in the context of concurrent constraint logic programming, (temporal) deductive databases, programming of reactive systems, embedded AI systems and multi-agent systems. WORKSHOPS AIMS -------------- The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum both for the exchange of ideas and for the identification of the potential roles and nature of the emerging paradigm of Executable Temporal and Non Classical Logics. Our intention is to bring together researchers in this area, to identify common ground, relevant experiences, applications, open problems and possible future developments. In particular, we wish to encourage cross-fertilization between different approaches and to improve the understanding of (tractable) execution of temporal logics. Special emphasis will be given to the study of computation models in the context of Artificial Intelligence, and to new approaches to programming in the context of programming of reactive and embedded AI systems. The STA fellowships are meant to enable foreign researchers to carry out collaborative projects with counterparts in Japanese government laboratories and public research corporations. =20 NSF hopes to nominate individuals that are established leaders in their respective research fields and that can provide coordination and networking to significantly advance U.S.-Japan collaboration in areas of direct interest to NSF. A typical fellowship recipient would work on a clearly defined research project in conjunction with a host researcher at a Japanese laboratory. NSF nominees will also be expected to visit and interact with other Japanese laboratories in order to identify where the best work is being done in their field in Japan and to establish or strengthen personal contacts that will facilitate future collaborations and exchanges. Note that the STA fellowships are paid for and administered by the Science and Technology Agency of Japan. The NSF Japan and Korea Program receives applications and nominates selected candidates; STA makes the final decision. Applications to NSF will be internally evaluated and nominations will be made on the basis of NSF program priorities. Priority will be given to individuals who have not previously received an STA (or parallel JSPS) Short-Term Fellowship.=20 The target date for applications to NSF is March 15, 1997. Research visits of 1-3 months starting any time between June 1, 1997 and March 31, 1998 can be considered under this cycle. Researchers may also apply for fellowships directly to STA through potential Japanese hosts. The JSPS fellowships are meant to enable foreign researchers to carry out collaborative projects with counterparts in Japanese universities and inter-university research institutes. NSF hopes to nominate individuals that are established leaders in their respective research fields and that can provide coordination and networking to significantly advance U.S.-Japan collaboration in areas of direct interest to NSF. A typical fellowship recipient would work on a clearly defined research project in conjunction with a host researcher at a Japanese university laboratory. NSF nominees will also be expected to visit and interact with other Japanese laboratories in order to identify where the best work is being done in their field in Japan and to establish or strengthen personal contacts that will facilitate future collaborations and exchanges. Note that the JSPS fellowships are paid for and administered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The NSF Japan and Korea Program receives applications and nominates selected candidates; JSPS makes the final decision. Applications to NSF will be internally evaluated and nominations will be made on the basis of NSF program priorities. Priority will be given to individuals who have not previously received a JSPS (or parallel STA) Short-Term Fellowship.=20 The target date for applications to NSF is March 15, 1997. These positions are made available through support from the Louisiana Board of Regents' Joint Faculty Appointments Program (JFAP); the new faculty members will be designated Louisiana Board of Regents' EPSCoR Assistant/Associate Professors. Louisiana's JFAP has received strong support from the National Science Foundation, and has been hailed as having the potential to become a model program for the Nation. The administrative plan ensures that both faculty members will enjoy full association with both partnering institutions. The startup packages will include laboratory equipment, two years' support for summer salaries, research assistants, and travel costs to professional meetings. USL and Southern are linked to each other, as well as to other research universities in the state, by the new Louisiana Audio-Visual Research Network, facilitating distance learning and remote collaboration. USL is the largest campus in the University of Louisiana system, and is a Doctoral-II university. According to the 1995 National Research Council study, CACS ranks seventh in program effectiveness and faculty quality among all Ph.D. granting computer science departments in all Doctoral-II universities. In a report published in the December 1996 issue of the Communications of the ACM, USL is ranked 35th among all Ph.D. granting computer science departments. USL is located in Lafayette, the hub of French Louisiana, which is known for its Cajun culture. Lafayette is located about 52 miles west of Baton Rouge, and about 129 miles west of New Orleans. Southern University is the largest historical black university in Louisiana, and is located in Baton Rouge, the state capital. South Louisiana is renowned for its joie de vivre, which has given it an international reputation. We are recruiting two candidates who have Ph.D. degrees in computer science or in a closely related area by the date of appointment, and who have a demonstrated commitment to research and teaching. The teaching load is one course per semester, plus a continuing research seminar. The new faculty members will primarily be associated with the Media Technology Laboratory at USL and with the Multimedia Laboratory at Southern. General computing facilities at CACS include a network of Sun workstations, with Unix as the primary operating system. Additional facilities are available in the research laboratories in: automated reasoning, computer vision and pattern recognition, intelligent robotic systems, software research, and VLSI sytems. The broad areas of specialization are in multimedia information retrieval, or multimedia signal processing and data communications, or graphics and data visualization. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in some aspects of complex, distributed software systems research and development (such as in object-oriented programming, network protocols, intelligent agents, multimedia indexing, softbot development, networked database interoperability, communication security, or data compression).
