OOPSLA Workshop on Metamodeling in OO
Sunday, October 15th, 1995

 OVERVIEW:
Object-oriented structural modeling uses CLASSES to represent the
structure of similar application objects, and ASSOCIATIONS to
represent patterns of connections between application objects. Applications
where the REPRESENTATION of objects needs to be queried or otherwise
manipulated need to EXPLICITLY REPRESENT THE REPRESENTATION of
objects; we call the representation of the representation of application
objects METAMODELING.  Some methodologies recognize the existence of
meta-level information and the need for representing it (see e.g. OMT).
However, it is not handled in a systematic way, and the relationship
between models and meta-models isn't clearly defined. In the OO programming
language camp, interest in meta-modeling focused on reflection from a
language semantics and design point of view.  There has been a recent cry
in the OO community for multi-paradigm representation of domain knowledge,
with the realization that there are business rules that cannot be easily
expressed within the object notation (see e.g. [Hoydalsvik et al., 1993]
and the 1994 OOPSLA workshop on AI and OO); we believe that meta-modeling
can go a long way towards expressing domain rules and constraints.

 GOALS AND FOCUS:
The purpose of this workshop is to explore metamodeling concepts
in the context of object-oriented software development, with an emphasis
towards:
1. Exploring the additional modeling constructs that are needed-- if any-- to
   model information at several levels of abstraction,
2. Exploring changes to modeling procedures/heuristics that are needed-- if
   any-- to build object meta-models and integrating them with object models,
3. Exploring the effects of such changes on design and implementation (e.g.
   reflective languages, metaprogramming, etc).
The desired outcome of the workshop is: 1) a recognition of the need for
metamodeling as a way of representing business rules, and a clear
definition of its scope, 2) a cross-fertilization of formal and
heuristic/informal approaches towards addressing the most pressing issues,
and 3) an outline of open practical and theoretical questions that 
participants feel would advance the theory and practice of metamodeling.

 REQUIREMENTS FOR ATTENDANCE:
Participants are requested to submit 2 to 4 page position papers (1000 -
2000 words) that report on either: 1) theoretical work addressing
metamodeling issues, or 2) experience reports on modeling efforts that
highlight the need for a metamodeling discipline, or that report on the use
of one. Position papers are due by August 15th, 1995. Acceptance
notifications will be sent by September 1rst. A representative subset of
accepted contributions will be scheduled for presentation during the workshop.

The International Conference on Very Large Data Bases is one of the
most renowned conferences in the database field, with two decades of
succesful history.

The VLDB `95 program committee has prepared a very exciting program
offering interesting topics for most people working in the field of
databases. VLDB '95 will provide a forum for discussion and exchange of
ideas among both researchers and practitioners. In addition to the
high-quality scientific program, tutorials on challenging developments
in databases will be held by leading personalities. Moreover, several
industrial sessions will take place during VLDB `95, identifying

Panels will be held, each letting experts discuss urgent questions in
current database technology. Finally, invited talks will be given by
leading persons in the field illuminating recent trends.

The VLDB Endowment as well as the local organizers are looking forward

VLDB `95 will take place in Zurich, Switzerland. The conference will be
held on the campus of the University of Zurich-Irchel, which is easily
reachable from the city and the main station.

Zurich is a city with only about 400'000 inhabitants, it has however an
international flair, and provides everything one might expect from a
major capital. It is the financial heart of Switzerland, and an
important artistic, cultural, educational, and industrial center.

The city is located by the picturesque Lake Zurich, and in September
has a mild climate. Downtown Zurich is worthwile visiting, with its
medieval historic center and many touristic attractions. The
world-famous swiss Alps as well as most other scenic places in
Switzerland are easy to reach either by train or by car.

Zurich's airport is a major international hub easily accessible from
all over the world. Frequent and comfortable train connections exist to
most European cities.

About the Speaker
   David DeWitt received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan
   in 1976.  Since then he has been on the faculty of the University of
   Wisconsin where he currently holds the rank of Professor and Romnes
   Fellow.  His long term research interests include parallel database
   systems, object-oriented database systems, and database system
   performance. He is the winner of this year's SIGMOD innovation
   reward for his outstanding contributions to database research and
   development.

