Its main objective was= to promote database technologies in Hong Kong. Its scope was a broad coverag= e of database advanced technologies, methodologies and software tools. The wor= kshop has been an international annual event ever since then. SCOPE In today's information technologies, a single database can rarely meet a company's needs. Instead, multi-databases is the norm for most companies = to run their daily operations and decision support systems. The technologies= to develop and manage the multi-databases can be divided into data mining, d= ata warehousing and client/server databases. Advances in data gathering, storage, and distribution technologies has ou= t performed than the techniques for analyzing and understanding data. There= is an urgent need for automated data mining and knowledge discovery in datab= ases. Data mining is used to discover patterns, clusters and models from data w= hich are then rendered in operational forms that are easy for people to visual= ize and understand. It is a general rule that the bigger the database, the more difficult it = is to sustain high levels of performance. The key objective of data warehous= ing is to provide business executives with flexible access to vast quantities= of information through loosely structured queries. Data warehousing is a continual process which enables a corporation to assemble operational and other data from a variety of internal and external sources. It transforms= that data into consistent, high-quality, business information, distribute that information to the points of maximum value within the organizations and provide easy, flexible and fast access for busy non-technical users. In a client/server systems, users are capable of interconnecting various platforms efficiently and transparently to distribute data and applicatio= n program across heterogeneous systems in a computer network. Application processing is developed between client and server workstations. The processing is initiated by the client and performed by the server, and bo= th client and server cooperate to run an application. A client/server system increases processing power by separating the database management system f= rom the application; the client as the front-end system handling the user interface and server as backend system accessing the database. PAPER SUBMISSIONS Authors are invited to submit previous unpublished contributions for inclusion in the workshop. The papers, limited to 20 pages or 3,000 words= will be carefully reviewed. The workshop will accept no more than 200 attendee= s in order to foster an interactive atmosphere among participants. The program committee co-chairmen are: Dr Joseph Fong Professor John G Hughes Department of Computer Science Faculty of Informatics City University of Hong Kong University of Ulster Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong Co. (1) RESEARCH PAPERS, which describe recent important advances in sta- tistical and/or scientific databases. Theoretical papers in this category should include a solid motivation for why the specific results are important to domain scientists and how they are going to influence the development of statistical or scientific data- base systems. Systems papers in this category should describe either complete working systems that are being tested by domain scientists or specialized techniques that can significantly enhance the power of actual statistical or scientific database systems. (2) EXPERIENCE/CHALLENGE PAPERS, which describe actual prototype or product implementations, pose problems that current technology cannot handle well, or identify important industrial trends that could affect the future research directions in the field. Papers in this category should be based on real-life experiences and should clearly place their contribution in the context of the current state of the art and relevant literature. Submitted papers should be clearly marked on the front page by the appropriate category for which they are intended. The Program Commit- tee may, at its discretion, switch papers that are deemed more appropriate for the other category. In addition to papers, SSDBM-97 invites proposals for panels, as well as prototypes for demonstration at the conference. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ===================== PAPERS should be up to 20 pages long, 2-spaced, in font size at least 10 (8000 words). Within 60 miles lie the Pacific Ocean, the Olympic Rain Forest, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States (Mount Rainier), and hundreds of miles of premier hiking trails in the Olympics and Cascades, and Seattle. 100 miles to the south is Portland, the Colum- bia River, Mt. St. Helens (the most recent active volcano in the U.S.), and more mountain trails and ocean beaches. Within 100 miles to the north, accessible by ferry, is Victoria, British Columbia. Though yearly rainfall can top 60 inches (120 in the rain forest), August is one of two drought months -- and is typically rain-free. Olympia offers the state capital (a replica of the 'other' Washington's capital building) and Gardens, the second largest farm- ers' market in Washington State, boating, salt and freshwater fishing, clam digging (including Evergreen's mascot - the geoduck), fresh oysters (Olympia oysters!), excellent golf courses and tennis courts, and five miles from the center of town, The Evergreen State College. Founded in 1972 as the state's four-year liberal arts college, Ever- green has a national reputation as an innovator in interdisciplinary education and science and arts education. The campus is a 1,000 acre ecological study area, with 1300-feet of frontage