Languages play a central role in this area since they are the vehicle through which this information is described and accessed. Proper design choices for these languages will be a requirement for successful and scalable systems. Much of the information in a digital library is not stored in a conventional database, yet database functionality such as expressive and efficient forms of access is required. However, in spite of the benefits which OO, high communication bandwidth and standard middleware solutions bring, there are still many problems which prevent wide use of this technology within and among enterprises. In the project, the University of Twente cooperates with the ING-bank, which is a major bank in the Netherlands. Other Dutch Universities work in the same project on related subjects, like e.g. data mining. The subject studied by the University of Twente covers parallelism for typical the banking application, which consists of OLTP and large, statistical decision support queries. The bank wants to run OLTP at a highest possible throughput and concurrently run DSS queries on a transaction consistent version of the database. Currently the bank runs Parallel Oracle on various hardware platforms and the performance is not sufficient. The University of Twente will exploit the experience in parallel database systems obtained from the PRISMA project. In that project, a parallel, relational, main memory DBMS was built and a lot of experience was gained in the area of parallel processing of complex queries. In the IMPACT project, we will try to make the PRISMA experience practical. In the IMPACT project we are looking for a researcher, who could be a PhD-student or a PostDoc. The book represents something of a departure in the teaching of database systems. The approach at Stanford has been to use the first database course, CS145, to cover the material most useful to the great majority of CS students: databases from the point of view of the database designer, user, and application programmer. This course is taken by advanced undergraduates and beginning MS or PhD students. While not required of these populations, enrollment has increased strongly since we adopted the new approach. Some of the features of the book are: * Comprehensive coverage of all aspects of SQL programming. * Design of databases using both the E/R model and the OO-standard ODL are covered and contrasted. * Explains object-oriented and object-relational database programming with coverage of the OO-standard OQL and object-oriented features of SQL3. * Covers advanced database programming, including integrity constraints, assertions, triggers, and recursion in SQL3. Although CS145 is a one-quarter course, we believe there is enough material in the book for a full semester.
