ROCK & ROLL is a Deductive Object Oriented Database (DOOD) system developed by the Department of Computing & Electrical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. It consists of three integrated components, an object-oriented data model, an imperative object-oriented data manipulation language ROCK (Rule Object Computational Kernel) and a declarative object-oriented logic query language ROLL (Rule Object Logic Language). The key to the development of an integrated system has been the central role of the data model which was developed and formalized first and from which both the imperative and logic languages have been derived. The two-language approach has allowed the logic language to remain free from extra-logical features required to support updates and input/output by supplying the imperative language for that task. The integration of the imperative and logic languages is free from impedance mismatches, as both languages share a common type system - the underlying data model - and compatible execution strategies - ROLL being callable from ROCK and vice-versa. The system has been implemented to run on Sun4 workstations using the Exodus E Persistent C++ compiler. An non-persistent (in-memory) version of the system is available on both Sun4 workstations and PCs running DOS/Windows. The implementation provides facilities for declaring object-oriented schemas and defining both imperative (ROCK) and deductive (ROLL) methods. It also provides for the execution of ROCK programs and evaluation of ROLL queries. A ROLL compiler and a query optimizer are included. The non-persistent version of ROCK & ROLL is available via anonymous ftp from server ftp.cee.hw.ac.uk (137.195.26.109) directory /pub/rnr files rnr.zip - PC/DOS release rnr.tar.gz - Sun4/SunOS4.1.3 release (or compatible e.g. Solaris 5.3) README - details of release and installation process pkunxip.exe - PC/DOS binary to unzip PC release zcat.exe - Unix/Sun4 binary to unzip Sun4 release Each release version includes the ROCK & ROLL executable, a User Manual (postscript only), some example ROCK & ROLL programs and published papers describing the definition and implementation of ROCK & ROLL. (Tony) Wasserman will be the first recipient of the Stevens Award and will present the inaugural Stevens Lecture on Software Development Methods. The lecture, titled "Methods, Tools, and the Software Development Process", will be given on Wednesday evening, July 12, 1995 at the Toronto Hilton in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the 7th International Workshop on CASE (CASE'95) conference. "Tony has made two decade's worth of contributions to software development methods as an author, lecturer, professor, and entrepreneur," says Peter A. Freeman, Dean of the College of Computing and Chief Information Officer at Georgia Institute of Technology. "More than almost anyone else, he has successfully bridged the research community and the commercial world." The Stevens Award has been created to recognize outstanding contributions to the literature or practice of methods for software development. The lecture presentations will focus on advancing or analyzing the state of software methods and their direction for the future. This award lecture is named in memory of Wayne Stevens (1944-1993), a highly-respected consultant, author, pioneer, and advocate of the practical application of software methods and tools. His 1974 IBM Systems Journal article "Structured Design" was the first published on the topic and has been widely reprinted. Stevens was the author of the books Software Design: Concepts and Methods (Prentice-Hall Intl, 1991) and Using Structured Design (Wiley, 1981). His last article "Data Flow Analysis and Design" appears in the Encyclopedia of Software Engineering (Wiley, 1994). Stevens was the chief architect of application development methodology for IBM's consulting group. Tony Wasserman, the first Stevens Award lecturer, has been a pioneer in software development environments. He is founder and chairman of Interactive Development Environments (IDE), maker of the Software through Pictures integrated CASE environment. As a professor at the University of California (1971-1986), he developed the User Software Engineering method and supporting tools for rapid application development. He was instrumental in the development of methods to support the design of systems to be built in the Ada language, including the 1982 "Methodman" report. He is the author of 8 books and 30 articles on software engineering and software development tools. Wasserman was the first chairman (1976-79) of the Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSoft) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and was editor-in-chief (1983-86) of the ACM Computing Surveys journal. His latest work is on architectures, development processes, and tools for object-oriented systems. The Stevens Award and lecture is presented by IWCASE, the international sponsoring association of the CASE workshop - the principal technical meeting of the computer-aided software and systems engineering field. CASE'95 is co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) and is in cooperation with ACM SIGSoft. ### International Workshop on CASE Inc. / IWCASE P.O. Brno October 8-10, 1995 The DATASEM seminar was initiated in 1981. In presented application and lectures it gave the review of both theoretical and practical results in the field of database systems and related problems - expert systems, information management etc. From the very beginning the seminars aimed most of all at database structures design and information systems analysis with the emphasis being put on both fundamental and applied research. In the following years DATASEM was increasingly focused on the problems of practice. Since 1994, thanks to its extent and the number of participants, the seminar has been changed to the prominent conference. The late times show users' insufficient preparedness to accept new software technology. Helping to improve the theoretical knowledge is one of the goals of the DATASEM conference. Besides the traditional presentation of the latest progress in database systems field and trends in the related topics, this year DATASEM '95 is concentrating on the high expert and theoretical level of the papers. We're expecting contributions looking in the theoretical background of commercial products, comparative studies and methodological generalization of the present trends. This should be achieved by offering "invited" lectures which can enable to give a deeper view on the problem both on the conference as in the conference proceedings. Keller (Stanford University) Rick Cattell (Sun Microsystems) David Maier (Oregon Graduate Institute) A Practical Week-long Course for Consultants, Educators, Government and Industry Scientists and Engineers This course is taught by three leading researchers in the area of object data management: Arthur M. Keller, Rick Cattell, and David Maier. Participants will receive a grounding in object database fundamentals, familiarity with current commercial systems and advanced prototypes, and exposure to the most important research and development trends in the area. The course begins with the motivations for object databases, along with object-oriented terminology and a review of database concepts. It then covers the definition of an object-oriented database, and presents several example systems. That is followed by more detail on the dimensions in which object-oriented database systems vary, based on a reference model for object database systems. We then consider future trends. The focus then shifts to architectural and implementation issues, including performance issues. Four vendors will describe their architecture and systems. We then discuss migration to object technology. The course concludes with a discussion of object database standards and a panel session. Participants will receive a complete set of course notes and readings as well as the text Object_Data_Management by Rick Cattell. PREREQUISITES: Some elementary knowledge of databases and object-oriented programming is useful for this course. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course is appropriate for database developers, technical managers and computer researchers who want to gain insight into the capabilities, implementation and current trends in this emerging technology.
