Expected starting date is February 1, 1995. The position is for one year, with a possibility for a second year, subject to funding availability. Applicants should have a Ph.D in computer science or a related discipline. The successful candidate will carry out research on multimedia document development, in an interdisciplinary team that spans the departments of computer science and industrial engineering at the University of Toronto, and the IBM Toronto Laboratory. This team is currently working on integrating text and video browsing with visualization tools and internet access to create more effective methods for developing large multimedia documents. The research is being carried out in a friendly but challenging environment with state of the art tools. Publication of research results will be encouraged. Distributed and parallel databases play two central roles in this new arena, one as essential components of the infrastructure required to support mobile users, and another as the repositories of the key applications of interest to a wide variety of users. In the first role, databases support the functions required for locating, authenticating, billing and providing administrative services to mobile users. In the second role, mobile access to databases, where the databases are fully or partially distributed across fixed and/or mobile sites, is an important emerging area, e.g. for applications such as mobile sales, personalized information services, and factory operations. There remain interesting database challenges, however, before the requirements and constraints imposed by mobile computing can be fully met. The research community has begun addressing these issues recently at several workshops and conferences. The Working Conference on Reverse Engineering (WCRE) is a research-oriented conference addressed solely to the theory and technology of recovering information from existing software and systems. Our purpose is to explore innovative methods of extracting the many kinds of information that can be recovered from software and systems artifacts, and to examine innovative methods of using this information. WCRE is a "working" conference, emphasizing focused discussion interspersed with paper presentations. WCRE is held every two years, alternating with the Reengineering Forum conference (an industrial applications meeting) and complementing the Intl Conf on Software Maintenance. Contributions on topics like renovation of information systems, software re-engineering, reuse, restructuring and experience-based forward engineering are welcome. This year reports dealing with quality issue in software development process are particularly encouraged. A ReTIS conferences have their roots in the local CASE tool users conference in 1991 and in the International Conferences on Re-engineering Re'93 and Re'94. Speakers came mostly from Slovenia and Austria but there was also a significant appearance of researchers from Germany and the United States. Our ambition is to bring together participants from (but not limited to) all the regions of Alps-Adria. The conference issues will be treated in several forms: - Keynote speeches by outstanding researchers and practitioners - Open forum and scientific sessions - Industry report session (a one day tool fair is expected) Contributions ============= Contributions will be classified in two groups: full scientific papers (selection on the basis of extended summaries on recent applications, developments and research associated with the scope of the conference) and industry reports (summaries of applications of re- technologies, case studies, lessons learned). Authors are invited to submit a two page abstract for full papers and a one page abstract for industrial reports. All accepted contributions must be presented at the conference by the author or one of the co-authors. Language The official language of the conference is English. One or two parallel sessions in Slovene language are under consideration.