About the Speaker
   Rudolf Bayer received a PhD in Mathematics from the University of
   Illinois in 1966. Until 1970, he worked for the Boeing Scientific
   Research Labs. From 1970 to 1972, he was affiliated with Purdue
   University. Since then, he is a full professor of Computer Science at
   the Technical University in Munich. From 1977 to 1987, he was an
   Associated Editor of the ACM "Transactions on Database Systems". Since
   1988, he is head of the "Knowledge Bases" group at the Bavarian
   Research Center for Knowledge Based Systems (FORRWISS).

Stuart E. Madnick (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

About the Speaker
   Stuart E. Madnick is the John Norris Maguire Professor of Information
   Technology and Leaders for Manufacturing Professor of Management
   Science at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management and Co-Director of the
   Total Data Quality Management (TDQM) project. His current research
   interests include connectivity among disparate distributed information
   systems, database technology, and software project management.  He is
   the author or co-author of over 200 books, articles, or reports on
   these subjects. He has been active in industry making significant
   contributions as one of the key designers of projects such as IBM's
   VM/370 operating system and Lockheed's DIALOG information retrieval
   system. He has also been the founder or co-founder of five high-tech
   firms and currently operates a hotel in 14th Century Langley Castle in
   England.

A Survey of Parallel Database Techniques and Systems

Abstract
   The tutorial first introduces the common techniques used by parallel
   database systems to partition data and execution.  Parallel variants of
   the relational operators are described.  Optimization techniques are
   then briefly outlined. Attention then turns to commercial systems
   available today.  The tutorial highlights the strengths of each of
   these systems: Teradata, Tandem, Oracle, Informix, Sybase, and DB2/2.
   
About the Instructor
   Jim Gray is a specialist in database, transaction processing, and
   dependable computer systems.  He has written many articles and built
   several systems that embody his ideas on these topics.  He is currently
   a McKay Fellow at UC Berkeley.  He has worked at Digital on Rdb and
   Sorting, worked at Tandem on NonStop SQL, and at IBM on System R,
   SQL/DS, DB2, and IMS-Fast Path.  He is co-author of Transaction
   Processing Concepts and Techniques, and Editor of the Handbook for
   Database and Transaction Processing Systems Performance.  He is a
   Fellow of the ACM and is active in the National Research Council.

Spatial Database Systems
Ralf Hartmut Gueting (University of Hagen)

Abstract
   The purpose of a spatial database system is the management of data
   about some space in two or more dimensions. Space of interest may be
   the physical world around us as in geography, urban planning,
   meteorology, or astronomy. Other spaces may, for example, represent
   parts of the human body, a VLSI design, or a 3D molecular structure. A
   spatial database keeps information about objects in such spaces with a
   clear identity, position, and extent, in contrast to image databases
   where the focus is on the manipulation of raster images of such
   spaces.
   Spatial data management imposes a number of requirements on database
   systems. Concepts are needed to describe the shape and position of
   objects in space as well as relationships between them. Data modeling
   must also provide concepts for the representation of spatially related
   collections of objects, such as partitions (of a region), or networks.
   To access efficiently objects in some particular region of the space,
   specialized spatial access methods are needed. The user interface must
   support graphical representation as well as overlay of different query
   results. Since extensions at all levels of the system architecture are
   needed, extensible database systems are the prime architectural
   framework for the implementation of spatial database systems.
   The tutorial aims at giving a coherent picture of the main research
   results obtained so far in the areas of modeling, querying, data
   structures and algorithms for system implementation, and system
   architecture.

About the Instructor
   Ralf Hartmut Gueting is currently a full professor in computer science
   at the University of Hagen, Germany. He received his Diplom and
   Dr.rer.nat. degrees from the University of Dortmund. After a one-year
   stay at the IBM Almaden Research Center in 1985, extensible and spatial
   database systems became his major research interests. His group has
   built a prototype of an extensible spatial DBMS, the Gral-System. He is
   the author of a (German) text book on data structures and algorithms
   and has published about 35 articles in computational geometry and
   database systems. He recently was a guest editor of a special issue of
   the VLDB Journal on Spatial Database Systems.

