Conference Announcement The 3rd biennial IDS workshop will be held in Napier University's Craiglockhart Campus in the south-west of Edinburgh about 3 miles from the city centre, with spectacular views across the city and the Pentland hills. Edinburgh has been described as 'one of the world's most beautiful capital cities'. It is steeped in Scottish history with an ancient castle and a magnificent palace set in acresof green parkland and dominated by an extinct volcano. It features a carefully preserved medieval Old Town and a New Town, a perfect example of 18th century architecture. The city has excellent cultural attractions including museums, galleries, world class theatres, and an extensive range of restaurants. Edinburgh is well served by motorways, direct rail links with all the UK's principal cities and an airport with excellent connections with London and numerous European destinations. IDS-3 is preceded by the BNCOD14 from the 3rd - 5th July, also to be held at Napier University. A Summer School will follow BNCOD14, for database research students. The aim is to assist students with their research and writing-up. The organisers hope that IDS participants will take the opportunity of attending BNCOD14 and/or the Summer School, and enjoy the intervening weekend in the city of Edinburgh. Invited Speakers Matthew Chalmers is a research scientist in the HCI group of the Union Bank of Switzerland's Information Technology Research Lab (Ubilab). He is extending his earlier research on 3D visualisation of sets of documents to the visualisation of financial data such as time-series information on stocks and shares. In his presentation he will put forward for discussion several issues associated with designing 'good' database interfaces with particular emphasis on 3D interfaces. Social Events A social programme encouraging interaction and discussion between delegates has been devised. On the evening of Monday 8th July there will be a welcome reception. On Tuesday afternoon following in the tradition of previous IDS workshops, the programme has time set aside for delegates to enjoy a walk in theareas surrounding the workshop venue. This year's venue allows delegates to choose between an active hill walk or alternatively a leisurely town centre sight-seeing tour. This will ensure that everyone can work up an appetite for the conference dinner later that evening. During the workshop delegates will be able to make use of the on-site sports facilities which include a swimming pool, tennis court, croquet lawn, gym and table tennis. This year BNCOD14 is followed by the 3rd International Workshop on Interfaces toDatabase Systems (IDS3) from the 8 - 10th July. Invited Speakers Stan Zdonik, Professor of Computer Science, Brown University, USA, is internationally renowned for his work on object oriented database systems. He has published extensively in leading conferences and journals. Recently, Stan's research interests have focused on new architectures for distributed informationsystems, specifically dissemination-based information systems. His talk will describe a particular form of dissemination that uses the communication channelsas a storage medium.
