OBJECTIVES: Most real-life applications require an ability to represent, manage, and reason with uncertain knowledge. Examples include diagnostic applications; data mining; image, scientific, and genome databases; and legal and military applications. Numerous formalisms for dealing with uncertainty have been studied over the years, several of which are in the context of logic programming and deductive databases. A special issue of the THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE Journal will be devoted to papers describing original research of VERY HIGH QUALITY, in all aspects of uncertainty in database systems and in deductive systems such as logic programming. The research described must have ADEQUATE THEORETICAL DEPTH together with a clear indication of the USEFULNESS and APPLICABILITY of the results, to practice. The topics include, but are not limited to, the following: UNCERTAINTY FORMALISMS * numerical approaches: probabilistic, fuzzy sets, Dempster-Shafer, possibilistic, etc. * non-numerical approaches: lattice theoretic, multivalued logics, etc. * hybrid approaches SEMANTICS * uncertainty in higher order logic systems * managing uncertainty in different data models (e.g. uncertain OODBs) * reasoning with uncertainty in the presence of incompleteness and/or inconsistency QUERY PROCESSING * complexity and termination issues * query processing and optimization * constraints and uncertainty EMERGING AREAS * foundations of data mining using uncertainty reasoning * uncertainty reasoning in scientific and genome databases * uncertainty reasoning in medical research Submissions should be no more than about 30 doublespaced pages (each page having about 40 lines of text with about 75 characters per line). Papers must be original and must not have been previously published or simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere. The papers will be reviewed based on their merit, originality and technical quality, relevance to the special issue theme, and the extent to which they will advance the frontiers of knowledge in this area. In addition, the traditional standards of quality control refereeing for TCS will apply. The approximate publication date targeted is Spring 1996. Availability of rules/triggers as part of database functionality is likely to change the way databases are modeled and applications are written. The functionality supported by active database systems is meant to meet the requirements of a number of emerging applications (such as workflow, air traffic control, CIM, network management, stock trading) where the correctness of execution is based not only on transaction semantics, but also on the timeliness of the result. Hence, the integration of active functionality, time component, and real-time capability seems to be the next logical step. Both active functionality, rule based execution, and real-time capability are crucial for the support of time-critical and embedded applications. Active database systems (ADBS) typically support event-based rules and provide a uniform mechanism for supporting many traditional capabilities as well as new ones. Real-time database systems (RTDBS), on the other hand, support various types of timing constraints in addition to transaction semantics. The University of Skovde, Sweden, has research interest in both the areas of active and real-time database systems (ARTDB), and we would like to bring researchers and practitioners in these two areas together to discuss research and implementation issues for supporting active and real-time database systems. A number of open issues need to be resolved in order to combine active and real-time capability. Introducing rules and triggers into a real-time database increases the complexity of transactions, predictability, scheduling etc. Although extensive research has been carried out in both areas, few proposals have been made to integrate active and real-time capabilities. It seems timely for these two research communities to get together to identify and share research results as well as chart new directions. Paper Submission ---------------- The main emphasis is to address those issues reflecting the problems associated with incorporating i) active capability, and ii) real-time capability into a single database system. We strongly encourage submissions that address research and development in these two areas (espcilly where they overlap), or that propose new approaches suitable for fulfilling the demands that characterizes systems of the next generation. Suggested topics and issues include, but are not limited to: Active databases: Design and architecture; Performance; Temporal and real-time aspects; Event specification; Applications. Real-time databases/systems: Transaction constraint modelling; Representation of resource requirements; Precedence constraints; Transaction scheduling; Concurrency control mechanisms; Contingency plans; Applications. It is also acknowledged that issues of distribution may be critical to the success of ADBS and RTDBS. Research in distributed and federated DBMSes is therefore of interest to the workshop in as much as it addresses the support of ADBS and/or RTDBS. Each submission should include 5 copies of original papers not exceeding 20 double spaced pages or 5000 words. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit papers on any topics of relevance to Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. We also invite working demonstrations of discovery systems. The conference program will include invited talks, a demo and poster session, and panel discussions. Active discussion format will be encouraged to maintain the workshop feel that previous participants found valuable and constructive. The conference proceedings will be published by AAAI. As in previous KDD Workshops, a selected set of KDD-95 papers will be considered for publication in journal special issues and as chapters in a book. Applications with increasingly large collections of complex constraints are being proposed and techniques to manipulate such collections of constraints are rapidly improving as a result of the incorporation of database technology. We hope that progress in the area will be fostered by interactions generated in workshops such as this one. There were a total of 16 submissions to the workshop, all of high quality. We were able to select only 10 papers due to time constraints. The papers accepted for presentation have been compiled into an informal proceedings which is available as Technical Report UNL-CSE-94-025, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, November 1994.
