Data mining has attracted people from many different fields, including database systems, knowledge-base systems, machine learning, knowledge acquisition, statistics, information retrieval, and data visualization. The past conferences and workshops dedicated to knowledge discovery in databases are associated with AI conferences (e.g., IJCAI, AAAI, and Machine Learning). It is important to have such a forum associated with database conferences as well to examine mining issues particularly related to database systems. The objective of this workshop is to bring researchers in database systems together to discuss and examine the issues related to mining knowledge from databases. FORMAT The workshop will be held one day before the SIGMOD/PODS'96 conference. The plan is to have a full-day workshop, consisting of 3 theme sessions and one panel session. The three theme sessions will be on three major issues: Foundations, Implementations, and Applications respectively. Each theme session includes one overview talk, 5-6 position presentations (including a short discussion after each position presentation). If the number of submissions is large, we will consider arranging a poster session and a system demonstration session in parallel with it. The workshop will also be coordinated with KDD'96 conference (http://www-aig.jpl.nasa.gov/kdd96) (Portland, Oregon, August 1996). TOPICS The topics of the discussion will be partitioned into 3 major themes. 1. The first conference was held in May 1991 and proved to be a big international event. Andrei Ershov was one of the early Russian pioneers in the field of theoretical and systems programming, a founder of the Siberian School of Computer Science. In 1974 he was nominated as a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society. In 1981 he received the Silver Core Award for services rendered to IFIP. Andrei Ershov's brilliant speeches were always in the focus of public attention. Especially notable was his lecture on "Aesthetic and human factor in programming" presented at AFIPS Spring Joint Computer Conference in 1972. Andrei Ershov was not only an extremely gifted scientist, teacher and fighter for his ideas, but also a bright and many-sided personality. He wrote poetry, translated the works of R.Kipling and other English poets, and enjoyed playing guitar and singing. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Andrei Ershov and working with him will always remember his great vision, eminent achievements, and generous friendship. The aim of the Conference is to provide a forum for the presentation and in-depth discussion of advanced research directions in Computer Science. For a developing science, it is important to work out consolidating ideas, concepts and models. Movement in this direction is one of the goals the Conference is to meet. Improvement of the contacts and exchange of ideas between researchers from the East and West is another goal. CONFERENCE TOPICS Conference topics include: 1. Its airport is located at Dabolim, which is about 30 km from Goa's capital, Panjim. A flight from Bombay to Goa takes about 45 minutes. This conference will be the first in a series that addresses "integration issues" of enterprises in the context of their increasingly distributed business and operational processes. More specifically, the series addresses issues of "information integration" (creation of new, value-added information out of existing information), "process integration" (reorganization of structural relationships among enterprise process entities for enhanced performance), and synergy between information integration and process integration. The conference series is intended to provide a forum to promote communications among researchers and practitioners of information systems, management, and related disciplines on issues of information and process integration. The focus of the '96 meeting is on the role of documents in process integration, i.e., how documents and information contained in documents can be most effectively utilized in analysis, design, and implementation of processes for enhanced integration. There is an emerging notion of "document information" in the industry that is considered to be a key class of information for enabling process integration. It represents a large class of corporate information (typically over 70%), and is characterized by its strong process orientation and high business values. Yet, unlike relational data that the industry has learned to manage well, document information is typically left outside the discipline of database management due to its complexity in structure and lifecycle. This situation, however, is changing thanks to emerging network middleware technology and related document services such as document database management, document flow management, and document information interchange (via standards such as HTML and more generally SGML). It is, therefore, particularly timely to consider the role of documents in process integration and attempt to harness the business value of document information.
