Subsequently, the call for workshop proposals can be found. The conference is supported by SGAICO (Swiss Group for Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, being part of SI and member of ECCAI). General Description ------------------- It is more and more acknowledged that knowledge is one of the most important assets of organisations. Especially in industrialised countries with expensive but well-educated employees, products and services must be outstanding in terms of innovation, flexibility, and creativity. A prerequisite for being able to face current and future challenges is the systematic management of the knowledge assets. Studies indicate that no more than 20 percent of the knowledge available in organisations is really being used (Bilanz 1/95). What tremendous effects would it have if we could make use of 30 percent or more! Although the technology for an improved management of the key success factor "knowledge" is ready to use, we can notice that organisations are widely ignorant of its availability. Against this background, the conference has two major goals, each one being associated with a special track. Track 1: Provide Strategic Information on Knowledge Management (KM) =================================================================== The conference acts as a communications medium to top executives for making clear - what KM is, and - how KM can improve organisational structures and processes. To this end, we have a one-day special program for decision makers that gives high-level, strategic information about both of above points. The program includes: Invited Talks ------------- by well-known experts of their field. They will give overviews of current KM technology available and will clearly work out how it can affect organisational change. VIP Round-Table Discussions --------------------------- where the top executives have the opportunity to discuss innovative ideas in an informal setting with the invited speakers and the other experts. They can also ask whatever they always wanted to ask about KM, can formulate their doubts and reservations and will get answers from the experts. Track 2: Technology Transfer ============================ This two-day conference track aims at bridging the gap between application experts who will actually set up KM tools in an organisation and the technology experts who are familiar with the technology underlying the KM tools. Thus, the conference will make sure that those people who will actually establish the KM technology in an organisation become fully aware of its potential and get a clear idea what is currently possible (and what is not). Participants of Track 2 will bring back into their organisations detailed and well-founded information about KM and its feasibility. Thus, the information that can be obtained by the participants of Track 1 and Track 2 is complementary to each other The main focus of Track 2 will be on workshops. Workshops: --------- Each workshop is dedicated to a specific subarea considered relevant for KM. Contributions are sought that show how a certain approach solves a clearly outlined, practical problem. The reviewing process will take care that only those contributions will be accepted which give clear statements about the main issues and are comprehensible by those participants who are no experts in the field. To avoid toy problems and purely academic approaches being discussed in a workshop, every paper must clearly describe the (real-world) problem being tackled and what the added value of solving that problem is. The call for papers for a workshop should contain a description of two or more representative, practical problems which ought to be used by the authors of a workshop paper whenever the approach discussed permits this. Through the workshops we obtain a valuable compilation of what is currently possible and what not, what is easy and what is still difficult, and what is out of reach. Technology experts (and via them, decision makers) will thus obtain more information about how to design and install efficient KM at her or his company. A considerable part of the workshop time will be assigned to compare the presented approaches. This will be of great value from an application point of view as well as a scientific viewpoint. Exhibition and Demonstrations: ----------------------------- There will be demonstrations of products as well as of running but not yet commercial systems which can be useful as tools for various aspects of KM. ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS =========================== We are looking for people with strong theoretical and practical background willing to organise a workshop on a topic relevant to the overall conference theme of knowledge management technologies. In order to share the work and to cover a wider range of practical and theoretical aspects it might be useful to have two organisers per workshop. Thus, feel free to submit a proposal together with a colleague of yours. Workshop format: --------------- To help workshop contributors find practically relevant problems and to achieve a high degree of consistency of the contributions, each workshop will send out a call for papers with a description of two or more representative, concrete tasks. Each task covers a real-world problem being related to knowledge management, and is formulated in a way that allows a great variety of solutions. Papers are sought which describe how one (or more) of these tasks can be solved by a certain approach. The description should be detailed enough for participants who are no experts in the field to understand the central points. It may be the case that a certain approach cannot be applied to one of the exemplary tasks formulated in the call for papers because the approach is designed to take advantage of the properties of a certain subclass of tasks and these properties are not given with the exemplary tasks. In such a case a paper may introduce its own problem as long as it is a practically relevant one. Workshop contributions may either present an innovative approach, or an innovative application of existing technology, or describe an impressive success story. Evaluation criteria will be: - practical relevance (of the problem dealt with and the added value achieved) - originality of the approach and/or solution - clarity of argumentation (why and how does the presented approach solve the selected task?) - how comprehensible is the contribution by participants who are no experts in the field? For the conference proceedings a full paper with a maximum of 12 pages (A4 .....) must be provided. The best papers will be selected for a book on the state of the art