Software engineering has originated a variety of process-centered environments and process modeling languages aimed at describing and supporting the work of software developers. In the context of information system development, a variety of technology and methods have emerged to describe the workflow adopted by an organization to achieve its business goals. Finally, so-called CSCW environments and tools have been developed to support general, unstructured cooperative activities. We have reached a critical stage in the development and deployment of these technologies. 1. Existing systems and techniques have emerged from different research domains, with little (if any) cross-fertilization of ideas and experiences. We lack a common understanding of the similarities and differences among the existing approaches. 2. We are experiencing significant problems in adopting this kind of technology in real industrial and business settings. 3. There are a number of commercial products on the market (notably, workflow management systems), and we need to define criteria to compare and assess them. 4. The development of new telecommunication networks and infrastructure (such as the Web and Intranets) is changing the environment where these technologies are supposed to operate. We contend that a new discipline is emerging, whose goal is to develop technology and method to support human-centered cooperative activities in complex work settings. Though the tag is certainly not completely appropriate, it has been tentatively called process technology or technology for work activity coordination. This workshop has three main objectives: 1. To identify risks and critical issues for the development and exploitation of this technology. 2. To identify, explore and discuss research issues and topics in process technology, with a particular focus on the next two to five years. 3. To bring together researchers from different communities such as software engineering, information systems, workflow, and metamodelling, in order to find synergies and commonalities. The long term goal is to challenge the research community to redefine the research agenda with a view to new needs and requirements, new enabling technology, and the widening range of application domains in which process technology is being exploited. Agents are of interest in many important application areas, ranging from human-computer interaction to industrial process control. The ATAL workshop series aims to bring together researchers interested in the agent-level, micro aspects of agent technology. Specifically, ATAL-97 will address issues such as theories of rational agency, software architectures for intelligent agents, methodologies and programming languages for realising agents, and software tools for applying and evaluating agent systems. Papers that consider macro-level, societal issues of agent-based systems are welcome only if they explicitly relate to the workshop themes. ATAL-97 will be held over the three days immediately preceding the AAAI-97 conference, also being held in Providence. The ATAL-97 proceedings will be formally published as volume four of the Intelligent Agents series from Springer-Verlag. WORKSHOP THEMES As the title suggests, the workshop has three main themes: * Agent theories: What approaches (e.g., game theory, temporal/modal logic) are appropriate for agent theory? How do these approaches relate to one another? * Agent architectures: What architectures are appropriate for autonomous agents? How can such architectures be given a formal semantics? How can different agent architectures be evaluated and compared? What methodologies can be used to build agent-based applications? How close are these methodologies to existing formal specification languages or object-oriented analysis and design methods? * Agent languages: What programming paradigms are most suitable for agents? How do agent-oriented languages differ from object-oriented and logic programming languages? What are efficient implementation mechanisms for these languages? This year there will be a special track on methodologies for agent-based systems. The track will include both full paper presentations and a panel session. Questions of interest include: Are variations on object-oriented techniques appropriate for agent-based systems? Are variations on techniques for real-time and distributed systems appropriate? What will agent-oriented requirements and specification techniques look like? What tools are available for agent-oriented software engineering? Papers that cross theme boundaries are of particular interest. An example would be a paper that demonstrated how a particular agent architecture embodied some theory of agency. SUBMISSION DETAILS Those wishing to participate in the workshop should submit an original research paper of up to 5000 words (approximately 13 pages maximum) to the chair for their region. Electronic submission in PostScript is strongly encouraged, but four single-sided hard copies will also suffice. As the rate of this migration increases, it will become increasingly important to develop and make use of principled techniques for analysing, specifying, designing, and verifying agent-based systems. Without such techniques, agent technology will simply not realise the potential it so clearly has. The aim of the special track on `Methodologies for Agent-Based Systems' at ATAL-97 is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in sharing their experience with such techniques, with the goal of further understanding the issues and problems associated with agent-system deployment. The track will include a special session of papers, and a panel session of invited speakers. ATAL-97 will be held over the three days immediately preceding the AAAI-97 conference, also being held in Providence. The ATAL-97 proceedings, including the methodologies track, will be formally published as volume four of the `Intelligent Agents' series from Springer-Verlag. Paper submissions for the special track will go through the standard ATAL reviewing procedure, and all papers in the special track will subsequently be published in the formal ATAL proceedings. Nevertheless, until recently there+ has been little cross-fertilization between the two areas. Research in KR mostly concentrated on expressive formalism with sophisticated reasoning services, usually under the assumption that the size of the KB is relatively small. In contrast, DB research was concerned with efficiently storing and retrieving large amounts of data, but the languages for describing schema information were rather simple, and reasoning about the schema played only a minor role. In recent years, this distiction between the requirements and problems in KR and DB is vanishing rapidly. On the one hand, a modern KR-system must be able to handle large data sets if it is to be employed in realistic applications. This means that techniques developed in the DB area can and should be employed. On the other hand, the information stored in DBs becomes more complex, and thus requires more intelligent retrieval and reasoning techniques. The series of annual KRDB workshops was started in 1994 with the intention to bring together researchers and developers from different areas of KR and DB where an interaction between the two fields is promising. Unlike its predecessor workshops, which took place in conjunction with AI conferences, KRDB'97 is held in conjunction with the database conference VLDB'97. In 1997, we intend to focus the