  OOPSLA'95 Workshop on Object Database Behavior, Benchmarks, and Performance

		  Austin, Texas---Sunday, October 15, 1995

Objectives:

Object database performance research requires an understanding of how
real OODBMS applications behave.  Such information is invaluable in
building more efficient object database systems.  In this workshop, we
will discuss characterizations of object database behavior in the form
of measurements and benchmarks.  Topics relevant to the workshop
include, but are not limited to:

---  Empirical and/or analytic models of OODBMS performance
---  Performance metrics for object databases 
---  Object database benchmarks 
---  Relationship between relational and OODBMS benchmarks
---  Object database tracing and profiling
---  Trace-driven simulation and performance evaluation of object databases
---  Classification and/or characterization of object database application
	areas
---  Performance tradeoffs of workstation/server OODB architectures
---  Experience papers describing the static and/or time-varying structure
	of object database applications
---  Performance requirements in various application domains.


Goals and Focus:

The goal of this workshop is to develop a stronger understanding of
the issues related to object database behavior characterization and
performance evaluation based on that characterization.  Because
understanding the behavior of actual object database applications is
critical to achieving our goals, we strongly encourage database users
to participate.  By bringing together a community interested in these
issues, our hope is that better measurements, better benchmarks, and
ultimately better performance characterizations will be developed.

To this end, we are strongly encouraging diverse participation from
anyone with interest in object database performance and/or performance
characterization, including OODBMS vendors, OODBMS users, and
academics researching the performance of object databases.


Requirements for attendance:

Attendance will be by invitation only.  Based on position papers
received, we will organize sessions on related topics.  Interested
parties should submit a 2 to 5 page position paper and indicate
whether they desire to make a presentation, and if so, whether they
prefer to make a short (10 minute) or long (20 minute) presentation.
We will make final versions of position papers of attendees available
to the other attendees and publicly on the Internet.  We would like to
limit attendance to about 40 persons and we reserve the right to limit
the number of authors attending in conjunction with each invitation.

To participate, please submit 6 copies of your position paper by August
15, 1995.  You should be notified of acceptance by September 1, 1995.

The notion of constraints -- the relationships among objects and the
limitations they impose on one another -- is a natural framework for
modelling and problem-solving.  Thus it is not surprising that
constraint-based problem representations have evolved into generalized
methods of problem-solving, as exemplified in constraint logic
programming (CLP), constraint databases (CDB's), and
constraint-intensive queries (CIQ's).

  CLP is a powerful and expressive programming paradigm, combining the
ability to manipulate partial information using constraints, the
elegance of executable specifications inherent in logic programming,
and the incorporation of search heuristics and efficient constraint
solvers in specialized domains.  CDB's are useful for storing and
efficiently querying large numbers of constraints representing, for
example, complex modelling requirements as well as spatial and
temporal data.  CIQ's are important in applications such as decision
support, in which constraints are used to create views on data and to
facilitate query optimization.  The purpose of this workshop is to
advance the state of the art in CLP, CDB's and CIQ's, and to discuss
the interplay among these areas.

  Topics include (but are not restricted to) the following: 

  * Applications of CLP, CDB's and CIQ's
  * Using constraint languages for modelling and knowledge representation
  * Execution strategies for CLP (e.g. abstract machines, memoing
    techniques)
  * Global optimization/query optimization for CLP, CDB's and CIQ's
  * New constraint domains (especially those useful for databases or 
    knowledge representation)
  * Constraint solving algorithms
  * Object databases and constraints
  * Storing and accessing large constraint sets
  * Spatial and temporal databases and constraints
  * Implementation and evaluation of constraint systems

Authors are invited to submit papers written in English and not
exceeding 15 pages (5000 words) to the contact address listed below.
We encourage authors to submit by electronic mail in self-contained
Postscript or LaTeX/TeX format.  Alternatively six paper copies may be
submitted.  Submissions should contain return mail and email
addresses.  We encourage prospective authors to first send an

		SYMPOSIUM ON MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS
			to appear in 
		    ACM Computing Surveys



We invite you to submit a 1000-word article illuminating some technical 
aspect of multimedia systems to ACM Computing Surveys for possible
publication in a Symposium issue (December 1995 likely). Contributed 
articles will be quickly reviewed.

This symposium forms part of a new initiative to broaden the scope and
vary the format of Computing Surveys.  The goal of the symposium on
multimedia systems is to provide a substantive overview of the technical 
scope of and research directions in multimedia systems and applications 
by means of provocative position statements or descriptions of technical 
research areas by leading researchers.

The first symposium, appearing in the March 1995 issue and containing
short 12 articles, centers on issues of computational complexity and
the nature of computer science raised by the Hartmanis 1994 Turing
lecture. The second symposium, focuses on select areas of Artificial
Intelligence, will appear in September 1995 issue.