in Knowledge Management. An award will be given to the most significant workshop contribution. The six preceding workshops have given POS the tradition of a workshop where active researchers discuss up-to-date research issues in an atmosphere of lively debate, and the collective proceedings are generally regarded as a major source of research level knowledge about persistent systems. In May 1996, POS7 will be held in Cape May, New Jersey, USA. Cape May is a quaint Jersey "shore" town, that should provide a relaxing backdrop for the workshop. POS7 is being held in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania. It is timed to be just after the ACM FRC (PLDI, PODC, ICFP...) in Philadelphia and just before SIGMOD in Montreal. The main issue these workshops address is how best to support the implementation of long-lived, data-intensive, application systems. The challenges are: o What languages enable good quality programs to be persistent and interact with data over very long periods; o How to build stores that will hold large numbers of objects reliably for very long periods; o How to provide and support that combined technology efficiently; o How to design systems that effectively exploit such persistent technology; and o How to build, maintain and operate such Persistent Application Systems. The format of these workshops encourages everyone to participate actively in discussions. The attendance is limited to 40-50 active researchers. Keynote discussions have been used to focus the debate onto current research issues. Pre-printed papers are available to all participants and the discussion is expected to lead to improvement of the papers and a record of their interrelationships. The developed papers will probably be published in the Springer Verlag Workshop Series (this is currently subject to negotiation.) Location ======== Cape May is a quaint Victorian resort town on the Jersey shore. The hotel is directly across from the ocean and just a few minutes walk into the main part of town, where there are many places to eat and drink. Bird watching is also a main attraction. We will provide transportation between Philadelphia and Cape May. Industry/Applications Track We are continuing the recent trend in the VLDB conferences to have an industrial track in order to foster closer interaction between the industrial and the research communities. We encourage submission of papers describing work on integrating new technologies in products and applications, on experiences with standard and novel techniques, and on the identification of unsolved issues that pose challenges to and require attention by the research community. We consider this conference a unique and important forum to discuss experiences in applying DBMSs to real-life situations among practicioners and between practicioners and researchers. About Bombay Bombay which is located on the west coast of India is the capital of Maharashtra state, and the business capital and economic powerhouse of India. It is the fastest moving, most affluent and most industrialised city in India. Bombay's very cosmopolitan population is estimated to be around 10 million. The main languages spoken in the city are Hindi and Marathi, but a visitor can easily manage his/her business/travel with English. Aims and scope: --------------- Advances in database technology, wireless communications and distributed computing systems will enable mobile users to access information everywhere and at any time. As the technology matures, millions of people will become mobile users communicating with one another and accessing various information resources using portable computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), wireless radio and cellular equipment. Given the large distances and relative scarceness of inhabited areas in Australia, the demand for ubiquitous computing can be met by developments in mobile computing. Examples of applications which are in need of mobile access to computing resources include agriculture, road safety control, bushfire control, mass disasters, wildlife monitoring, advanced communications systems, non-stop business activity and many others. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners with mobile communications background, database research interests, advanced applications and distributed computing systems research & development skills to discuss all aspects of emerging mobile computing paradigm. Workshop format: ---------------- The workshop will be limited to 20-40 participants. It is intended to organise 4 sessions (2 morning and 2 afternoon sessions): o Mobile databases o Wireless communications support for mobile computing o Advanced applications on mobile computing platforms o Operating systems support for mobile computing. We intend to organise a panel discussion after the last session where we can discuss research issues, organisational and technical problems including an establishment of a mobile computing infrastructure to be used by researchers and developers. Each accepted paper will be given 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. If necessary, the workshop will include poster sessions. Selection of papers will take place on the basis of position papers and extended abstracts clearly stating the problem, related work of others, proposed solution and attempts, and/or discussion. The papers will be reviewed by the program committee. Papers and conclusions will appear in the participants edition of the workshop post-proceedings. All accepted papers will be made available through FTP/WWW. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to bring full papers at the workshop. 4. Location and organisation: -------------------------- The workshop will be held at Monash University, Caulfield Campus, Melbourne. Transport facilities are reasonably good: train, bus, and tram links from the City to the campus. The week between 29 January and 2 February will be a busy week with Australasian Database Conference(ADC'96, 29-30 January), Australasian Computer Science Conference (ACSC'96, 31 January - 2 February) and Computing: The Australasian Theory Symposium (CATS'96, 29-30 January) all running concurrently. Records may consist of formatted fields, text, images, voice, animation, etc. A sample query may be AD in a collection of 2-d color images, find images that are similar to a sunset photograph. The idea is to use feature extraction functions which map an image into a point in feature space so that spatial access methods (SAMs) can be used to accelerate the search. This tutorial presents step-by-step guidelines a set of decision rules useful in building ER diagrams, and a case study problem.
