This presentation will provide: a state-of-the-art taxonomy of federated database systems; a state-of-the-art survey of various aspects of FDBS, a discussion of various problems and existing, as well as emerging, solutions; a bibliography of the state-of-the-art practice; and, a discussion of the emerging directions. Tuesday July 18, 1995 8 - 11 a.m. William Perrizo "Distributed Databases: Client-Server -- Beyond" Distributed database systems are the wave of the future in information storage and processing. This presentation will delve into distributed database management concepts, architectures, and principles, from the current rage, namely client-server systems, to a look into the future, including fully transparent distributed system and interoperable multibases. It will lay out the landscape for those whose lives and jobs depend on the right decisions for data management. 11 a.m. - Noon Lunch Noon - 3 p.m. Yannis Ioannidis "Intelligent Databases" This presentation investigates the common ground, similarities, and differences that exist between the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Databases. It specifically focuses on: deductive and active databases; intelligent user interfaces; cooperative answering; intelligent query processing/optimization; and knowledege representation and semantic modeling. Each topic discussion will include the desired functionality and the problems of conventional database technology in offering it, relevant solutions and actual systems, and problems that are still open with pointers to relevant literature. 3 - 3:30 p.m. Break 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Byung Lee "Object-Oriented Databases" Object-oriented databases (OODBs) are leaping beyond their infancy and moving toward the "fourth generation" database technology that can complement or replace relational databases in various applications. This presentation will review how OODB technology has evolved, where it stands now, where it is heading, and where it should be heading. Topics will include comparing different OODB management system architectures, reviewing on-going standardization efforts, and addressing the prospects of different OODB technologies. ------------- Bibliography of Presenters Dr. Nabil Adam is a professor of Computers and Information Systems, chair of the MS/CIS department at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and chair of the Center for Information Management, Integration and Connectivity. He has coedited six books including Digital Libraries: Current Issues and Advanced Database Systems as well as special issues of CACM, Operations Research, and the Journal of Management Information Systems. Dr. Yannis Ioannidis is Associate Professor in the Computer Sciences department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has written over 35 articles for leading journals and conferences, and is co-author of a pending patent. Ioannidis received an NSF Presidential Young Investigator (PYI) award for 1991-96. He is Associate Editor of Information Systems and the International Journal of Intelligent Information Systems and has served on the board of IEEE Data Engineering, 1990-93. Dr. Byung Lee is Assistant Professor in Graduate Programs in Software at the University of St. Thomas. He is doing research in the database field, specifically object-oriented software and distributed computing. Byung has been a supervisor at Datacom Global Communications and a technical staff member at Bell Communications Research, both in New Jersey. Dr. William Perrizo is Professor of Computer Science at North Dakota State University. He has been a Faculty Research Scientist for the NSF-EPSCoR-ASCEND Intelligent Systems Cluster as well as Director of the Math and Computer Modelling Component of this Cluster. Perrizo was a research scientist for IBM and the Air Force ESD. Dr. Amit Sheth is an Associate Professor of Computer Sciences and directs the Large Scale Distributed Information Systems (LSDIS) Lab at the University of Georgia. The LSDIS lab maintains an active collaboration with industry, and has won significant projects. Sheth has published over 70 papers, given over 60 talks/tutorials, led two international conferences and a workshop as general/program co-chair, and is on the editorial board of four journals. Dr. Jaideep Srivastava is an Associate Professor of the Computer Science department at the University of Minnesota. He was a research engineer with Uptron Digital Systems in India. Srivastava has published over 75 papers in refereed journals and conferences, as well as given invited talks. In the 1990's, databases are a critical technology for dealing with complex and interdependent information. Our society can benefit greatly from the development of database technology, and we hope that the collaboration that will result from the joint conference will play a key role in stimulating this process. We encourage you to participate in this important event. The SIGMOD and PODS conferences will overlap for two days to form a joint conference, but each will have a separate third day without overlap. There will be only one registration process for the joint, four-day conference. SIGMOD and PODS will have separate program committees and will have separate proceedings. Authors must submit their papers to the conference that they feel is most appropriate for their work. We recommend that applied papers be submitted to SIGMOD and theoretical ones to PODS. The database research and development view is often different from the view of those who use DBMSs to build the world's information systems. The SIGMOD '96 Industrial Program will introduce some innovations to enhance communication between the community that deploys database technology and the community that produces it. Non-database industry leaders will present their views on current practices, challenges, and requirements in terms of what users want from database technology. This technology-pull view will be complemented by a technology-push view with database technology leaders presenting their vision for the capabilities of the next generation database technology. A significant addition to the industrial program is that we are picking up on an existing local biennial professional symposium, which we will include as a special "Industry Day" in SIGMOD/PODS '96.