The Evolution of User Interface Tools for Database Applications

Abstract
   Traditionally, the user interface tools for database applications have
   lagged the technological advances in GUI revolution. Recent entrants
   such as PowerBuilder, SQL Windows, NextStep, etc., have made major
   strides in closing this gap.  In order to extrapolate the trends, we
   introspect the past and forecast the future.
   We will first give a historical account of the evolution of database UI
   tools since the early seventies in the context of many facets of
   database applications (e.g., querying, forms & reports, 4GL
   capabilities, and end user graphical tools).  These tools were aimed at
   improving the productivity of application developers, the primary
   clientele of SQL.
   The advent of PC database management system saw the metamorphism of
   this clientele to less sophisticated users.  These non-programmers
   (i.e., power users) who wish to build their own applications required
   different kinds of tools and the PC database industry lead this
   thrust.
   We address the design factors in both these types of tools and contrast
   them.  In doing this, we will use examples from some of the current
   products (e.g., Microsoft's Access, Gupta's SQL Widows, Powersoft's
   PowerBuilder, etc.) to highlight their power, functionality, levels of
   abstraction and ease of use.
   Lastly, we extrapolate on how this UI technology will be evolving in
   the future.

About the Instructors
   Ravi Krishnamurthy is a senior researcher at H.P. Labs, currently
   heading the Picture Programming project that is developing the
   IC-BY-EXAMPLE language.  He received his doctorate degree at the Univ.
   of Texas at Austin and then joined Moshe Zloof at IBM T.J. Watson Res.
   Center to work on the Office-By-Example project in 1981.  In 1985, he
   joined MCC to work on Budda and LDL, where he subsequently assumed the
   chief architect position of the joint project.  After leaving MCC, he
   was a co-founder of a start-up company, Logica Information Machines, in
   which he is still involved as its Chairman of the Board of Directors.
   Moshe Zloof, principal architect of H.P. Labs, is considered a poineer
   researcher in the area of data base languages and user interfaces.
   Back in the 1970's, in a complete departure from the traditional
   approach and while working at IBM, Moshe created QUERY-BY-EXAMPLE
   (QBE), the first visual programming language which not only set the
   stage for considerable research agenda, but also has been incorporated
   in many successful products such as PARADOX, DBASE IV, ACCESS, and many
   more.
   At Hewlett-Packard, Moshe is currently involved in developing the
   IC-BY-EXAMPLE language - a new paradigm to enable non-programmer
   professionals to construct their own applications.

OQL: Language, Compatibility with SQL, Implementation
Sophie Cluet, INRIA

Abstract
   OQL is the  standard for object database query languages proposed by
   the ODMG.  It borrows SQL syntax but has a functional nature that makes
   it  simpler to use, implement, and document. Improving its
   compatibility with SQL(92) and clarifying its relationship with SQL(3)
   will strongly help its general acceptance by the  database community.
   More important, ANSI(X3H2) and ODMG are working on a proposal for a
   common standard involving the current OQL.
   The tutorial addresses a public of both, industrials and researchers.
   Although standards are clearly of primary interest to industrials,
   their evolution also provides challenging issues that should not be
   overlooked by researchers.
   The tutorial  consists of three parts. First, we present OQL(1.2) in
   details and explain how to construct simple and complex OQL queries.
   Next, we discuss the OQL vs. SQL approaches and study different
   possibilities by which OQL can reach full compatibility with SQL.
   Finally, we briefly consider the language implementation.
   
About the Instructor
   Sophie Cluet is currently a researcher in the Verso team at
   INRIA-Rocquencourt. She holds a PhD from the University of Paris-Sud.
   She is one of the designers of OQL and has implemented for O2
   Technology the language's first interpreter and optimizer. She is still
   very much involved in this area (working on a future release of OQL and
   new OO optimization techniques).

Transformation-based Database Engineering
Jean-Luc Hainaut (University of Namur)

Abstract
   Transformation-based software engineering has long been considered as a
   major scientific approach to build reliable and efficient programs.
   According to this approach, abstract specifications can be converted
   into correct, compilable and efficient programs by application of
   selected, correctness-preserving operators called transformations.
   In the database engineering realm, transformations that are proved to
   preserve the correctness of the origin specifications have been
   proposed in virtually all the activities related to data engineering :
   schema normalization, DBMS schema development, schema optimization,
   model translation, schema integration, view derivation, proving schema
   equivalence, data conversion, reverse engineering, and others.
   The tutorial is a contribution to the systematic study of both
   fundamental and practical aspects of database schema transformations.
   It introduces the fundamentals of database transformations, then it
   develops a practical toolset of neutral techniques.  These techniques
   are used to revisit the main database engineering processes.  The
   description of a transformation-based CASE tool and the presentation of
   a reengineering case study demonstrates the applicability of this
   general approach.