on Puget Sound. Conference participants will be welcome on the College's beach and at the 'Rec' Center, which boasts an 11-lane swimming pool, raquetball and tennis courts, and other facilities. Extraction Message-Id: <199701291731.LAA17264@ricotta.cs.wisc.edu> To: dbworld@ricotta.cs.wisc.edu FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ================== SUMMER SCHOOL ON INFORMATION EXTRACTION (SCIE-97) University of Roma, Tor Vergata, Villa Mondragone Frascati, Roma, Italy, 14-19 July 1997 The Artificial Intelligence group of the Department of Computer Science, Systems and Production of the University of Roma, Tor Vergata, in cooperation with the Italian Association of Artifical Intelligence (AI*IA), is pleased to announce the first Summer School on Information Extraction 1997 (SCIE-97), to be held in Frascati, Roma, Italy, on 14-19, July . Aim of the school is to bring together researchers and practicioners of the different scientific areas involved in Information Extraction (Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Statistics, ...) to stress its multidisciplinary nature. The increasing availability of new information trasmission technologies demands new and more personal information filtering methods: in fact it is obvious that it is not the amount of information that gives the value but the possibility to access it at the right time and in the most suitable form. The need of users to have filtered access to a mass of multi-media information by means of a personalised information profile, induced a growing effort in industries and state-owned organizations (e.g. academia) in launching projects to develop systems satisfying these requirements. Fully developed systems should provide the user with filtered information, that is direct access to pertinent data among huge data flows. This has the benefits, from the users' viewpoint, to dramatically reduce the necessary browsing time. Information extraction is a crucial need in several IT areas (e.g. document management, access to full text databases, or navigation in texts) and its successful application will be a relevant progress towards the future information society. The Summer School on Information Extraction (SCIE-97) aims to put together advanced contributions to studies and projects on Information Extraction from the different involved areas. The school is organized as a set of technical courses held by international experts in the field, on the main scientific IE themes. Technical demonstrations of current IE technologies and systems will be also held at the school. Specific workshops are planned to favor the cooperative discussion among specialists and fellows. ============================================================================ A preliminary list of invited teachers as well as the related course subjects follows: 1)-Yorick Wilks (University of Sheffield) "Information Extraction: methodological and technological issues" 2)-Bran Boguraev (Apple Computer -Cupertino) "Terminology identification and extraction" 3)-Greg Grefenstette (Rank Xerox Research -Grenoble, France ) "Quantitative methods for NLP driven IR" 4)-Ralph Grishman (University of New York) "Processing sublanguages" 5)-Alan Smeaton (University of Dublino) "Language processing and Large scale Information retrieval" 6)-Nicola Guarino (LADSEB-CNR Padova) "Formal onthology for knowledge sharing and integration" 7)-Lorenza Saitta (University of Torino) "Unsupervised and Supervised learning" 8)-Sophie Cluet (INRIA, Parigi) "Methods and tools for data base management of structured documents" ============================================================================ The Program Commettee is composed by: # prof. Real-time database systems provide issues for the processing of time-constrained transactions in time-critical applications, whereas active database systems provide rules for triggering transactions to monitor and react to changes in the external environment in a timely manner. Although the applications of real-time databases and active databases have similar characteristics, their research has proceeded separately. In recent years, there is a strong move toward integrating these two new technologies. However, the integration is not trivial. A lot of design issues have to be reconsidered and solved. The purpose of this special issue is to report new research results on this newly emerging area, real-time active databases. The special issue will focus on (but is not limited to) the following topics and issues in the context of the design and development of real-time active database systems : - scheduling of time-constrained triggered transactions - deadline and priority assignment - concurrency control and recovery - modelling of real-time active transactions - coupling modes for triggering time-constrained transactions - rules specification and evaluation - system architecture - commitment of transactions - replicated data management - prototyping of real-time active database systems - applications and tools Papers should be on the border between theory and practice, reporting findings with practical implications. They should contain some sort of practical evaluation of their findings, through either experimentation, simulation, analysis, and/or experience. Typically these databases are heterogeneous in that they store different types of data, represent data differently, use different data man agement software and run on different computer hardware. Organizations are increasingly finding the need to access data from multiple such databases to support their day-to-day functions, such as, decision making and planning. