Despite the current existence of some forms of Multi-Media Systems, the true realization of MMIP rests on the ability to access and manipulate the multi-media objects. That can only be adequately addressed and achieved via Multi-Media Data Base Management Systems (MMDBMSs). For conventional text-based information, data access and manipulation have advanced considerably; however, for multi-media systems that incorporate continuous media objects, e.g., audio and video, and other media types like images, voice, and graphics, they pose novel problems. This workshop, which is intended to become an annual event, is a follow-up to the highly successful multi-media workshop held in conjunction with the ACM Annual Multi-Media Conference in San Francisco, California, in October 1994. The workshop will also feature two internationally reputable guest speakers. The workshop will emphasize on the issues relevant to designing, developing, and utilizing MMDBMSs especially the areas listed below. When deemed necessary and sufficient by an author, a paper may be an extended summary. This emerging new technology concerns the classificatory analysis of imprecise, uncertain or incomplete information. Database mining can be defined as the process of mining for implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from very large databases by efficient knowledge discovery techniques. It is one of the most promising research topics in the fields of database systems and machine learning. In the past few years, it has been demonstrated that rough set theory is a very effective methodology for data analysis in the attribute-value based domains. Initial work will involve designing and implementing concurrency- control mechanisms for frame knowledge representation systems to provide them with multiuser access capabilities. Future projects are likely to include work on the interoperation of heterogeneous knowledge bases and databases. Our group is researching and developing novel information management tools for the field of bioinformatics by combining ideas from artificial intelligence and from database systems. Prospective candidates should have a background in several of the following areas: database concurrency control (particularly for long transactions in object-oriented databases), knowledge representation systems, interoperation and federation of heterogeneous databases, artificial intelligence in general, Common Lisp programming, the Oracle DBMS, scientific databases (particularly molecular-biology databases).