The following questions illustrate the kinds of issues with which
articles in multimedia systems symposium might deal:



o How have multimedia systems evolved in the last few years? What are the
  leading research issues?

o Multimedia technology has been perceived as hardware and applications driven
  technology. Is there a conceptual core, a set of fundamental components, and 
  theory underlying the core and components?

o How will the advances in high performance computing and communications
  affect multimedia systems and applications?

o What data compression schemes are relevant for multimedia
  applications?

o What are the issues involved in multimedia storage servers?

o What challenges face work on networked multimedia systems?

o What role does multimedia database systems play in developing
  multimedia systems and applications?

o Where do we stand in data models, query languages/interfaces, and
  system architectures for multimedia database systems?

o What are the leading problems and paradigms for multimedia interface
  design?

o What is the status of research on teleconferencing and computer
  supported collaborative environments?

o What are the technical challenges in developing interactive multimedia
  applications?

o How can semantic content of multimedia data be extracted automatically?
  semi-automatically?

o How can multimedia information retrieval systems deal with subjectivity in
  the interpretation of multimedia data by the system users?

o What are the issues in distributed multimedia information retrieval?

o Can hypermedia instructional technologies help people learn faster
  and more effectively?

o What are the learning theories and design paradigms for 
  multimedia/hypermedia instructional authoring and presentation?

o What role does Artificial Intelligence (AI) play in developing
  ``intelligent" multimedia systems?

o How will future multimedia systems affect our work, home, and 
  the society?


The above questions are merely illustrative.  We hope that you respond
to our invitation by picking an area of personal interest and writing
a substantive, provocative, and informative 1000-word article.

Chair in Real-Time Systems: Further particulars


1.	Introduction

The primary focus of the Department of Computation lies in the specification,
design, analysis and modelling of complex information processing systems. The
term information processing systems is used in its widest sense to include
the design of VLSI circuits, software, decision support systems, information
and data base systems, embedded computer systems and so on. The more formal
aspects of computer science, which provide the mathematical foundations for
the discipline are also considered as the essential basis upon which the
development of complex information processing systems is taught and
researched.

The Department of Computation is seeking to appoint a Professor of Real-Time
Systems to complement its existing strengths in the key area of "Systems
Engineering". The holder of this established chair will be expected to
promote research in at least one of the following areas of real-time systems:
specification; design; validation and verification; implementation. The
following fields are of particular interest to the Department:
hardware/software codesign of embedded systems; novel architectures for high
performance computing; formal approaches to concurrency, reliability and
correctness; specialised techniques for real-time applications; distributed
and networked systems.

The Department of Computation currently has 32 academic staff comprising 4
established Chairs, 9 Senior Lecturers and 19 Lecturers. To sustain its
teaching and research activities the Department has 16 Computer Officers. The
quality and depth of research was recognised by a 4A rating in the last
Research Assessment Exercise. It is widely believed in the Department that
the quality of its research together with the enthusiasm and dedication of
its staff provide an excellent basis for further successes and it remains a
high priority within the Department to achieve a 5 rating in the forthcoming
Research Assessment Exercise.

 2.	Research

The research activities within the Department of Computation concern the
application of an engineering discipline to the construction of complex
hardware and software systems for large scale applications. The academic
staff are organised into five active Research Groups, each associated with an
established chair: 

	o	Computer Systems Engineering

	o	Information Engineering

	o	Information Systems

	o	Medical Informatics

	o	Software Engineering 

With the increasing size and expansion of activity within the Information
Systems Group, an Information Systems Management  sub-group has recently been
established which concentrates on the management of information systems
development, whilst the Information Systems Group concentrates on the
engineering aspects of system development.

The new Professor will be expected to lead the Computer Systems Engineering
Group (which may be suitably renamed). At the present time, the group
contains six academic staff whose main research interests are:
hardware/software cosynthesis; neural network applications and support;
concurrency modelling; image recognition techniques; parallel processing
architectures. Research support has been provided by the EC, EPSRC, and
industry. There are currently 8 PhD students working in these areas.

Where appropriate the new Professor would need to forge links with other
Research Groups both within and outside the Department. In particular,
members of the Software Engineering Group also undertake research and
teaching in the area of real-time systems, and colleagues in the Department
of Electrical Engineering and Electronics are active in the related areas of
digital systems, digital  communications, signal processing, and
microelectronic circuit design.

