The best works of G as a music director in telugu cine field are "lavakuSa" and "rahasyam". I strongly believe that the lyricists, music director and director as a team were responsible for the making of the movies "lavakuSa" and "rahasyam". Then, why did G not compose music to other movies with the same vigor and interest? The reasons may be many. But some of them are due to personal problems, availability of time and money. Everyone agrees that G was gifted with extraordinary vocal abilities. He learned classical (carnatic) music and his father was a harikatha vidwan. Music composition is more to do with creativity than merely possessing the knowledge. At the sametime the music director (MD) should have very deep knowledge of many(all) instruments. Some of the main responsibilities of the MD are: selection of the singers, the mood (rAga) for the situation and the orchestration. I wonder how much freedom was given to G to compose music for a movie. We should not forget that it is what G used do to make a living. If one listens to some of the old verses (before 45's), one can not undestand the lyrics as the music is mixed with singing. You see the same pratice for songs also (before 45's). The 1st generation cine music director bhImavarapu narasimhArAvu was responsible for the introduction of the music between stanzas(caraNAlu). G has a unique way of composing verses (padyAlu). His compositions of pushpavilApam, kuntikumAri, gOghOsha, sisuvu, prAbhAti etc etc in verses have a distinct place. In my personal opinion, no one could come close to him in this style. G also is blessed witha unique way of saying the vacanam before some of the verses and songs. Some examples are: "nI pUjakOsam pUlu kOsukoddAmani" in "pushpa vilApam" (these words are not there in the original work of karuNaSrI) "mRti anTE bhayamlEni vyakti pADeTuvanTi pATa" in "bahudUrapu bATasAri" "pasiDipolAllO pallepaDucu tana mAvakOsam kalavarapaDutU ilA pilistOndi" in "rAvOyi bangAri mAmA" During my visit to India, I had the opportunity to meet SrI pIsapATi narasimhamUrthy. He is very well known for his unique style in "padya paTanam". Most of the present stage actors spend too much time singing the rAga (rAgAlApana) after reciting the padyam but ignore emphasising the clarity while reciting the padyam. It is only people like G and SrI pIsapATi who can recite/sing verses with clarity. G has very vast knowledge in folk songs, harikatha, burrakatha and various forms of songs sung by farmers in villages. He mentioned this in the book "bhuvanavijayam" also. The hariktha in "shAvukAru" and burrakatha in "kanyASlkam" are good examples of his knowledge about the two art forms. I feel that SrI pendyAla (after recongnizing the talent of G), made him sing "SrInagajAtanayam" in vAgdAnam by giving a free hand. The song "jAlibombailE mAvA O mAvA" in "peLLi sandaDi, "yeyyara debba daruveyya dibba banDamIda dabAdibAbAdara andAlasubba" in "lavakuSa" are examples of his folk music knowledge. Master vENu got best out of G in the movies "rOjulu mArAyi", "rAjamakuTam", "namminabanTu" and rAjU-pEdA (the song "jEbulO bomma") based on folk. If I have to rate G as a music director, I name (ra)sAlUri, pendyAla, G, master vENu and ramEsh naidu in the same order. pendyAla made G sing more classical oriented songs (jayabhEri, jagadEkavIruni katha etc) than any other MDs including G himself. G might have advised other MDs to change/modify some of the songs as he is also very knowledgeable. I feel that G has special interest for flute, vINa, organ, sitar and drums. The selection(emphasis) of an instrument is mainly based on the rAga of the song. G extensively used organ in pAtALa bhairavi. Even in pourANika movies like pAdavavanavAsam, paramAnandayya sishyula katha etc he used drums extensively. G did not do these kind of experiments in earlier years. In my opinion he was the first MD to use a vishAda rAgam "sivaranjani" for a happy mood in the song "vagalarANivi nIvE" in "bandipOTu". Recently iLLaya rAjA used the same rAga to compose "ammanI tIyyanI debba" which became a super hit. In old movies the music directors used to play an instrument in a rAga (before and after a song) and prepare the audience for the upcoming song. The audience are completely tuned for the upcoming song and used to enjoy it. I do not know why this approach is ignored. The vINa bits before the verse "rangAru bangAru" (rAga: kalyANi) in lavakusa are unforgettable. The same way the sitar bits before "kalanInA nI talapE" (rAga: hindOLam) in sAntinivAsam have a unique place in telugu cine music world. G used some copy tunes also. For example the movie sAntinivAsam is made in 27 days. So, you see many copy tunes by G in that movie. At a later stage we can discuss