Although Jim had been ill for several weeks, this was entirely unexpected and comes as a terrible shock to all of us at NYU. Jim Clifford made his mark in several walks of life. As a researcher, he was very active in the database field where he made fundamental contributions to temporal database theory, and more recently, to the area of knowledge discovery from databases. He was active professionally in the VLDB and SIGMOD communities, and was recently appointed as an editor of TODS. A natural leader, Jim was Director of the M.S. in Information Systems Program - a joint program between NYU's Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Systems at NYU's Stern School of Business. He was recently honored by a joint appointment in the Computer Science Department and the Stern School of Business in recognition of his contributions to both academic fields. Above all, Jim was respected and loved by everyone whose lives he touched. We will all miss him dearly.
