The adaptiveness property is achieved through succinct subgraph specifications. However, existing object query languages such as the proposed OQL standard often require users to navigate through complex networks of objects to form relationships. This talk shows how OQL can be extended by incorporating traversal specifications, which provide a more flexible means of interrelating objects. As a traversal specification is executed, variables are bound to some of the objects visited. These variables are then made available to the rest of OQL. The extended query language is referred to as Adaptive Query Language (AQL). The talk will explain the syntax and semantics of the core of AQL and discuss possible extensions to AQL. A prototype implementation experience, using the Demeter/C++ Tools and the Texas object-oriented persistent store, will be discussed. The proposals of several other authors to simplify object navigation will also be reviewed and compared to AQL. Technical Features of PCTE ----------------------------- PCTE stands for "[a basis for a] Portable Common Tool Environment". PCTE provides a set of well integrated basic services which form a foundation for distributed software development environments (SDE). Systems of that sort are often termed SDE frameworks, or repositories. PCTE mainly comprises: - a distributed database management system based on the entity relationship model with extensions such as composite objects, versions, multiple inheritance, long fields (files), dynamically created views, nested transactions etc. - an execution system which offers all essential features of the POSIX model of program execution such as process hierarchies, inheritance of open files, process communication via pipes and message queues. Tools can be written as shell scripts. API vs. kernel vs. SDE ------------------------- All services described above are accessible via an application program interface (API). The ECMA and ISO standards of PCTE are functional specifications of this API. APIs for the host languages C and Ada are standardised, there is a draft for a C++ API. In order to make sure that all language-bound specifications are consistent, there is one language-independent (`abstract') specification of the PCTE services to which all language-bound specifications refer. An implementation of one of the APIs must contain a library and runtime kernel for all operations of this API (except a few operations which are optional). In addition, any product will consist of a number of administration tools for installation, backup etc., a browser, a DDL compiler etc. A PCTE-based SDE consists of a PCTE implementation and a set of tools which are based on the PCTE API and which are integrated via the PCTE services. PCTE provides a dedicated framework for distributed data and control integration in modern I-CASE environments / SDEs. In a groupware context, PCTE can also provide an excellent technology to implement process models and enact them in a distributed way leading to a new generation of highly integrated process centered SDEs. 3. History and Future --------------------- PCTE originates from an European ESPRIT project (PCTE versions 1.4 (1986) and 1.5 (1988)). It was significantly extended in a NATO project (PCTE+) and during the ECMA standardisation. In 1994, it has been adopted as ISO standard IS 13719. The standard consists of three volumes: - language-independent specs ISO/IEC 13719-1 (also ECMA-149) - C language binding ISO/IEC 13719-2 (also ECMA-158) - Ada language binding ISO/IEC 13719-3 (also ECMA-165) The PCTE specifications are maintained by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 WG22 and ECMA/TC33. There is an OMG-SIG on PCTE. The OMG-SIG, TC33 and WG22 work on additional services for fine-grained data support and CORBA compliant object-oriented extensions. PCTE is the result of of hundreds of person-years of effort over ten years and has matured significantly in this process. 4.
