INFORMATION INTERCHANGE An issue that arises in using Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) systems with other real-world applications is how to have a KRR system communicate and share information with one or more other information sources, including other KRR systems. The historical approach to the problem of information interchange has been to connect two information sources, e.g., databases, agents, expert systems, KRR systems, Bayesian Networks, etc.) in an ad hoc manner, designing a custom interface for each of specialized information sources. A better approach is to find common methodologies by which information and knowledge can be shared across several heterogeneous sources. This problem area is often called the problem of knowledge sharing, or information interchange. It falls under several research areas including but not limited to those listed below. o Languages (Interlingua, content knowledge representation languages, protocol languages, database query languages) o Integrated User Interfaces o Reasoning (hybrid reasoning, ontological reasoning, analogical reasoning) o Agent Mediators, Data Mining, WWW Searching Agents o Architectures for knowledge sharing (multi-level knowledge systems, wrappers, data flow hierarchies) o Knowledge Translation and Integration (Heterogeneous source integration, reasoning with conflicting knowledge) o Ontologies (taxonomy and constraint systems, large ``common-knowledge'' ontologies, e.g., Penman, CYC, Wordnet, etc., Representation and Reasoning with Ontologies) Without restricting focus to any specific language or protocol, this session will be concerned with the common underlying theories, formalisms, etc. which explore and define the area, and ultimately enable the sharing of information between implemented systems. We solicit papers which explore these issues as well as those which discuss implementations of solutions to the problems of information interchange and knowledge sharing. Additional topics of interest include (but are not limited to): o Experience(s) integrating disparate knowledge sources, for example, a case history. o Languages (e.g., KIF, KQML) and theories of knowledge interchange (e.g., First Order Predicate Calculus, semantic networks). o Descriptions of practical experience(s) with KRR systems(s), for example, a critique of the utility of a particular KRR system for knowledge interchange. o Issues that arise in exchanging different kinds of knowledge, for example visual knowledge and propositional knowledge. The previous workshop was held in Lithuania in 1994. The Baltic workshops are thought as an international forum for technical discussion among researchers and developers of database and information systems. The aim of the workshop is to consolidate views as well as to enhance communication between the database researchers and the community that uses database systems for building information systems. STRUCTURE AND TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop language is English (talks as well as publications). The workshop is planned to include two main tracks: traditional research track and advanced technology track. To activate and motivate PhD students the workshop programme will be preceeded by one-day Doctoral Consortium chaired by invited professors. RESEARCH TRACK Academic researchers are invited to submit extended abstracts describing their research activities. WIDE Project WIDE (Workflow on Intelligent Distributed database Environment) is an ESPRIT project aiming at the development of a next-generation workflow management system based on state- of-the-art database technology. Key issues in database technology are integrated extended transaction management and active rule processing. The project is organised in five main work packages: transaction management, active rule processing, database integration, workflow methodology, and end user testing. Partners in WIDE are SEMA Group Spain, University of Twente, Politecnico di Milano, ING Bank Nederland, and Hospital General de Manresa. The project is scheduled to start at November 1st 1995 and to last 2= year. The main tasks in WIDE of the University of Twente are located in the extended transaction management and workflow methodology work packages. In one direction, this topic includes recent research on limit laws and zero-one laws. A limit law holds in a class of finite structures if all properties decribable in some logical language have limiting probabilities as structure size grows; a zero-one law holds (as in the classic work of Glebskii et. al. and Fagin) if the limiting probabilities are always 0 or 1. This work has been applied to areas such as analysis of algorithms for database query optimization and polynomial time approximation of NP optimization problems. In the other direction, this topic covers use of probabilistic methods to establish lower bounds in circuit complexity. Particular emphasis will be placed on the connections between first-order logic and constant depth circuits with unbounded fan-in. While there will be natural connections to the workshop on "Descriptive complexity and finite models", here calculation of probabilities has center stage. Attendance at the workshop is open to all. Original papers, demonstrations, tutorials, and posters are invited in every area of such languages.
