Each presentation consists of multimedia segments which are obtained from a multimedia data model. In this talk, we propose to express semantic coherency of a multimedia presentation in terms of presentation inclusion and exclusion constraints that are incorporated into the multimedia data model. Thus, when a user specifies a set of segments for a presentation, the database management system adds segments into and/or deletes segments from the set in order to satisfy the inclusion and exclusion constraints. To automate the assembly of a presentation with concurrent presentation streams, we also propose presentation organization constraints that are incorporated into the multimedia data model, independent of any presentation. We give two algorithms for automated presentation assembly and discuss their complexity. And, we describe a prototype system that is being developed for automated presentation assembly. Session II: Visual: A Graphical Icon-Based Query Language Dr. Z. Meral Ozsoyoglu Visual is a graphical icon-based query language designed for scientific domains where visualization of the relationships are important for the domain engineer to express queries. Graphical objects are not tied to the underlying formalism; instead, they represent the relationships of the application domain. Visual supports relational, nested, and object-oriented models naturally and has formal bases. In addition to set and bag constructs for complex objects, sequences are also supported by the data model. Querying sequences in Visual is based on an alignment logic query language extended for querying sequences of complex objects. Concepts of external and internal queries are developed as modularization tools. A new parallel/distributed query processing paradigm is presented. =========== BIOGRAPHIES Gultekin Ozsoyoglu received a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Computer Science from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey (1972 and 1974), and a PhD in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, Canada (1980). He is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Science at The Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Ozsoyoglu's current research interests include real-time databases, multimedia databases, scientific and statistical databases and graphical user interfaces. Dr. Ozsoyoglu is the author of approximately sixty papers in database conferences and journal. He has served in program committees and panels of major database conferences. He was an ACM national lecturer, the program chair of 3rd Statistical and Scientific Database Conference, the workshops general chair of the CIKM'94 Conference, and Research Prototypes chair of ACM SIGMOD'94. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Database Administration, and a guest editor for an upcoming special issue of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. He has been on NSF, NRC, and Ford Foundation panels, and his research is supported by the NSF. Z. Meral Ozsoyoglu has a BS in Electrical Engineering (1973) and an MSC in Computer Science (1975), both from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey. The industrial program comprises industrial paper sessions and panels as well as industrial exhibits. O-O ER'95 INDUSTRIAL TRACK -------------------------- O-O ER'95 solicits submissions focusing on industrial experience with modelling methods applied to requirements elicitation, information architecture and system design for information systems. Industry and practitioner papers on other topics of interest to the conference are also welcomed. Topics include technical innovations in commercial products, reports on experience with using modelling tools, case studies from practitioners, comparative studies and evaluations using O-O & ER modelling technology in industrial settings. The Workshop "Abduction in Deductive Databases and Knowledge-based Systems" will be held on June 17. Description ----------- Besides deduction and induction, abduction has been identified by C.S. Peirce as one of three basic principles of formal reasoning. An informal characteriza- tion: In a theory T, a set E of sentences is called an abductive explanation of a possible or observed result A if the union T U {E} is consistent and A is a logical consequence of T U {E}. From a causal rule of form A <- B and the know- ledge of B, deduction infers the fact A. From A <- B, abduction generates the hypothesis B to explain the result A. Also induction generates hypotheses, but does not generate explanations, as opposed to abduction. Deduction can simulate abduction. Hence, existing deductive logic programming procedures can be used to implement abductive reasoning. Among various phases of knowledge processing in deductive databases, knowledge acquisition and knowledge mining tend to be inductive, knowledge assimilation tends to be abductive and query answering tends to be deductive. (2) Often, a call for papers (or other announcement) is posted several times --- the original call, a 'second' call, a 'final' call, and so on :-) I'd like to suggest that posters follow these guidelines: (1) Keep msgs within some reasonable length. (Most conference announcements meet this criterion as is, I think.) (2) Avoid repeat postings. The original call, plus one *short* reminder just before the deadline, ok? To make sure that your msg continues to be accessible after it is first posted, you can set up a URL and announce it in your msg. Yet driving (or surfing where the highway is flooded) can be a frustrating experience---finding your way can be difficult, road safety is poor, and when you arrive it may not be where you wanted to be. The Internet and World Wide Web have been designed essentially bottom-up to perform simple tasks, with a heavy emphasis on retrieval rather than modification of information, and on individual rather than cooperative creation and use of information. Moreover, openness of interchange has been the immediate goal, rather than restricted access to, and commercial management of, the information. The thesis of this paper is that major improvements in areas such as updatability, version management, and security are now urgently needed, and can be made by a combination of applying conventional database technology, and of extending this technology appropriately for the novel aspects of the environment. Beyond the elementary considerations for manipulating and