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important to develop techniques that facilitate interoperability among multiple heterogeneous databases. While advances in communication and database technology have made it possible for databases to communicate with each other, interoperability among heterogeneous databases requires the development of techniques to resolve, among others, the following problems: semantic differences among the constituent databases, differing structural representations, differences in logical interpretations of the data , and differences in naming and formatting conventions that may have been used in the databases. An emerging trend in heterogeneous database interoperability is Data Warehousing. Data Warehousing solves the interoperability problem (to a certain extent) by extracting (a subset of data) from multiple heterogeneous legacy databases, resolving incompatibilites in the data, and storing them in one (or more) large read-only databases. Data stored in the data warehouse is typically used for decision-support applications. The objective of this mini-track is to provide a forum for IS researchers to disseminate and exchange ideas on heterogeneous database interoperability and data warehousing. We would like to encourage papers on, but not limited to, the following topics: - Any aspect of Data Warehousing - "Traditional" approaches to Heterogeneous database interoperability and their applicability in a Data Warehousing context - New techniques for schema integration - global schema and federated schema approaches - Discovery of semantic knowledge from heterogeneous databases - Resolution of semantic heterogeneity among heterogeneous databases - Advanced data models for facilitating heterogeneous database interoperability - Instance integration - Schema evolution in heterogeneous databases - Multidatabase approaches to heterogeneous database interoperability - Metadata representation and its role in heterogeneous database interoperability - Intelligent software agents and heterogeneous databases - Novel architectures for heterogeneous database interoperability - Query language specifications for heterogeneous database access - Syntactic and semantic query optimization in heterogeneous databases - Query decomposition and assembly of results - Information retrieval techniques and their application to heterogeneous databases - Communication paradigms in a heterogeneous database management system - Transaction management and concurrency control in heterogeneous databases - Interoperability among advanced databases, such as, temporal, active, real-time and multi-media databases. *Mini-Track Chair* Ramesh Venkataraman Assistant Professor Department of Information Systems University of Maryland Baltimore County Baltimore, MD 21250 e-mail: venkatar@umbc.edu Phone: (410) 455-3937 Fax: (410) 455-1073 Please send any questions and all submissions for the mini-track on Heterogeneous Database Interoperability and Data Warehosuing to: venkatar@umbc.edu *Submission Guidelines* Each submission must be FORWARDED ELECTRONICALLY AS A WORD PROCESSING FILE (MS WORD OR WORDPERFECT FORMAT) ATTACHED TO AN E-MAIL MESSAGE to the mini-track chair. If this is not possible, then authors should contact the mini-track chair and arrange for a suitable workaround. Each submission is limited to THREE-PAGES IN LENGTH (APPROXIMATELY 1,750 WORDS) INCLUDING ALL FIGURES, TABLES, APPENDICES, AND REFERENCES, and must include the following: a) The name, e-mail address, mailing address, university/organizational affiliation, and phone/fax numbers of the contact person for the submission in the first few lines of the file, b) The submission title and the author's(s') name(s), the author's(s') e-mail address(es), mailing address(es), and author's(s') organization/ university affiliation(s), c) An abstract of the submission, d) The body of the submission, and e) A list of references or a bibliography. All conference submissions and the submission review processes will be managed through e-mail. The receipt of submissions will be quickly confirmed by the mini-track chair. Submissions should follow the style guidelines of the MIS Quarterly. All camera-ready copy preparation details will be provided to submitting authors by the mini-track chairs through e-mail upon acceptance. *The AIS Americas Conference* The Association for Information Systems (AIS) is a relatively new professional organization whose purpose is to become the premier global organization for academicians specializing in Information Systems. AIS invites scholars and practitioners from throughout the Americas and the world to contribute to and participate in the program for the 1997 Americas Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. The program for AIS'97 is diverse and will serve research and pedagogical interests of attendees. Consistent with the first and second Americas Conferences in 1995 and 1996 respectively, the AIS'97 Program is intended to be varied, where the only restriction is that submissions address organizational or technical research, practice, or pedagogy in information systems planning, design, development, management, acquisition, implementation, usage, or evaluation. All papers and proposals must be the original work of the authors. Accepted submissions will appear in the Proceedings, in one to three pages, at the discretion of the program committee. For additional information on the 1997 AIS Americas Conference, please see the homepages referenced above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The dbworld alias reaches many people, and should only be used for messages of general interest to the database community.