the compositions of G in each and every of the 100 movies he composed music for. In gunDamma katha he used his own composition "enta ghATu prEmayo" bits (instrument) while jamuna cooks ("kUralu tarugutunDagA"). Very recently I watched the movie sArangadhara (first time) and surprised to notice the rAga vasanta in the title song. It is really a treat to watch the works of G as a singer and music director. I am very happy to see the artcles by SrI chandrasEkhar, SrI rAja and Sri srInivAs on the same topic. Regards, Ramanna P.S:- As the owner of a video store, I am planning to collect all the old movies and in particular the works of G as a music director. Many of us have pointed out earlier that this movie has a song which is sung by P.B. Sreenivas and susiila on the record and Ghantasala and Jikki in the movie. In fact, there are two songs. Also, in my view all the songs must have been rerecorded for the movie, there are many differences between the songs in the movie and the songs that were broadcast by AIR. The two songs that were sung by P.B.S and susiila on the record and by Ghantasala and Jikki in the movie are 1) cheTTulekka galava o' narahari puTTalekka galava 2) cilaka gorinka kulikE paka paka niivE cilakaitE nenE gorinka Also, the song 'karunaalavaala idi niiku liila antayunu vinta' has more charanam's than are usually broadcast by AIR, which in most cases is what we have on an LP. Two other charanams that one don't hear on AIR a) kaanta cheti lopala E mantramunnado b) sriihariyE naTana sutradharii kaani There are atleast 20 songs in this movie. In fact, I believe if some one counts the total words spoken by ANR and the words in the songs sung by Ghantasala, G would beat ANR outright. But, you know ANR is the hero. No wonder that ANR once said there are movies which were successful just because of the songs sung by Ghantasala. Other songs this movie has and those sung by G are 4) niila gagana ghana syama deva niila gagana ghana syama (ghantasala) (this song also has one extra charanam in the movie) 5) ananda mayE ali niilavEni apurupamaina andaala devii (ghantasala, jikki) 6) EdEdu lokaala Elika niipaina padaga caladoka naaluka (ghantasala) 7) naadu hiranyakasapudu (padyam, ghantasala) 8) kaanaga raava O sriihari raava (ghantasala, jikki) 9) mahaasakti mantulaina nii mahima teliya (padyam, ghantasala) There are atleast another 10-15 songs in the movie sung by susiila, jikki madhavapeddi. It made my job easy to comment on these non-film songs. BTW, ten years ago I have come across a song by G and I do not think it is from a movie. It goes like "vaLLu jhallu mantundira vOrOri cinnODA" in rAga kalyANi. If anyone heard this song, please come forward and throw some light on the pariculars of this song. Out of all these non-film songs/verses, there are only some that caught my attention. The others are O.K to listen to but the following have something special. ********************* swatantrasiddhi - aa mogal raNadhIrulu As the title says it is about the independence day and about the freedom fighters responsible to get independence. I was mesmarized by the crispness, clarity and the sRti of G' voice. G himself was a freedom fighter and spent 18 months in jail. It is composed in one of his favorite rAgas, mOhana. The patriots go as far as tAntiyATOpi and jhAnsi laxmibAyi who tried to defend our motherland from the invasion of moghuls. ********************* ********************* bhAratIyula kaLAprAbhavammu This verse is about the greatness of sarOjini nAiDu. Though born in present W. Bengal, she is married to a telugu and hence the part of name nAiDu. Composed in rAga mOhana. This verse starts at a soothing low tone but inspires everyone during the process of reaching the end (claimax). ********************* ********************* ammA sarOjinIdEvi This song is also on sarOjinidEvi (sarOjini nAiDu). The first female governor of (postindependence) U.P. If you listen to this song carefully, you find similarities with "prEmakOsamI valalO padenE" and "kanugonagalanO lEnO" in pAtALabhIravi. The reason is that all these three are composed in the same rAga sindhubhIravi. Very good and appropriate lyrics for the achievements of sarOjini nAiDu. ********************* ********************* pushpAnjali + pushpavilApamu One of the best works of late jandhyAla pApayya sAstry(JPS) and the most popular non-film song/verse of G. Both G and JPS became popular by this combination. Eventhough the vacanam before each verse is not the work of JPS, it gave a nice flavor to the entire work. ********************* bahudUrapu bATasAri This song is written and composed by G in rAga kalyANi. Can you find some similarities of this song and the song "kuDiyeDamItE porapATulEdoy" in devadAsu? Both