The topics of the workshop cover advanced multimedia computing technologies where new approaches to support on-line accesses to information are needed. Client-server distributed multimedia systems are a practical approach to support heterogeneous data management (video clips, audio, images, and books). The kinds of data referred to by 'multimedia data' expand. Still images, texts, and books were included in this category, several years ago. Recently, moving pictures, especially video, audio, as well as 3D objects in virtual realities are added in the list. As a first issue, modeling these kinds of data is necessary for storing, retrieving, and editing these data adequately. The second issue is concerned with quality of transfer of these data through networks. The data and users are distributed over computer networks and real-time data transfer is required. So good quality transfer of data among them is needed. The third issue is the system architecture issue. Current systems are insufficient to support the management of multimedia data owning to their time-sampled nature. Problems such as data placement, buffer management, admission control and load balancing still exist. The extension of the database systems to support distributed multimedia applications thus require new mechanisms to ensure the synchronized presentation of multimedia data exchanges. 2. Similarly, if you are designing autonomous agents to operate in some environment, it may be necessary for them to reason about the state of the world to select appropriate actions. In recent years, many researchers have worked on developing logic-based agent theories and programming languages to address these needs. To produce adequate logical frameworks for these kinds of applications, one needs to integrate theories of mental states, action, and agent interaction. Topics of interest here include how to model: - action and change, - knowledge and perception, - goals, commitments, and rational choice of action, - belief revision/update, - ability of a team of agents to jointly achieve goals, - agent coordination and communication, - uncertainty (qualitative and quantitative treatments), etc. As well, one needs to find representation and reasoning techniques that are appropriate for the target applications, which vary in response-time requirements and opportunities for user intervention. Techniques in use include logic programming, modal theorem proving, model generation approaches, etc. We need a better understanding of the range of possible approaches, how they compare, and which are best for various applications. This symposium will provide a forum for researchers in this area to compare their approaches and discuss ways of addressing open problems. It should also allow people involved in other areas or applications of logic and attending ESSLLI'97 to learn more about agent research and contribute fresh perspectives. SYMPOSIUM FORMAT: The symposium will be held as part of ESSLLI'97. There will be five symposium sessions of 90 minutes each, one on each day of the second week of the school (Aug 18-22). The workshop has been an international annual event ever since then. SCOPE In today's information technologies, a single database can rarely meet a company's needs. Instead, multi-databases is the norm for most companies to run their daily operations and decision support systems. The technologies to develop and manage the multi-databases can be divided into data mining, data warehousing and client/server databases. Advances in data gathering, storage, and distribution technologies has out performed than the techniques for analyzing and understanding data. There is an urgent need for automated data mining and knowledge discovery in databases. Data mining is used to discover patterns, clusters and models from data which are then rendered in operational forms that are easy for people to visualize and understand. It is a general rule that the bigger the database, the more difficult it is to sustain high levels of performance. The key objective of data warehousing is to provide business executives with flexible access to vast quantities of information through loosely structured queries. Data warehousing is a continual process which enables a corporation to assemble operational and other data from a variety of internal and external sources. It transforms that data into consistent, high-quality, business information, distribute that information to the points of maximum value within the organizations and provide easy, flexible and fast access for busy non-technical users. In a client/server systems, users are capable of interconnecting various platforms efficiently and transparently to distribute data and application program across heterogeneous systems in a computer network. Application processing is developed between client and server workstations. The processing is initiated by the client and performed by the server, and both client and server cooperate to run an application. A client/server system increases processing power by separating the database management system from the application; the client as the front-end system handling the user interface and server as backend system accessing the database. Description Workflow management has gained increasing attention recently, since it allows the combination of a data-oriented view on applications, which is the traditional one for information systems, with a process-oriented one in which activities and their occurrences over time are modeled and supported properly. Workflow management has thus far been considered mostly in business applications, and a number of workflow management systems for business applications are already commercially available. Since workflow management combines influences from a variety of disciplines, including cooperative information systems, computer-supported cooperative work, groupware systems, or active databases, it has recently attracted the attention of non-business application domains as well. In particular, workflow management is of increasing interest to scientists and to engineers