Constraint database systems represent a new database paradigm that aims at coherently integrating research results from the area of constraint-based programming, logic programming and databases. The recent success of the constraint-based programming paradigm is based on the direct contribution of constraints to program specification, implementation and maintenance. Constraints are the normal language of discourse for many high-level applications; built-in constraint solvers, and active constraints contribute to efficient implementation; and the clarity and brevity of constraint programs simplifies program maintenance. For large scale applications such as geographic information systems (GIS), the efficient processing and management of large sets of constraints is very important. The objective of this workshop is to bring together database practitioners, researchers and application users to share and explore their views on constraint database technology addressing languages and their expressiveness, architectures, models, indexing techniques for, and optimization of queries on large constraint sets, and their application in areas like spatial databases, geographic information systems, scheduling and routing problems. Delphi (elevation 573 m.) is located in a magnificent natural setting about 170 km N/W of Athens on the undercliffs of Mount Parnassus. The drive from Athens to Delphi takes about three hours. Delphi hosts one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. Although today it is just a small village, historically Delphi has been one of the cornerstones of ancient Greek civilization. Indeed, in antiquity Delphi was the seat of the oracle of Apollo, which was particularly active during the 7th and the 6th centuries BC and had to be consulted for essentially every major political decision. Ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the "navel of the world". The shrine was administered by a panhellenic confederation, which every four years organized the Pythian Games; these were second only to the Olympic Games, but with more prominence on music and drama, as they were dedicated to Apollo. WEATHER -------- January is winter time in Greece. The temperature at Delphi in January typically ranges from 5 to 15 degrees C (41-59 degrees F), with a small probability of being lower than 5 degrees C (41 degrees F). CURRENCY AND EXCHANGE --------------------- The Greek currency is the drachma (DR). In September 1996, 1 US Dollar was approximately 235 DR. Currency can be exchanged either at the Athens airport or in Delphi. TIME ---- Greece uses +2 hour GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). THINGS TO DO ------------- Delphi's archeological site has many interesting monuments and temples, including the sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre where the Delphic festivals were held, the stadium, the Kastalia Fountain where the Pythia, priestess of Apollo, would bathe before uttering her oracular utterances, and the tholos or rotunda, one of the most remarkable architectural constructions of antiquity (depicted on the conference poster). The collection of the Delphi museum consists exclusively of objects found on the archaeological site, including the famous bronze statue of the charioteer and an ancient copy of the sacred stone "omphalos" (the "navel of the world"). In Delphi and the surrounding villages you can find tavernas, restaurants, coffee houses, and bars. >From Delphi you can visit the ski facilities of Mount Parnassus (elevation 2400 m), the town of Itea (17 km), a pleasant summer resort by the sea, the town of Amfissa (22 km), surrounded by a forest of olive trees, and the monastery of Hosios Loukas (36 km), an outstanding example of Byzantine art and architecture. More details on the project follow ======================================================================== CHOROCHRONOS: A RESEARCH NETWORK FOR SPATIOTEMPORAL DATABASE SYSTEMS (http://www.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr/projects/chorochronos.html) PROJECT OVERVIEW Spatial and temporal databases have been important sub-areas of database research for a long time. Researchers in both areas have always felt that there are important connections in the problems addressed by each area, and the techniques and tools utilized for their solution. There are many publications in temporal databases which conclude with the phrase [the ideas in this paper can be extended to spatial data management. But up to now little has been done, particularly in Europe, for the systematic interaction and syn- ergy of these two areas so that the respective claims can be formally verified, refuted or appropriately qualified. CHOROCHRONOS aims to achieve exactly this kind of interaction and synergy between European researchers. The main objective of CHOROCHRONOS is to allow European researchers working on spatial and temporal databases to achieve a higher understanding of each other's work, integrate their results and methodologies, and advance the state of the art in this area through an intensive three-year research program. This will culminate in the design and partial implementation of an architecture for Spatiotempo- ral Database Systems (STDBMS). CHOROCHRONOS will cover issues related to the ontology, structure and representation for space and time, mod- els and languages for STDBMS, graphical user interfaces for spatiotem- poral information, query processing algorithms, storage structures and indexing techniques for spatiotemporal databases, and based on results on these issues will propose a reference architecture for Spatiotempo- ral Database Systems.