About the Instructor
   Jean-Luc Hainaut is a professor in Information Systems and Databases at
   the Institute of Informatics of the University of Namur, Belgium.  His
   research interests comprise database technology, database methodology,
   reverse engineering, information system evolution and CASE technology.
   Currently, he is heading the multinational DB-MAIN project the purpose
   of which is to develop general methodologies and CASE tools to assist
   practitioners in solving database application maintenance and evolution
   problems.
   He is the author of two books in database and DSS design, and of over
   20 recent conference papers, most of them dealing with transformation
   techniques. He has presented several tutorials (including three on
   database reverse engineering and reengineering) in major international
   conferences on Databases and Information Systems.

Repository Internals
Philip A. Bernstein (Microsoft Corporation)

Abstract
   A repository is a metadata manager that supports design tools for CASE,
   CAD and the like. It runs as an application on a DBMS and provides
   three main functions beyond those of a standard DBMS: relationships,
   version and configuration management, and extensibility. We explain how
   these functions can be used by design tools, and what technical
   requirements are implied by those usage patterns. We then delve into
   the technical capabilities of each function. For example, relationships
   are object-valued properties that have special update semantics and can
   be scoped by configurations. Version and configuration functions allow
   tools to run either on repository objects directly or on files.
   Configurations support transitive containment (unlike file systems) and
   can scope name spaces. A tool vendor can extend the repository's model
   by adding behavior to standard repository methods on repository
   objects, e.g., by adding state to the object, checking constraints on
   the object, and adding methods to the objects.
   The presentation will draw from examples of Microsoft's and others'
   CASE tools, and where appropriate will be couched in the OLE object
   model.

About the Instructor
   Philip Bernstein is a repository architect at Microsoft, where he leads
   a joint design effort with Texas Instruments to design an open
   repository for CASE.  He was formerly an architect at Digital Equipment
   Corp., a professor at Harvard University and Wang Institute of Graduate
   Studies, and VP Software at Sequoia Systems.  Dr. Bernstein has
   published over 70 articles on the theory and implementation of database
   systems,  is coauthor of "Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database
   Systems" (Addison-Wesley, 1987). In 1994, he was awarded the ACM SIGMOD
   Innovations Award for "contributions to the development and use of
   database systems."

Temporal Databases
Christian S. Jensen (Aalborg University)

Abstract
   Temporal database technology has reached a level of maturity and
   sophistication that clearly illustrates that the support for temporal
   data management provided by current database products is very far from
   what is achievable.
   The tutorial provides an overview of important issues and concepts
   within temporal database management.  It reviews fundamental data
   modeling concepts and surveys the implementation of temporal database
   systems. It also features the consensual temporal query language TSQL2
   that has recently been designed by an international committee of
   database researchers and practitioners.  TSQL2 adds temporal support to
   the current SQL standard and is the most complete temporal query
   language to date.
   The tutorial is relevant for practitioners who work with databases
   containing time-varying data, and for database researchers who are
   interested in temporal data management.
   
About the Instructors
   Christian S. Jensen is currently an Associate Professor at Aalborg
   University, Denmark.  He has spent 4 years at the University of
   Maryland and the University of Arizona. Recently, he coordinated and
   headed two editorial boards for the ongoing consensus temporal database
   glossary initiative; he is editor for the temporal database benchmark
   initiative; and he was a member of the TSQL2 Language Design
   Committee.
   Richard T. Snodgrass received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University
   in 1982 and joined the University of Arizona in 1989. He has written or
   co-edited three books, including "Temporal Databases: Theory, Design
   and Implementation.'" He chaired the TSQL2 Language Design Committee,
   and is now working closely with the ANSI and ISO SQL3 committees to add
   temporal support to that language.

THE CONTEXT OF THE CONFERENCE
The  Conference  will  focus  on the latest developments in theory and
applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)  and  information
technology,  in  the  field of Urban, Environmental and Regional Plan-
ning. It will also focus on topics  concerning  analytical  techniques
and  data  bases  for Geographical Information Systems. The aim of the
conference is to identify problem  areas,  requiring  solutions  using
modern  technologies  and  / or the development of new research direc-
tions, concerning future applications.


TOPIC AND SUBJECT AREAS
Work suitable for presentation, although this is no more than an indi-
cation,  includes  academic research or practical applications, in the
field of urban, environmental and regional planning  matters,  spatial
analysis,  construction  of  data  bases, and geographical information
processing.

