Aims and Scope: ------------------ The combination of network technologies for mobile data communication with portable end systems -- such as sub-notebooks, palmtops or PDAs -- is the technological base for realizing the vision of information access for `anyone, anytime, anywhere'. At the same time, global information systems such as the World-Wide Web begin to emerge in stationary network environments. The combination of both technologies holds the potential of a truly ubiquitous access to substantial parts of the human knowledge. However, the visualization of information on mobile end systems, especially in globally distributed scenarios, has to cope with the intrinsic limitations of mobile hardware and network technology, such as low and variable bandwidth or resource-poor end systems. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researches, developers and practitioners working in all facets of mobile and multimedia computing networking. The workshop will serve as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art research, development, and implementation of mobile visualization systems, technologies and applications. Workshop format: ------------------- Participation will be limited to about 60 people to encourage discussion. Each accepted paper will be given 20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes for discussion. The format of the workshop will include poster sessions as well as numerous exchange opportunities, and problem sessions may be formed for further discussion. Course Instructor: David Maier, Ph.D. Guest Lecturer: Stanley Zdonik, Ph.D. Object Technology has been successfully applied to software analysis and design, programming languages and operating systems over the past two decades. More recently, object-oriented database management systems have entered the marketplace, which apply object technology to information processing. These three, one-day short courses provide a solid grounding in object-oriented database fundamentals, current commercial systems, advanced prototypes and important research trends in the area. The courses are particularly useful for those facing a choice among object-oriented DBMSs, or between object databases and other advanced DBMS systems. 1. Introduction to Object-Oriented Database Management Systems starts with the motivation for object databases, from the programming language and data management sides. It covers basic object-oriented concepts and presents object database features through detailed examination of three example systems. It concludes with an exploration of alternative approaches, including object-relational hybrids, and a discussion of selection criteria for choosing an object-oriented database management system. 2. Object-Oriented Database Features and Implementation gives a more in-depth examination of object database features, with particular attention to how commercial products differ and the consequences of those variations. It then turns to implementation issues, including configurations for object database system distribution. The final section discusses the role of object databases in program and data interoperability, including their use in three-tier client-server architectures. 3. Object-Oriented Query Languages and Processing begins with the principles of database query languages and a discussion of what are the new issues for querying object-oriented databases. It then presents example object query languages, including OQL, the query language commponent of the ODMG-93 draft object database standard. The second part of the course examines the optimization and execution of object database queries, including algebraic approaches and indexing techniques. Who should attend: Introduction to Object-Oriented Database Management Systems assumes minimal background in object-oriented languages and database systems. It is intended for database application developers and technical manager who want an awareness of this new breed of database systems, and who may be facing a choice of object database systems, or between object databases and alternative approaches. Object-Oriented Database Features and Implementation will appeal to the same audience as the Introduction course, as well as system developers of both object-oriented and extended relational systems. It will cover the design space of object databases, from both external and internal viewpoints. He has been chairman of the program committee of the ACM International Conference on the Management of Data, and served on the committees for the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems and the first conference on Object-Oriented Programming Systems, Languages and Applications. He also served as an associate editor of ACM Transactions on Database Systems. Dr. Maier has consulted with Tektronix, Inc., Servio Corporation, the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC), Digital Equipment Corporation, Altair, Honeywell, Texas Instruments, IBM, Microsoft, and Object Design, among others. He is a founding member of the Data-Intensive Systems Center (DISC), a joint project of OGI and Portland State University. He is the author of books on relational databases, logic programming and object-oriented databases, as well as papers in database theory, object-oriented databases and scientific database. He received the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1984. His Ph.D. was awarded in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science by Princeton University in 1978. Dr. Stanley Zdonik is an associate professor of Computer Science at Brown University, Providence, RI, and has been on the faculty there since 1983. He worked for Bolt, Beranek and Newman from 1971 to 1976 and at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science from 1976 to 1983. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1983 and was awarded the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 1986. For the past nine years, he has managed the Object-Oriented Database Research Group at Brown University. He has written over 50 papers on object-oriented databases and is the co-editor of the books Readings in Object-Oriented Database Systems (with D. Maier) and Implementing Persistent Object Bases (with A. Dearle and G. Shaw). He has served as an associate editor of the ACM Transactions on Office Information Systems and is currently an associate editor for IEEE Office Knowledge Engineering, the VLDB Journal, and the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems. The Third International Conference of the ACPC will take place at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, Sept. 22 -25. 1996 and is intended as a forum for both researchers and practitioners in the field. Beside the traditional topics special emphasis should be given to parallel databases and parallel input/output. Call for Papers --------------- We invite submissions of papers presenting original research in topics including but not limited to the following areas: - Databases - I/O - Algorithms - Applications - Architectures - Languages - Compilers - Programming Environments for parallel computation including high-performance computing. Contributors are invited to send a full paper not exceeding 6000 words (roughly 12 pages) in English to the e-mail address: acpc96@ifi.uni-klu.ac.at. Submitted files must be in uuendocded (preferably compressed) PostScript format - as created on most Unix systems by cat paper.ps | compress | uuencode paper.ps.Z > paper.uue. Please try to check that your postscript file can be printed on more than one kind of laser printers. If your program requests it, assume that the document will be printed on a 300dpi printer. The electronic submissions should consist of two e-mails: the first containing an ASCII coverpage, containing the author's full name, address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, a 100-word abstract and keywords. Papers may also be submitted on paper in six copies to the chairman of the Program Committee. The proceedings are intended to be published in the Series "Lecture Notes in Computer Science" by the Springer Verlag. For information about the format requirements of the camera-ready form see our home page (see below). Authors are expected to attend the conference and present their papers. Tutorials --------- Proposals are solicited for tutorials covering all aspects of the conference topics, but especially issues of parallel databases and parallel I/O. Proposals should contain the level (introductory, intermediate and advanced), and a schedule of the tutorial. Some information about the author should be added. Proposals should be sent (preferably electronically) to the e-mail address: acpc96@ifi.uni-klu.ac.at or by surface mail to the chairman of the Program Committee. Posters ------- A poster session will be organized to give an opportunity for presenting works in a preliminary stage. Exhibitions and Demonstrations ------------------------------ Vendors are solicited to make proposals to present their novel concepts and products.
