Temporal requests (i.e., ChronoLog-commands) are compiled into (sequences) of SQL-commands that are executed by the commercial database backend. Special care was given to the design of a user-friendly data manipulation language that supports temporal counterparts of all relational algebra operators. Furthermore, ChronoLog features - ChronoLog, a logic-based data manipulation language - facts, rules, and integrity constraints - three time dimensions: valid time (vt), user-defined time (udt), and transaction time (tt) - temporal join, temporal negation, temporal disjunction, temporal selection, and temporal projection - enforcement of coalesced (i.e., maximal) valid-time intervals - a temporally complete query language - temporal update operations - historical operations - ChronoSQL, a SQL-based temporal query language - a terminal interface - a graphical interface (Tcl, Tk, and Tcl-DP based) - full DBMS functionality (all data-related computations are performed by Oracle) 2) SQL main memory interpreter ------------------------------ Because not everybody may have Oracle at hand, this release comes with a SQL main memory interpreter that can be used to emulate Oracle (therefore it is called 'Oracle emulator'). To meet the raised expectations of users of these tools, we have developed = Visual Information Seeking principles (VIS) to support fact-finding and = browsing by novices and experts. We begin with an overview, and then allow = users to filter out unwanted data, zoom in on relevant items, and then get = details-on-demand. The interface components are tightly coupled to give = users appropriate feedback, facilitate query refinement, and prevent = errors. This course will cover basic issues of user interface design, usability testing, user interface management systems, and the guidelines process for ensuring high quality user interfaces for data presentation and browsing. Examples will be drawn from dynamic query methods with continuous visual presentation of results as the query is changed (using sliders, buttons, maps), color-coded 2-D space-filling treemaps to show hierarchies in a single display (hundreds of directories and more than 3000 files can be seen at once), and the starfield display (a zoom-able 2-D display with thousands of selectable points of light). Empirical data from usability studies and controlled experiments will be presented. Applications are drawn from medical data on cancer rates, real estate brokerage information on finding a home, stock market portfolios, film libraries, and hierarchical directories on computers, but the methods generalize to many hierarchical, relational, and multi-dimensional information spaces. User control over the display and rapid feedback offer videogame-like interaction that is highly engaging. The speaker Ben Shneiderman is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Head of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, and Member of the Institute for Systems Research, all at the University of Maryland at College Park. He has taught previously at the State University of New York and at Indiana University. He regularly teaches popular short courses and organizes an annual satellite television presentation on "User Interface Strategies" seen by thousands of professionals since 1987. Dr. Shneiderman is the author of Software Psychology: Human Factors in Computer and Information Systems (1980) and Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction (1987, second edition 1992), Addison-Wesley Publishers, Reading, MA. His 1989 book, co-authored with Greg Kearsley, Hypertext Hands-On!, contains a hypertext version on two disks. He is the originator of the Hyperties hypermedia system, now produced by Cognetics Corp., Princeton Junction, NJ. In addition he has co-authored two textbooks, edited three technical books, published more than 160 technical papers and book chapters. His 1993 edited book Sparks of Innovation in Human-Computer Interaction collects 25 papers from the past 10 years of research at the University of Maryland. Ben Shneiderman has been on the Editorial Advisory Boards of nine journals including the newly formed ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction and the ACM Interactions. We encourage the submission of papers that reflect important trends, products, and applications experience. These papers will be evaluated on their significance to and impact on indus- try. Papers intended for this track should be clearly marked as such, and should be submitted directly to one of the co-Chairs of the Indus- try Track Subcommittee. The Program Chairs may, at their discretion, exchange papers that are deemed more appropriate to the other track.