The following subject areas are mentioned by way of  example  for  the
guidance of participants:

*    Data  modelling  and  management in a GIS environment for spatial
     planning purposes
*    Design and construction of  GIS  systems,  with  an  emphasis  on
     urban, regional and environmental planning applications
*    Prototype urban GIS systems
*    Expert systems for spatial planning
*    Decision  making  support systems in urban, regional and environ-
     mental planning
*    Use of remote sensing technologies in spatial planning
*    Cognitive structure of space
*    Social and economic organization of the built and  natural  envi-
     ronment
*    Quality aspects of spatial information
*    Spatial data integration
*    Presentation of spatial information
*    User interface design
*    Design of Generic elements for GIS interfaces
*    Aspects  of  virtual reality in urban, environmental and regional
     planning


THE SITE OF THE CONFERENCE
The conference will take place in "Doryssa Bay's" Convention and  Cul-
tural  Center.  The  center  can accommodate 250 people.  The "Doryssa
Bay" Convention Center is part of the Doryssa Bay  hotel-village  that
is located in one of the most beautiful locations of the Mediterranean
on the historic island of Samos at the  village  of  Pythagorion,  the
birthplace  of Pythagoras the Great Philosopher and mathematician. The
"Village" offers 320 rooms, with full range of services. The rooms are
arranged in bungalows and in the main hotel building which are located
in a near distance with the international airport of the island.


SUBMISSIONS
Authors  are  requested  to  submit  4  copies  of  full  papers,  not
abstracts,  in  English,  to  the program committee chair, Prof. Timos
Sellis, Computer Science Division, Dept. of  Electrical  and  Computer
Engineering,  National  Technical  University of Athens, Zographou 157
73, Athens, Greece (email timos@cs.ntua.gr; tel  +30-1-772-1601).
The title page of the paper should contain the title, author, affilia-
tion, the contact authorUs mailing address, telephone number, fax num-
ber  and e-mail address, as well as an abstract. The total length of a
paper should be less than 20  pages  double  spaced  (less  than  7000
words), including figures and bibliography. The Program Committee will
evaluate the papers based on scientific significance, originality  and
relevance to the conference.

Title   : Design of Active Rule Applications: Issues and Approaches 
Abstract:
   Rules  in  database systems can be used to establish  and  enforce data
   management  policies.  A large amount of  the semantics  that  normally 
   needs  to be coded  by means  of application programs can be abstracted
   and  assigned  to both  deductive  and  active rules.   This  trend  in
   designing  database  applications  (called ``knowledge  independence'')
   brings   the  nice  consequence  that  data  management  policies   can
   effectively  evolve  just  by modifying  rules  instead of  application
   programs.

   The  use of rules  in modern database systems is a fundamental issue of
   the IDEA Esprit Project,  where it is combined with object orientation.
   In particular,  it inspires  the IDEA Methodology,  a comprehensive and
   systematic approach  to the  design of database applications  which use
   both deductive  and  active  rules.   The  IDEA Methodology  reconciles
   deductive  and active  rules by  assigning  them the role of expressing
   knowledge   about  the   application  domain,  either  with  a   purely
   declarative style,  or with  a more procedural style.   Although active
   rules   are   inherently   procedural,  in  many  cases  they  can   be 
   automatically   or   semi-automatically   generated   from  declarative
   specifications.

   This  invited paper  is  focused  on active  rules, the  main  research
   interest of the  Politecnico in the IDEA project.   We  concentrate  on
   active rule analysis,  design,  and prototyping  as  developed  in  the
   context of the IDEA Methodology.   Given that  active rules  are  quite
   complex to understand and manage,  we present  several abstractions and
   techniques  which enable their safe specification,  in particular  with
   respect to  collective  desired  properties  (such as  termination  and
   confluence). We also informally introduce the notion of modularization,
   that enables  the partitioning of complex rule sets  into modules which
   exhibit nice interaction properties.

Biography:
   Stefano Ceri  is full professor  of Database Systems at the Politecnico
   di Milano, and visiting professor at Stanford University.  His research
   interests are focused  on  extending database technology to incorporate
   data distribution,  rules,  and object-orientation.   He  is author  of
   several   international   books  and   articles,  including   books  on
   distributed   databases   (McGraw-Hill,  1984),  deductive    databases
   (Springer-Verlag, 1990), conceptual database design (Benjamin-Cummings, 
   1992); he is co-editor  with Jennifer Widom of  a recent book on active 
   databases (Morgan-Kaufmann, 1995). He was general chairman of the first 
   International  Conference  "Extending database Technology"  and  he  is 
   member  of  the  EDBT  Foundation,  VLDB Endowment,  and  DOOD Steering 
   Committee.