of them are composed in the same rAga and the usage was also very similar. It is interesting to note the usage of a pleasant rAga for a sorrow mood. ********************* rAvOyi bangArumAma A very well composed song in rAga AbhEri. If I am not mistaken the lyricist is konakaLLa venkaTaratnam. At one time of his life, G was obsessed with this rAga and composed many songs in it. Around 4 or 5 songs were composed by G in the movie "peLLinATi pramANAlu" in the same rAga. Very appropriate song to sing in get togethers. The AlApana in the 3rd stanza (caraNam) is well suited for a boatsman (nAvikuDu) and shows the creativity of G as a composer. ********************* talaninDa pUdanDa Composed in the rAga kalyANi. This song has a sAki and it starts as "ArajanIkara mOhanabimbamu". G has done an excellant job in using vIna to build the tempo in the sAki and before the starting of the actual song. It is a fast beat song and good selection to sing in get togethers. ********************* kuntIkumAri - padyamulu - karuNaSrI (on E. P) Out of the entire work of karuNaSrI or JPS, G selected only 12 verses and composed the music. When I first heard this work, I was not impressed at all("nAku spandana kalagalEdu"). But as I spent more time, I realized the beauty in G's composition. In my opinion G 's voice is unforgettable in the following instances. 1. rAlutunnavi AmenEtrAlanunDi bAlakuni muddu cekkuTaddAlamIda... 2. gAlitAkuna jalatAru mElimusugu jArenokinta.. ^^^^^^^^^^^ yI padAnni nijangAnE jArindannaTTlugA pAdADu. 3. kuntibhOjaputri snigdha sukumAri Ame kuntikumAri... 4. kannanalusuku paTTeDannamIna peTTukOnOcanIti pApisTidAna 5. marulurEketta biDDanu marala yettukonucu pAlinDlapI ottukonucU ********************* ashTapadulu (praviSarAdhE, dhIrasamIrE, ramatE yamunA.., rAdhikA kRshNA ) (On E. So, I am not going to add anymore to that. ********************* ********************* EDukonDala swAmi ekkaDunnAvayyA namO venkaTESA jaya jaya SrI venkaTESA SEshAdri SikharAna tiruvenkaTAdhISA jagadISA We discussed these songs earlier. ********************* ********************* nI konDaku nIvE rappinchukO Composed in rAga cakravAkam. One can find similarities of this song with his own other composition "yEDukonDalavADa vekaTAramNA" in "peLLicEsi cUDu". I do not know when this song was recorded. Looks like it is recorded/sung during the last two years of his life. ********************* ********************* SrIrAma danDakam Composed in rAga Arabhi. I first heard this song in USA in 1982. Very much impressed by the composition and the singing abilities of G. Nobody can come close to G in these kinds of singing forms. Similar songs of G are: 1. SrI kAminIkAmitAkara sAkAra kAruNyadhAra navAnkUra... in pADuranga mahatyam 2. jaya jaya mahAdEva sambhO harA sankarA.. in kALahastIswara mahatyam 3. hE pArvatInadha kIlAsa sailAgravAsA.. in sItArAma kalyANam 4. The transition from the first verse in bhUpAlam to the second verse in malayamArutam reminded me of the song "mElukO SrIrangA" in vipranArAyana and the singer was A.M. rAja. (ra)sAlUri composed "mElukO SrIrangA" in vipranArAyana in the same rAgAs bhUpAlam and malayamArutam. My other favorite in this collection is "kamalAlu vikasincu" in rAga Sahana. ********************* karuNAmayi - rAdhanurA prabhU niraparAdhanurA This is a collection of three verses. This verse reminds me of the song "SrI rAmuni ceritamunu" in lavakuSa. Both of them are set in the same rAga. ********************* ********************* pADanA prabhU Composed in rAga sindhubairavi. I should say Sreenivas is bias in giving all the four verses of pApAyi because it is written by none other than mahAkavi gu''rr''am jhAShuvA(GJ). I am a great admirer of GJ. It is unfortunate to know that G composed and sang for only one of the many works of GJ. In addition to his description, I would like to add one "classic" which I will never forget in my life. That is the song "Kallu moosukoni vallu choosukoni kaalam gadapaku telugoda challani bhagyam kalavoda bahu chakkani bhagyam kalavoda" I donot know how of us listen to this song but every time I listen to it, it provides me some confidence. I would also like to get the name of the raga/ragas of this song. Thank you for providing me an oppurtunity to share this. I vaguely remember this song too, but always thought that its a film song. I may be wrong. One more song where I am n't sure is 'kavi kalamuku, Silpi uliki, kaLa kunceku, ii mUTiki mummATiki sATE lEdOy, dhITE lEdOy ....'