How to come to Pune ------------------- The nearest International airport to Pune is Bombay, which is very well connected to the rest of the world. Bombay to Pune Road - Distance is about 180 kms and taxi service is available from the airport to a place called Dadar from where taxis for Pune leave. The taxis can also be booked on shareable basis. A taxi fully booked by you can cost upto Rs. 800/-. If on shareable basis, each seat will be for about Rs. 175/-. The road being a very busy one and through hilly regions, it will take about 4 to 5 hrs to reach Pune. A very good bus service also exists between Bombay and Pune with buses leaving every 15 mins. The objective of the project is to design and develop a distributed image DBMS (tentatively called DISIMA), which, on the one hand, provides mechanisms and techniques for efficient image compression, fast image transmission, and flexibility in content-based querying of images, and, on the other hand, provides convenient and uniform interface for users to access image data from multiple, disparate source repositories. As such, it encompasses the fields of (a) image processing, (b) database management, and (c) interoperable information systems. The funding for this effort is secured from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada in the form of a four year Strategic Grant (1995-99). This project is associated with a separate, on-going research project on multimedia data management. The latter is funded by the Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research (CITR) which is one of the Canadian Networks of Centres of Excellence. The focus of this work (so far) is object-oriented modeling of SGML/HyTime-compliant multimedia documents. The project team has strengths in image processing, object data management and interoperability. We are seeking one research associate with special expertise in image storage systems to join our team to complement our expertise. Appointment will initially be for one year, renewable for up to four years based on performance. We are especially interested in individuals with the following qualifications: * A Ph.D. degree (or in the last stages of obtaining it) * Preferably prior research on multimedia systems with particular emphasis on multimedia data management and image databases * Prior research on object-oriented database technology (both projects take an object-oriented approach to managing multimedia objects) * Expertise in image storage systems, coding/compression techniques and indexing methods * Ability to work in a team environment interacting with graduate students on a daily basis. The fundamental distributed data management techniques will be reviewed, their incarnation in object-oriented systems will be discussed as well as the particular problems of distributed object systems. This tutorial will also highlight the open problems and discuss the emerging standards in this area. #3 Index Multimedia Databases - 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. ------------------------------------------------ Instructor: Christos Faloutsos, ATT&T Bell Laboratories, and University of Maryland College Park, Maryland This tutorial surveys state-of-the-art methods for storing and retrieving multimedia data from large databases. Records may consist of formatted fields, text, images, voice, animation, etc. A sample query may be AD in a collection of 2-d color images, find images that are similar to a sunset photograph. The idea is to use feature extraction functions which map an image into a point in feature space so that spatial access methods (SAMs) can be used to accelerate the search. This tutorial will examine the properties of good feature extraction functions, highlight subtle problems, and give solutions. Since the development of recent telecommunications concepts (such as intelligent network and personal communication services) cannot be realized without sophisticated database services, efficient and reliable database management is becoming increasingly important in telecommunications operations. Because of the growing importance of this area, the International Journal of Engineering Intelligent Systems is planning a special issue on Databases and Telecommunications for Summer 1996. The 1st OHS workshop was held at ECHT '94 and gathered several prominent researchers from the field. Participants where either invited based on previous research records or selected based on submitted position papers. Participants where equally divided between well-known people and new-comers, which provided an excellent forum for exchange of experiences and ideas, discussion of issues, and presentation of existing and new approaches. The 2nd OHS workshop will follow in the footsteps of the 1st, in the following ways: o The workshop is planned for two consecutive days. o Participants will be invited based on previous research records or selected based on submitted position papers; approximately half of the participants will be selected based on submitted position papers. o Workshop attendance will be limited to 15-20 participants to ensure that the group is small enough for all attendants to participate actively in the discussions. o Accepted position papers will be distributed electronically before the workshop and a WWW-server will provide the latest workshop material. o The workshop will continue the work on the two main issues raised during the 1st OHS workshop: interoperability standards and reference models for OHS. o Results and position papers from the workshop will be published as a technical report from Aalborg University after the workshop. The overall goal of the 2nd workshop is to provide a forum for exchange of information and discussion of topics for researchers sharing interests in OHS. The more specific goals of the workshop are three-fold: 1) to provide the latest results from ongoing well-known research projects in the area (e.g., DHM, Microcosm, Multicard, Hyperform, SP4, Chimera and WWW), 2) to allow research topics and new approaches to be presented and discussed, and 3) to work towards common standards and reference models for OHS. --------------- Workshop agenda --------------- The following preliminary outline of the workshop is an attempt to provide a program that will help achieve the workshop goals: Saturday, March 16, 1996: Welcome Presentations by invited speakers (morning sessions) Presentations and discussions of topics (from position papers) (afternoon sessions) Informal dinner Sunday, March 17, 1996: Presentations and discussions of topics (from position papers) (morning sessions) Standards and reference models (afternoon sessions) Conclusion The first morning will be used to present and discuss the latest results from existing OHS projects.