Title   : Deductive and Object Data Languages: A Quest for Integration
Abstract:               
   Early hybrids  of  object-oriented  and  deductive  languages were just 
   rejects from secret AI labs. However, by mid-80's, workers in databases 
   and logic programming began to take notice.  The temptation was hard to 
   resist: the object-oriented paradigm has a better way of specifying and 
   manipulating structured objects,  while logic  and  deduction offer the 
   power  and  flexibility of ad hoc querying and reasoning.  Thus, hybrid 
   languages have the potential for becoming an ideal turf for cultivating 
   the next generation of information systems.

   The  approaches  to  integration  of  the  two  paradigms  range   from 
   logic-based  languages   with    unified   declarative   semantics   to 
   message-passing prologs  to rule-based yet deductively-challenged stews 
   to Prolog/C++ brews.

   In the past eight years, my colleagues and I have been plowing our  way
   through the fields towards an object-based logic that  would be capable 
   of capturing  most of the essentials  of  the object-oriented paradigm. 
   The overall plot here  is that  once the fundamentals are in place, the 
   actual hybrid programming languages can be carved out  of the logic the 
   same way  as  deductive data  languages are carved out of the classical 
   logic.

   There  are two distinct aspects to object-orientation:  structural (the
   statics) and procedural (the dynamics).  Most of the static aspects are
   relatively easy to capture in logic, as seen from our work  on F-logic. 
   The  dynamics were harder to tame,  as  there was  no  widely  accepted 
   solution  to the problem of state changes  in deductive languages, even 
   for languages based on classical logic.  Our recent work on Transaction 
   Logic appears  to  provide  an adequate framework  for  specifying  the 
   dynamics in classical deductive languages.

   In  this  talk, I  will  review F-logic and Transaction logic, and show 
   that  the  two can be  combined  in a natural way,  yielding  a unified 
   foundation  for  future work  on  deductive  object-oriented languages, 
   both  in theory and practice.  At the end,  I will  discuss a number of 
   areas that could still make use of the plow.

Biography:
   Michael Kifer (http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/)  is  presently  an  Associate
   Professor of Computer Science with the State University of New York  at
   Stony Brook, U.S.A.  He received his  Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1985 
   from   the   Hebrew   University  of  Jerusalem,   Israel,  and    M.S. 
   in Mathematics in 1976 from Moscow University, Russia.   Michael  Kifer 
   has  done  extensive  work  in  the  areas  of  database  design, query 
   processing, knowledge representation, and logic programming.  He served 
   on several conference committees, and  was a co-chairman of the program 
   committee  for  the Second International Conference  on  Deductive  and 
   Object-Oriented Databases in Munich, Germany.  Recently,  he was also a  
   guest editor for a special issue of  Journal of Intelligent Information 
   Systems  on  the  same  subject.  Michael  Kifer  is  a  member of ACM, 
   Association for Logic Programming,  and of the  editorial boards of ACM 
   Transactions  on  Database  Systems  and  of  Journal  of   Intelligent 
   Information Systems.

				  TUTORIALS

Tutorial 1: "Temporal Databases: Recent Developments and Applications"
	    -  Professor N.L. Sarda, India

Abstract:
The context of time is basic  to  all real-world activities;  however, the 
conventional  database  management  systems  provide  little  support  for 
modelling of time and management of history data. The research in temporal 
databases  over  the  past  decade  has  contributed  many  concepts   and 
techniques to  support temporal data management.   The  objective  of this 
tutorial  is  to  provide  an  overview  of  temporal  data  models, query 
languages, implementation  strategies,  and  applications  for   real-life
problems.   The tutorial also aims  at providing a pre-view of some of the 
on-going  research  efforts  to  further  enhance  facilities  of temporal
databases.

Specifically, the following topics will be dealt with in the tutorial:
- temporal domain and its representation
- extensions to relational model
- grouped and ungrouped models
- relational temporal algebra 
- TSQL-92 (SQL-92 extended with temporal facilities)
- examples and a case study
- spatio-temporal and interval data type extensions
- branching time and alternatives in future time
- temporal extensions to object -oriented data models
- schema evolution
- storage techniques for temporal databases
- transaction management for temporal databases

The  tutorial  will   be  of  interest  to  database  users,  practioners, 
implementors and researchers as it covers modelling, case-studies/examples,
techniques and future directions.