managing shared information lies the need to raise the level of semantic awareness of the underlying systems. This is true both at the meta-level, where the description of available information may not be immediately intelligible to a given individual user, and at the level of the content of the information itself. What existing treatments of data semantics are applicable to the information superhighway, in handling the meta-information and the information content? What new approaches hold promise when focused on this area? The range of media to be considered includes text, image, audio, and video, together with hypermedia combinations of these. What information can be discovered in a generalized "document", and what did its authors explicitly aim to convey? Is there a general theory of signs that can usefully be applied, for example to inflexions in audio, or to gestures in video? The author will offer some speculative answers, and will look to the audience to improve upon them---and to raise new questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- THURSDAY Information Visualization: The Need for a Data Base Approach Jim Foley Georgia Tech My basic thesis is that the data base comunity and the information visualization community need to work together to realize the full potential of information visualization. Information visualization, like its cousin scientific data visualization, is a powerful way to effectively convey information to the user. Unfortunately, much of the information that we would like to visualize is not well-structured or well-described: notions of schemas, views, and semantic descriptors are generally lacking in information systems, such as the World-Wide Web, which we would like to visualize. This means that those who seek to create information visualizations must have considerable domain and data knowledge and may have to restructure information manually, making the creation of visualizations a labor-intensive process. We need ultimately to move toward a situation where visualizations can be created automatically, which means integrating data base concepts with visualization tools. This will in turn: + support the creation of navigational overviews of information spaces such as the World-Wide Web + allow users to make task-oriented queries of information systems + provide for automatic adaptation of information presentations to accomodate different screen sizes, different network bandwidths to the user, various user skills, and user disabilities. + allow multiple graphical views of information easily to be created. This presentation will challenge the data base community to broaden their venue to include the very important issues at the interface between data bases and information visualization. I will do this by discussing two visualization projects at Tech, showing how they need data descriptors to be effective. The first example is automatic generation of dialogue boxes from a semantic data model. A rule-driven generation approach is used, driven by meta-information in the semantic data model. Sun's Open Look style guide rules for dialogue boxes were encoded in a machine-processable form, and used to select approriate widgets for dialogue boxes. Semantic dependencies between widgets, also encoded in the data model, were used to determine the top-to-bottom placement order of the widgets. The second example is visualizing the World-Wide Web. We have developed a series of visualizations of the Web to show relationships between web pages. The visualizations are part of a navigational tool which uses queries, abstraction, and visual bindings to reduce the visual clutter which occurs when many pages and links are shown. Not surprisingly, much better results are obtained if the links and nodes are semantically typed. We will suggest that semantic data models should form the basis of next-generation authoring systems for the WWW. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- FRIDAY Value-added Mediation in Large-Scale Information Systems Gio Wiederhold Stanford University ABSTRACT: Many information-processing tasks can be defined independently of the source databases and of the applications. On networks, they can be performed by independent entrepreneurs. Such mediating services must be of value to the customers, so that their applications will access mediators rather than sources directly. Several types of value can be considered: improvement in access and coverage, improvement of content, and delegation of maintenance. We have defined mediators as modules performing such services, and will define some of the criteria for mediating modules: ownership by party who assumes responsibility for the results of the services, domain-specificity to delimit the scope of such a responsibility, and, of course, conformance with interface standards that enable interoperation. Application that benefit from mediation include planning and other decision-making tasks require information from diverse resources, as databases, reference systems, data obtained from sensors, and analyses projecting trends into the future. The sources are often autonomous, some of them are public, and will be heterogenous. The heterogeneities include representation, scope, level of abstraction, and context. Mediated results are intented to be composable by higher level applications, which have to solve problems involving multiple subtasks. Mediators hence need a machine-friendly interface to support those applications. This interface must provide good communication, while encapsulating the domain-specific tasks, so that the complexity of the composed system is not much greater than that of the individual subtasks. However, questions of effectiveness and efficiency do arise, and must be dealt with by exploiting the processing and storage capabilities of modern hardware. The corresponding architecture is a generalization of a server-client model. The partitioning enhances maintainability: the applications software staff can concentrate on functional improvements, the data resource managers on operational issues, and the technical maintenance is concenentrated in the mediator layer. The concept is network oriented, and it is hoped that mediationg services will be provided over the network by domain specialists. A number of projects are now using the mediator concept, and some standards, as KQML, are being promulgated for the interfaces that are required.