. Has any one heard it before? I recorded it long ago from AIR. For your information, if anyone of the list members is interested in the lyrics of any of the non-films songs listed before, please send me a mail. Also, please mention whether you 'd like to have them in Romans (wRITten!) or as a post-script file (so that you can take a printout in Telugu!). I may not be able to respond promptly in the next 8days, but you 'll hear from me latest till 9th July. BTW the lyricson sarOjaniidEvi and swAtantryamu etc. were written by tOlETi venkaTareDDi, who unfortunately expired at young age. But in the foue years he was active in film field (debut: adRshTadiipuDu, '50) he wrote some immemorable lyrics; jiivitam and kALahastiiSwaramAhAtmyam were the most the well-known films. > pushpAnjali + pushpavilApamu > combination. Unless one Its G's FIRST record, featuring 'nagumOmunaku niSAnAtha bimbamu' song on the other side of the disk. It was released around '44/'45 and also his first film song (in swargasiima) was recorded around the same time. I personally think that the earlier record was released before. Perhaps he was highly influenced by the 'highly' successful solos of sAlUri (and also sAlUri's duets with rAvu bAlasaraswati) of early/mid 40s. > pApAyi - boTavrEla mullOkamulu, gAnamAlimpaka, nava mAsamulu, UyEla > toTTi. > I should say Sreenivas is bias in giving all the four verses of pApAyi :-) Yes, I must admit that! He also provided an analysis of ragas for various G+s private songs; I found that quite educational. I do agree with sri Ramana that some of G+s all time best as a music director, are Lavakusha and Rahasyam. They really are musical extravaganzas, particularly Lavakusha and it is fitting that G was responsible for them. Of the many LavaKusha songs, my brother used to say that G has sung +sree ramunicherithamu+ and +vinudu vinudu...+ separately for TTD and it was often played in the seventies on the Thirumala hills. Has anyone else heard them? I would like to hear from people if it is true. We also talked about G as a writer(lyricist). Eventhough his contribution was modest in this area, nevertheless, it is an additional feather in his cap, on top the dual roles as singer and music director. Thus he was peerless during his time and perhaps during any another time. Probably his last private songs, that were recorded in stereo, were four songs on sai baba written by him. They were quite nice indeed. Someone was compiling songs of G on Lord venkateswara; I just heard a song from my archives, by G and P susheela. I do not know other details. The song is Pilichina palukave swamy, silaga nilichevemi.AN excellent song. sri Raja put up sometime ago some info about at H&M Enterprises who sell Indian music Cds. The address was :http://www.webindia.com/cust/us/handm/handm.html. I burrowed through the lists and found a CD of Gs songs in Tamil. The details are: B93-KG The Unforgettable Gandasala+s(Solo). There are 19 songs. Iwill review it when I get hold of it. It seems to have some really rare songs. On behalf of the group we welcome sri Ramesh who joined recently, hope he will enjoy the postings and will find something to contribute as well. To: ghantasa@lucy.cs.wisc.edu Date: Fri, 30 Jun 95 11:01:42 EDT In-Reply-To: <2FF47E98@mailpc.brs.gov.au>; from "Chandrashekar, Muni" at Jun 30, 95 3:32 pm Mailer: Elm [revision: 70.85] Hi everyone, This is my first entry into this discussion group. I would like to start by writing about what I liked most, during G (Ghantasala) era. My personal favourite combination (eventhough a lot of people generally tend to overlook) was Mahadevan + G. Pendyala and SRRao used to give some excellent classical based music, but Mahadevan (IMHO) used to be the best at giving some of the *masterful* *tunes*. He was the best at it, until Ilayaraja came over. His tunes had so much melody in them, and really used to take my heart away. Here, I don't mean to say that others didn't have it, but he certainly was great at it. Master Venu used to be the second on my list. Here are some of my personal favourite TUNES by Mahadevan of G era. * Naa Paata Nee Nota, Paadutha, Mudha Banti (mooga manasulu) * Nannu Vidisi Neeve Po levule, Silala pai (Manchi Manasulu) * Adigo Navalokam (Veerabhimanyu) * Devudane Vaadu, Adagaka (Daagudu Moothalu) * Divi nundi Bhuviki (Tene Manasulu) * Ekkadiki potavu, Parugulu teese (Atma Balam) * Mallunna Maanyalunna (Thodu Needa) * Anaganaga oka raju (Atma Bhanduvu) * Eee vudayam Naa hrudayam (Kanne Manasulu) * Chetilo, Nalla Vaade (Dasara Bullodu) * Cheekati Velugula (Vichitra Bandam) * Nee Kosam, Evari Kosam (Premnagar) * Valapuvale theeyaga (Sumangali) * Thella Cheera, Nanu Veedani (Antasthulu) * Chinta Chettu, Mummummu (Adrushtavantulu) * Edadugula, Sri Rama Chandra (Bangaru Babu) * Abbaye Pudatadu (Manchivadu) * Dhanamera (Lakshminivasam) * A poem (Kanchu Kota) * Prati Raatri (Eka Veera) I might have forgotten some. Please list some of your favourites of this combo. -- Bhimaraju Kalidindi