Biography:
Nandlal L. Sarda  is  a  Professor  at  (and  presently  Chairman  of) the 
Department  of  Computer Science  and  Engineering at  Indian Institute of 
Technology,  Bombay.  He  has been teaching, researching,  practicing  and 
consulting  in the  area of  database  management  systems for the last 20 
years  (mostly at Bombay except for two years in Canada).   He  has  taken
active part  in  the  coordinated  activities  of  the  temporal  database 
research community, and has contributed many journal and conference papers 
in this area.  His other research interests include distributed and object 
oriented database systems.  He has been associated with many international 
conferences  in  the  database area, and would be serving as one of the PC 
Chairs for the VLDB'96 to be organized in Bombay.

Tutorial 2: "User Interfaces for Desk-Top Object Oriented Databases"
	    - Professor M. Livny, USA

Abstract:
Until recently,  user  interface  have  been  considered  by the  database
community as second class citizens.  For many years, most of the energy of
the  community  has  been  devoted  to the functionality  and  performance 
aspects  of  database  management  systems.   Database  design  and  query 
formulation  were  viewed  as  tasks  performed  by  professionals who use 
cryptic DDLs and 4GLs.  The end-user was expected to submit canned queries 
via a form driven terminal to a database designed,  created and maintained 
by a professional DBA.  The  main focus of the  community  was  very-large 
multi-user   high-performance  databases.   Like  many  other  aspects  of 
computing, database management systems  have recently experienced a demand 
for intuitive user interfaces that can be used by non-experts. As database 
technology  has  been  moving  from the  machine room to the desk-top, the 
distinction between the DBA and the end-user has disappeared.

More and more end-users with very little database expertise would like  to 
build a database for a relatively small collections of dynamic and complex 
data to be shared by a small group of users. A typical example for such an 
environment  are  scientific  experimental  studies  where  half  a  dozen 
scientists  share  several  hundreds of Mega-Bytes of data that consist of 
objects with hundreds of attributes. 
 
The abstraction  and  data encapsulation capabilities of OO databases make 
it much easier to capture the schema of complex data.  Unfortunately, most 
systems  expose  these  capabilities  to  the  end  user only  via cryptic 
interfaces.  While  OO technology  has the potential of making the task of 
managing Desk-Top  databases much easier to the non-expert,  the  lack  of 
intuitive  user  interfaces  prevents  most  users  from  exploiting  this 
potential.  OO databases can become a much more effective desk-top tool if 
they will provide easy access to their entire range of capabilities.
 
Graphics has proven to be a very effective means of providing an intuitive 
interface to complex systems.   Building  a graphical user  interface to a 
database, however,  is a complex and  time consuming  process.  Designing, 
implementing,  and testing such an interface  requires expertise in a wide 
range   of  disciplines.    The  tutorial  will  target  researchers   and 
practitioners who would like to develop such interfaces to OO databases in 
order to make these databases broadly accessible  to non-experts.  A basic 
knowledge of OO and database concepts and terminology will be assumed. 
 
The  audience  will  be  presented  with  a  methodology  for   designing, 
implementing,  and testing graphical user interfaces  for OO databases.  A 
formal   framework  that  captures  the  interaction  between  the  visual 
presentation  of the data  and the  database management system provides  a 
foundation to the framework. It is based on three models - Data, Personal, 
and Visual - and metaphors  that provide  mapping between  the models.  An 
overview and evaluation of existing graphical interfaces will be provided.  
The different implementations  will be classified and  compared.   Special 
attention will be devoted to a graphical schema management system that was 
designed  for an  OO Experiment Management System.  Experience obtain from 
testing the interface in real-life experimental studies will be reported.

Biography:
Miron Livny  received  the  B.S. degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1975 
from the Hebrew University  and the  M.Sc. and  Ph.D. degrees in  Computer
Science  from  the  Weizmann  Institute  of  Science  in  1978  and  1984, 
respectively.  Since 1983 he  has been on the Computer Sciences Department 
faculty  at the  University of  Wisconsin-Madison, where he is currently a 
Professor.   Dr. Livny  has been  a  Visiting Scientist  at  IBM  Yorktown 
Heights,  and  has consulted and/or had research contracts with a range of  
companies,  including CCA, MCC, Ashton-Tate, Boeing, DEC, Harris, IBM, and 
DRC.
 