discussions at KRDB on the problem of how to support access to heterogeneous information sources, with applications like Data Warehousing and Internet Access in mind. The following is an (incomplete) list of topics that are of interest in this context: - What are adequate languages to describe a user's demand for information and the contents of information sources? Can more sophisticated schema languages support this task? - Which kind of reasoning is required to mediate between information demand and information supply? Can reasoning services from KR contribute to a solution? - What background knowledge about an application domain is needed to formulate and interpret queries over a set of heterogeneous information sources? Is there a role for ontologies? - Which is the view that an access tool for a data warehouse should provide to a user? Should the data warehouse appear as a relational database, a set of data cubes, a semantic network, or as a combination of all this? - What are adequate formalisms for representing and querying meta data? - Should contradictions between different information sources be resolved or is it possible to give meaningful answers to queries in the presence of contradictions? - How does incompleteness of information affect system design and query processing ? - What are suitable formalisms to represent data quality like accuracy, timeliness, relevance etc.? KRDB is a forum for exchanging ideas between DB and KR people. Equally important is the KRDB tradition of stimulating the discussion between academic people and practitioners. Thus, we warmly welcome positions papers from both sides. We are sure that the atmosphere in Athens and the conjunction with the VLDB conference will contribute to the success. October 7-10, 1997 Leysin,Switzerland ----------------------------------------------------------------------- At the beginning there were no databases. Information was stored in archives which contained mere data, whose semantic interpretation was left up to the application programs. Then databases were invented to get rid of duplications and inconsistencies. Database design methodologies instructed people that they should first understand the semantics of the data relevant to the applications and then express this semantics into database schemas. The approach has been extremely successful, resulting in myriads of databases being installed in almost every application environment. Unfortunately, many database design processes neglect to properly record the initial specifications, i.e. most of the intended semantics is not available anymore. Today's database designers are committed to the reuse of existing data, for performance and economic reasons. Moreover, they often have to complement enterprise data with data from external sources, where the corresponding semantics is rarely fully available. Accessing data via the Web is just an example of input from external autonomous repositories. Database researchers today are facing the issues involved in the discovery and understanding of the semantics hidden in whatever is available: data sets, data stores formats, database schemas, application programs, documentation, metadata, forms, interviews, etc. This seventh in the series of IFIP 2.6 working conferences devoted to database semantics will focus on these issues. Submissions are solicited regarding theories, principles, models, methods, formalisms, experiences, tools and prototypes for recovering, representing and organizing semantic information on application data from any possible source. This includes in particular the processes listed below. It continues and consolidates the series of ADBIS workshops organized by the Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter and the East-West Database workshops. The new annual Symposium will be hosted by different countries of the Eastern Europe including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Ukraine (this list is open and only indicates an immediate possibility of the countries to host the Symposium). The symposium will consist of regular sessions with technical contributions reviewd and selected by an international program commitee, invited talks by leading experts, tutorials, and special sections like industrial programs and posters on ongoing research projects in Eastern European countries. ACM SIGMOD will actively support the organisation of the Symposia and warrant the high quality of the program. The Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter serves as a focal point of the event. The center is a collaborative effort between the NIH and Johns Hopkins with a long-term goal to identify and characterize the genes responsible for multifaceted or complex diseases. Towards that goal, the major functions of the CIDR will be to conduct high throughput genotypic analysis in collections of patients with these disorders, together with several related research activities including statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, database design and management and, in order to incorporate the latest developments in genotyping, technology assessment and refinement. The Database Manager will implement a relational database on high performance UNIX based servers in a client-server environment. Master's or Ph.D in computer science, with bachelor's degree in biology or a related field, or a Ph.D. in biology with demonstrable experience in software development. At least five years of experience designing and successfully implementing large computerized databases and at least three years experience with UNIX. Although Transaction Processing systems have been with us for over 25 years, we are now living through a period of change and growth fueled by the Internet and continuing amazing advances in the price, performance, availability, functionality, and usability of computer hardware and software. In addition, as personal and shirt pocket computers are increasingly used to originate and participate in transactions, interesting new challenges arise in terms of ubiquity, throughput, and distributed architecture. HPTS '97 will offer a rare opportunity for the participants to consider the past and design the future. The format of the HPTS Workshop is discussion sessions based on position papers and the presentation of a few full papers. The emphasis is upon sharing experience, ideas, and vision. Each participant must submit either a position paper or an abstract of a full paper and may be asked to lead a discussion session. A position paper may be a viewpoint on a controversial topic, a summary of lessons learned, or a description of experience with a large or unusual Transaction Processing System. An abstract of a full paper may be a description of a new mechanism, architecture, product, application, or of work-in-progress. Of special interest to the HPTS community are submissions on Transaction Processing System topics not commonly covered in other technical forums; including workflow, messaging paradigms, object management, and Internet transactions. Attendance is limited to about 60 participants. Participants will be invited based on their submissions. Abstracts and Position Papers should be at most five pages. Submissions must be delivered electronically, in PostScript format or a URL for a HTML document (special dispensations are available on request). The program committee will nominate some of the more interesting accepted papers for inclusion in a special section on HPTS to appear in the SIGMOD Record.