 3.	Teaching

3.1	Undergraduate Courses

The Department presently offers two largely independent families of
undergraduate courses. Co-ordination of academic content of courses,
timetabling, examination procedures etc. is carried out by the Departmental
Curriculum Committee, which is also responsible for overseeing course
accreditation by the British Computer Society and the Institution of
Electrical Engineers.   Boards of Studies are responsible for the day-to-day
operation of courses. The current course portfolio consists of:

Computation

	B.Sc. Computation 
	B.Sc. Information Engineering
	B.Sc. Pure Mathematics and Computation 
	B.Sc. Linguistics and Computation
	B.Sc. Computation and Modern Languages

Systems Engineering

	B.Eng./M.Eng. Microelectronic Systems Engineering

	B.Eng./M.Eng. Electronic Systems Engineering

The new Professor would be expected to play a leading role in the future
development of the Systems Engineering family of courses which are run
jointly with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics. These
courses are composed of different mixtures of hardware and software topics -
the precise blend is dependent on the actual degree course.

3.2	Postgraduate Courses

The Department offers four M.Sc. taught courses:

o	M.Sc. in Computation 
o	M.Sc. in Information System Engineering
o	M.Sc. in Software Engineering
o	M.Sc. in Information Engineering

The M.Sc. course in Computation is a conversion course which receives EPSRC
support for 20 students at present. 

The M.Sc. courses in Information System Engineering, Software Engineering,
and Information Engineering, represent specialist courses in Computing. At
present the Department recruits students to the Information System
Engineering course only. The Department is currently planning to pilot an
external degree in Singapore commencing in September 1995, based upon the
M.Sc. in Information System Engineering. The Department also contributes to
the MSc course in VLSI Systems Engineering run by the Department of
Electrical Engineering and Electronics.

Aims and Scope

Organized at a regular two-year interval, the IPMU 
International Conference deals with the difficulties 
existing in the acquisition, representation, management 
and transmission of data in knowledge-based and 
decision-making systems. It brings together researches 
working on various methodologies for the management of 
uncertain information and provides a useful exchange 
between theorists and practitioners using these different
methodologies.

Submission Information
--------------------------------------------------------

Authors should submit three copies of each full paper
by November 1st. There will be a six page (two columns)
limit on the final versions of accepted papers. Papers 
will be carefully reviewed and authors will be notified
on the acceptance/rejection by February 1st, 1996.
Final camera-ready copies for publication will required
by April 1st, 1996. Submissions may be sent by mail to
the address included in this call. Electronic submissions 
are encouraged. To submit a paper electronically, send an
e-mail to

including the following information (in this order):
  a) Paper title (plain text)
  b) Author's names, including professional status.
  c) Surface mail and e-mail address for a contact author

Proceedings will be available at the opening of the 
Conference. Relevant papers may be selected for publication
in special issues of leading international journals.

In recent years computer processing of  Earth  observations  through 
geographic  information  systems  has  attracted  a  great  deal  of 
attention from the industrial and  research  world.  The  Third  ACM 
International Workshop on Advances in Geographic Information Systems 
will provide an  effective  forum  for  disseminating  original  and 
fundamental research and experience in the rapidly advancing area of 
the use of computer science for spatial studies.

Since the workshop will be  held  in  conjunction  with  the  Fourth 
International Conference on Information  and  Knowledge  Management, 
(CIKM'95),  participants will be able to maximize their  interchange 
of experiences  and  knowledge  among  researchers  and  practioners 
across the entire field of knowledge and information management.

ACM-GIS'95 will bring together leading  researchers  and  developers 
and will strive toward setting future research  directions  in  this 
area.  The primary focus of the workshop  is  on  new  and  original 
research results in the  areas  of  theorical  foundations,  design, 
implementation and applications of GIS as well as experience reports 
from application specialists. The goal is to exchange research ideas 
and results among participants.

Papers submission:
------------------

Authors  are  invited  to  submit  complete  and  original  research 
contributions or experience reports;  submissions should be  written 
in english and should include:
     - Title
     - Author(s) informations  (Name, Affiliation, Postal address
                                E-mail address, Phone/Fax numbers)
     - Topic(s)
     - Abstract (up to 200 words)
     - Text (double-spaced and no longer than 5 000 words)
     - References

In case of  multiple  authors,  an indication  of  which  author  is 
responsible for correspondence and preparing the camera ready  paper 
for the proceedings  should  also  be  included.  Submitters  should 
indicate in a cover letter their willingness to attend the  workshop 
and present their paper.

All submitted papers will be refereed by at least five reviewers for 
quality,  correctness,  originality and relevance.  Accepted  papers 
will be  published  in  the  ACM-GIS'95  proceedings.  We  encourage 
submissions from both academic and industrial spheres.

Proposals for panels that examine emerging, innovative, or otherwise 
provocative geographic information issues are  encouraged  as  well. 
Panel proposals should include a summary of the topic and the  names 
and affiliations of the panelists who  have  made  a  commitment  to 
participate.

Seven copies of the manuscript should be submitted by August 4, 1995