Dr. Livny's research focuses  on resource management systems for  clusters
of  processing and  data providers and  on  tools  to support experimental 
science.  His  recent  work  includes Cluster Computing,  Real-Time DBMSs,
Client Server systems, and data visualization techniques.

established  cultures  forming a  unique backdrop to  a  clean and modern 
garden city.   English is spoken  everywhere  and  is the common business 
language.   Singapore is warm and welcoming all year round, with tempera-
tures ranging  from  23 to 32 degrees Celsius.   Taxi  fare  from  Changi
International Airport to the conference hotel, Excelsior Hotel,  is about  
$15 Singapore dollars. After midnight a surcharge of 50% of the taxi fare 
is payable.

Novel Approaches to Theories Underlying Requirements Engineering

Background:
-----------
As the bridge between the business and the information technology
perspective on information systems, requirements engineering
is a field of growing importance. Over the past three years,
the ESPRIT basic research programme has funded the NATURE project
in order to address fundamental issues associated with the theory 
of knowledge representation and management, domain modeling and 
reuse, process guidance and traceability within requirements 
engineering.  The workshop is intended to promote discussion of 
the main project results through presentations, software 
demonstrations, and a panel discussion.


Participation/Registration:

The workshop is held on the day prior to the European Software
Engineering Conference in Sitges, Spain (see the WWW page
http://www-fib.upc.es/Congressos/ESEC95/fulltext.txt for 
registration and accomodation information).

The workshop is open for participants from industry as well as 
research with an interest in requirements engineering. For 
registered participants in ESEC 95, there is no extra registration 
fee. When you register for ESEC, please mention that you intend 
to participate in the workshop, and send a brief notification 
message to doemges@informatik.rwth-aachen.de.


Technical Overview:
-------------------
A general framework developed in NATURE for thinking about 
requirements engineering defines RE as a process of establishing 
a system vision in context. The RE process is viewed in the three 
dimensions of technical representation, depth of specification, 
and social agreement.

Technical project contributions based on this framework include:

- knowledge representation and reasoning mechanisms and tools which 
  achieve representational freedoms through 
  + different kind of representations ranging from informal hypertext 
    to semi-formal graphics to formal conceptual models
  + meta-model based  interaction between  different perspectives,
    including reverse modeling and view integration of existing 
    software, goal and business models
  + similarity analysis based on qualitative and quantitative  models

- models and tools for supporting the reuse of generic domain knowledge
  during requirements capture and requirements critiquing  based on a
  set of domain models which have been both formally specified and 
  empirically validated

- architectures for RE environments which support model-guided and
  (almost) automatic requirements traceability along all three 
  dimensions through a combination of process repositories and 
  process-integrated tools

- process guidance according to a flexible process modeling approach
  that interprets RE as a process of contextual decision-making
  and includes traditional plan-based workflows as well as automatable
  parts of the process as special cases.

********** CANCELLATION POLICIES **********

Please note the following conditions for cancellations to VLDB `95:
Cancellation must be made in writing to MCI Travel. Cancellation before
July 10, 1995 will be accepted and all fees and payments will be
refunded (minus banking fees and handling charges). After July 10, all
payments will be refunded minus a handling charge of CHF 150.- per
person. After August 11, no refund will be made for the registration
fee and for the tours; as for accommodation, refund will depend on the
specific negotiation with each hotel.

A revised version of the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG)(NSF 95-27) and
Proposal Forms Kit (NSF 95-28) is currently being printed replacing
the prior version of the GPG (NSF 94-2) and the Proposal Forms Kit
(94-3).  Among other things, this revision implements the NSF
Investigator Financial Disclosure Policy.  Other sections have been
revised, as appropriate, for clarity as well as to make the Guide
consistent with current NSF policies, practices and procedures.  A
complete list of significant changes is included in the GPG.

The GPG will be effective for all proposals submitted on or after
October 01, 1995.  Proposals submitted prior to October 01, may
continue to use the forms contained in the previous edition or the
forms contained in the new GPG (95-27 or 95-28).  After October 01,
1995, the previous version of the GPG should be discarded.

The ascii version of the GPG is now available on STIS as nsf9527.txt
and the Proposal Forms Kit is available as nsf9528.txt. The Proposal
Forms Kit containing forms formatted in Microsoft Word for Windows
6.0. also is available as nsf9528.doc.  These electronic versions may
be used in submission of proposals to NSF.

In the near future, the GPG text also will be available in both
Microsoft Word and html formats.  A separate notice will be sent when
available.  In addition, paper copies of the revised GPG will be sent
to NSF staff and the Authorized Organizational Representative at
current NSF grantees by early September.
