SAC '97
=======

Over the past ten years, the ACM Symposium on  Applied  Computing has become a
primary forum for applied computer scientists and application developers  from
around the world to interact and present their work.  SAC '97 is sponsored  by
the ACM Special Interest Groups SIGAda, SIGAPP, SIGBIO,  SIGCUE,  and
SIGICE.

Authors are invited to contribute original papers or abstracts for a poster
session in all areas of experimental computing and application development for
the technical sessions.  Panel and workshop proposals which deal with the 
symposium themes are encouraged.  The special tracks form the heart of the 
symposium.  Papers and poster abstracts relating to the specific tracks should
be mailed to the respective track chairs.

In addition to the topics covered by the tracks listed below, papers and
posters are solicited in geographic information systems, image processing, 
biomolecular computing, cognitive science, biology, chemistry, physics, 
geosciences, electronic libraries, office automation and other areas of 
applications development.  Papers or posters not relating to a specific 
track or spanning more than one track should be mailed to the Program Chair.

Special Track on Database Technology
====================================
A special track on Database Technology will be held in SAC '97.   It
will be a forum for engineers, researchers and practitioners to share
technical ideas and experiences relating to implementation and application
of database technologies.   Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:

           Object-oriented databases        Multimedia databases
           Active databases                 Mobile databases
           WWW-based databases              Textual databases
           Information discovery            Cooperative databases

           OLAP                             Workflow Management

PAPERS
======

Original papers dealing with any aspect of computing applications will be 
considered for presentation and publication in the SAC '97 Proceedings.  This 
includes three categories of submissions:  1) original and unpublished 
research; 2) reports of innovative computing applications in the arts, 
sciences, engineering, business, government, education and industry; and, 
3) reports of successful technology transfer to new problem domains.  Each 
category of submissions will be reviewed by peer groups appropriate to that 
category.  Accepted papers in all categories will be published in the 
conference proceedings.  Expanded versions of selected papers from all 
categories will be considered for publication in the ACM/SIGAPP quarterly 
Applied Computing Review or one of the other participating SIGs' publications.

Submission guidelines must be strictly followed:

* Mail six (6) copies of the paper to the appropriate Track Chair.  (For 
  electronic submission consult the appropriate track chair.)

* The author(s) name(s) and address(es) must not appear in the body of the 
  paper; self-reference should be in the third person.  This is to facilitate 
  blind review.

* The body of the paper should not exceed 4000 words (about  15 pages, double-
  spaced).

* A separate cover sheet included with the submission should show the title of
  the paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the address 
  (including e-mail, telephone, and fax) to which correspondence should be
  sent.

* All submissions must be received by AUGUST 15, 1996.

Scope:

Applications such as manufacturing automation, automated stock-trading,
avionics, medical informatics, intelligent transportation systems,
telecommunications, multimedia systems, workflow systems, etc. make
substantial use of databases but require support beyond those provided
by traditional databases.  These include support for timeliness and for
rule-based activiation of tasks --- topics that are being investigated
by researchers working on active and real-time database technologies.
However, the understanding of the application requirements, the available
technology, and the nexus between research and practice, are still nascent.

This one-day workshop is to provide a forum whereby practitioners and
researchers can exchange ideas --- primarily with a focus on data management
issues in applications with active and real-time requirements.  Rather than
being a forum in which to report only new research results, this workshop is
to provide a means for researchers to understand the needs that application
developers have, and for developers to learn about solutions available today.
This should assist in the discussion of specific issues, problem areas, and
potential solutions, and provide impetus for further research as well as the
transition of available technology.

In order to promote the discussions, we solicit brief papers (up to 5 pages,
submitted electronically to the program chair) that describe technical
contributions in the area w.r.t. research, on-going work, implementation
efforts etc.  The selected papers will be provided to the participants at
the Workshop, and will be published subsequently in a proceedings by ACM.
The workshop will consist of brief invited and paper presentations in the
first half of the day, followed by in-depth discussions during the latter
half of the day.