who, for example, carry out experiments in a laboratory (e.g., soil analysis, DNA sequencing), design work in a computerized environment or perform once-off processes (such as critical detector assembly). What such applications share is the fact that processes to be executed are frequently (sequences of) events with undetermined outcomes or outcomes which can evolve as the experiment advances, so that the structure of the entire process is difficult to determine in advance. Nevertheless, modeling, execution control, and documentation (for the purpose of reuse) are highly relevant. From a workflow point of view, the important features found in these applications include flexibility in structuring and modeling workflows with a complex (or nested) inner structure of individual steps, the treatment of failures which can be more complex than dealing with ordinary cases, or system functionality features such as browsing and visualization, documentation, or coupling with external tools, e.g., for analysis. The domain of scientific applications (in particular in the natural sciences) and that of engineering applications thus seem particularly appropriate for the exploitation of workflow technology, since they involve processes in which humans and machines interact in considerable numbers, and could benefit from the automation in the execution of such processes. However, the requirement for workflow management in these areas differs significantly from those in business. Consequently, there has been little work so far towards an in-depth understanding of the relevant issues. It is the goal of the proposed workshop to contribute towards closing this gap. In the light of the demanding questions and of the fact that commercial developments in the workflow management area have so far ignored scientific and engineering applications, this workshop seeks to bring together researchers in the field and aims at advancing the knowledge about scientific workflow management. 2. The Basque country is essentially a linguistic and cultural community. It has always meant keeping their eyes= =20 open on the world. Basque whalers and sailors have a long tradition of=20 trading and interchange with the Greeks, the Vikings, and the great Muslim sea trading nations. Christoper Columbas' map-maker was a Basque, as was th= e=20 first navigator to sail round the world, Juan Sebastian El Cano - the only= =20 captain to return from the Magellan expedition." ADMINISTRATIVE AND GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION Situated on either side of the Pyrenees mountains (the 'backbone' of the Ba= sque country) and bordering the Atlantic ocean, the official Basque name for the= =20 country is Euskal Herria. Administratively today, it is divided between France (three provinces of Baxe-Nafarra, Lapurdi and Xiberoa, 3000 sq. kms,= =20 250,000 inhabitants which form the Northen part) and Spain (four provinces = of=20 Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa, 18000 sq. kms, and a population of= =20 2,500,000 inhabitants, which form the Southern part). GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES More than half of the Basque country is formed by mountains of between 400 = and 2500 metres high, in a relatively anarchic layout. Throughout the country t= here are both many forests and rich pasturelands, freshwater springs, sharp risi= ng=20 peaks dominating long winding valleys, and massive cliffs plunging down into the ocean. Equally there are gentle and more accessible slopes ideal f= or=20 good farmland. The Pyrenean peaks axis slanting through the Basque country= =20 divides it into two main zones ; one, the Atlantic side, has a mild ocean= =20 climate and green landscape; the other, the meridional side, is predominant= ly=20 influenced by the Mediterranean climate and colour. THE NORTHEN BASQUE COUNTRY The Northern Basque country covers all the areas north of the river Bidasso= a.=20 Here the more modern coastal zone is in sharp contrast with the old farming= =20 traditions of the hinterland. It was Napolean III who, at the end of the l= ast century, began to make it a holiday seaside resort. The main economic activ= ity of the Northern Basque country is centred in and around Bayonne-Anglet-Biar= ritz (known as the BAB). It is predominantly a services sector, with a relativel= y=20 fast-growing industrial sector as well. It is worth noting that the nucleus= of international firms well-established here (in the fields of aeronautics,=20 smelting, electronics and telecommunications) has caused a development spin= -off of smaller and medium-sized firms in highly specialised areas. The BAB also= has the advantage of being situated in a truly Euro-region, with a population o= f=20 nearly 5 million multi-lingual inhabitants radiating over 200 kms on either= =20 side. It is an access to one of the most powerful and wealthy parts of the= =20 Iberian peninsula and an obligatory transit zone for all movement of people= =20 and goods from Northern to Southern Europe. CONFERENCE LOCATION : BIARRITZ Biarritz, where the conference is located, was dedicated to whaling and fis= hery activities until the end of the 18th century. Then, fishery economy went d= own and the city orientated towards health activities becoming a health resort. The golden Belle Epoque of princes, princesses, statesmen and intellectuals= =20 begun when Wellington's English officers shew to their compatriots the beau= ties of the city. But Biarritz really came into fashion when Napoleon III and hi= s=20 court choose it as his holidays seaside resort.=20 Now, Biarritz is mainly dedicated to tourism. The visitor has a variety of attractions to choose from, depending on the= =20 season. There are the many fine sandy beaches where you can see local and= =20 international surfers ride the rollers sweeping in from the Atlantic. There= is the magnificent forest of Chiberta behind the dunes, with a wonderful golf= =20 course laid out among the pine trees. At any time of the year you can enjoy= a=20 good game of golf or try your chance at the gaming tables of the Casino.
