Information was stored in archives which contained mere data, whose semantic interpretation was left up to the application programs. Then databases were invented to get rid of duplications and inconsistencies. Database design methodologies instructed people that they should first understand the semantics of the data relevant to the applications and then express this semantics into database schemas. The approach has been extremely successful, resulting in myriads of databases being installed in almost every application environment. Unfortunately, many database design processes neglect to properly record the initial specifications, i.e. most of the intended semantics is not available anymore. Today's database designers are committed to the reuse of existing data, for performance and economic reasons. Moreover, they often have to complement enterprise data with data from external sources, where the corresponding semantics is rarely fully available. Accessing data via the Web is just an example of input from external autonomous repositories. Database researchers today are facing the issues involved in the discovery and understanding of the semantics hidden in whatever is available: data sets, data stores formats, database schemas, application programs, documentation, metadata, forms, interviews, etc. This seventh in the series of IFIP 2.6 working conferences devoted to database semantics will focus on these issues. Submissions are solicited regarding theories, principles, models, methods, formalisms, experiences, tools and prototypes for recovering, representing and organizing semantic information on application data from any possible source. Moreover, the internet revolution, has led to an increased demand for personalised software that can be easily constructed from generic packages. The rapid expansion of computer networks has highlighted the need for software solutions for complex systems consisting of diverse elements, where diversity involves both computational models and physical distribution of software components. Logic programming has been proved to be an excellent basis for program composition. Features such as dynamic memory management, secure pointer manipulation, and compilation to architecture-independent code makes LP a strong candidate for the development of networking tools. However, to exploit this potential, many aspects concerning modularity and program composition need further research and development. For example, methods for combining the program composition extension to LP with other proposed extensions need to be studied. In addition, if the integrated paradigms based on LP are to compete successfully, issues such as modularity need to be addressed. Program development tools and optimisation techniques need to be designed for modular programming. New declarative languages are required that provide a semantically-based modular environment with direct support for program composition. The workshop will provide a forum for exploring aspects of modularity and program composition in logic programming and related areas. The intention is to bring together researchers to identify common ground, relevant experiences, interesting applications, open problems and possible future requirements in this area. New approaches (e.g., OO) and new models within an approach (e.g., there are a number of different OO models) are constantly being introduced. Clearly, not all methods are suitable for all situations. A systematic evaluation of modeling methods is needed to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each method and the appropriate contexts and tasks where each is most suitably applied. This understanding and knowledge has important implications to the use of existing methods and the design of new methods. Three categories of formal evaluation techniques can be identified: purely theoretical (e.g., Ontological evaluation), purely empirical (e.g., experimental comparison), and a hybrid of the two (i.e., theoretical approach with empirical evidence). Though the need for such studies is well-recognized, there is a paucity of evaluative research in the literature. Evaluation of modeling methods remains a challenge in information systems engineering. Objective of Workshop: The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in modeling methods in systems analysis and design to meet, present their research and experience, and exchange ideas. Informatics has become an indispensable part of today's planning schemes and practice offering the opportunity to materialise the notion of interdiscipline and comprehensives but at the same time giving rise to the matter of controlling personal and collective life. It is obvious that the transitory era where we plan and we live in, imposes challenges and constraints to planning. Conse- quently, the main subject of the conference, is to delve and search for the underlying forces which shape the transitory era and also the role of planning in a society where its basic institutions and struc- tures deny collective action, despite the fact that it cannot exist without them. THE STRUCTURE OF THE CONFERENCE The conference will run in three major tracks: (a) URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING, (b) ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING and (c) INFORMATICS IN PLANNING. September 1997 during the 21st German Annual Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI-97) Freiburg, Germany 1. Description Within the last years, the integration of heterogeneous sources of information has become an extremely important field of investigation. This is demonstrated by the recent US programs dealing with this topic (see for example "Intelligent Information Integration (I3)" by DARPA). The activities in this field aim at a logical joining of existing information systems ("legacy systems"). A feasible manner of integration allows the transparent access to different heterogeneous sources of information (i.e. federative databases, data warehouse). Another approach concentrates on the direct information exchange between systems (i.e standards like STEP, KIF, SUM; data transformators). Trying to make use of the information of previous systems regarding the new development is connected with this last approach which applies, above all, to the new development of knowledge-based systems (i.e. knowledge sharing and reuse). The actual problems of these integration approaches depend not only on the technical level dealing with the physical communication between different host families and systems (e.g. via Intranet and Internet), but also on the semantic level: information has to be interpreted, i.e. understood, by the existing applications. Thus, apart from the information itself the meaning of the information has to be defined and, if possible, to be represented. Particularly on this semantic level artificial intelligence has developed formalisms and techniques which model explicitly and declaratively the semantic contents of information and interpret these through appropriate inference mechanism. The examples of integration approaches below are based on these techniques: o terminological systems for the modelling of different types of documents and their sources (project KIT-MIHMA) o transformation rules between ontologies (project IMCOD) o description of mediators via rule-like formalisms (project TSIMMIS) o rules for the integration of database schemes (project HDB) The problem of information integration is also investigated in fields of research other than artificial intelligence. For examle in o Federative Databases Modern enterprises often employ different databases for storing different information. A transparent access to all data of a company requires i.e. the integration of database patterns. A special problem in this context presents the integration of different database paradigms (e.g. the integration of object-oriented and relational databases). o Data-Warehouse The application of data warehouse aims roughly at the integration of all available data sources of a company. As opposed to federative databases non-relationally stored data will be taken into consideration and data sources will be employed for the analysis mainly in order to support decision finding. o Workflow Workflow systems integrate application systems in process chains. Processes determine among others the information flow among the heterogeneous application systems. For this, the data of a system have to be transferred into the semantically equivalent data format of a different system. 1.1. Topics of the Workshop This workshop invites users, developers and researchers in the research fields of Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Data-Warehouse, and Workflow who are engaged in problems regarding the integration of heterogeneous information sources. The workshop has been an international annual event ever since then. SCOPE In today's information technologies, a single database can rarely meet a company's needs. Instead, multi-databases is the norm for most companies to run their daily operations and decision support systems. The technologies to develop and manage the multi-databases can be divided into data mining, data warehousing and client/server databases. Advances in data gathering, storage, and distribution technologies has out performed than the techniques for analyzing and understanding data. There is an urgent need for automated data mining and knowledge discovery in databases. Data mining is used to discover patterns, clusters and models from data which are then rendered in operational forms that are easy for people to visualize and understand. It is a general rule that the bigger the database, the more difficult it is to sustain high levels of performance. The key objective of data warehousing is to provide business executives with flexible access to vast quantities of information through loosely structured queries. Data warehousing is a continual process which enables a corporation to assemble operational and other data from a variety of internal and external sources. It transforms that data into consistent, high-quality, business information, distribute that information to the points of maximum value within the organizations and provide easy, flexible and fast access for busy non-technical users. In a client/server systems, users are capable of interconnecting various platforms efficiently and transparently to distribute data and application program across heterogeneous systems in a computer network. Application processing is developed between client and server workstations.
