Perhaps >a much-needed publicity stunt... what? Perhaps it was a publicity stunt. If so, my thoughts go along these lines: so what. I mean, the world REVOLVES around publicity stints these days. That's just the way it is, and who's to say that it's always bad? I mean, yeah, a lot of times it IS bad, but my thoughts on this case go something like this: I love NASA. If people want to call this a publicity stint, that's fine, but it's not "JUST a publicity stint" as some people would call it. It's a necessity for them to survive. Ever since the Challenger incident, NASA lost funding and support. Granted it was a horrible mistake, and I do want to whop some of the engineers upside the head, but the fact remains that for about 20 years NASA had NOT had a fatality in space. The government understood the risks when NASA began to be funded. It's like the army. Soldiers die in the army. They know that's a possibility and it happens. When they die, it's a tragedy, but we don't shun the army for it. The risks are understood. Anyway, I've gone off topic again. Yeah, it's a publicity stint. You know why? They have no money and no support. You would do it too. I think it was beautiful, frankly. I admire those who decided it was time to do it, and I'm happy for Glenn, who wanted to do it. One more thing: those who do call it "JUST a publicity stint" in their disparaging manner annoy the shit out of me. One reason for that: I can't stand hypocrits (betcha I spelled that wrong... It's a BAD word that I don't like to use.) NASA's original foundation was in publicity, if you'll recall. The cold war ring a bell to anyone? The space race? ALL publicity. How come people can gripe about the nature of NASA changing when they are the ones who BOUGHT it during the space race? It's always been a publicity stint for our nation. It never bothered me at all. I'm glad I can learn about space through this, and hey! Let's hear it for plastics! - --- this rant brought to you by the Allie ranting specialists ltd. copyright 1998.
