OBJECTIVES

The complexity of products in all branches of the manufacturing
industries, be it mechanical engineering, large scale engineering,
microelectronics or software engineering is constantly increasing.
Development environments have to support engineering processes involving
large numbers of people often at geographically distributed locations.
Crucial factors are to minimize product development times and to improve
process and product quality.

The evolving framework technology for concurrent/simultaneous engineering
promises to meet these challenges by providing IT infrastrauctures
enabling to build distributed engineering environments involving large
numbers of tools and to control complex engineering processes
effectively. The objective of the workshop is to present and discuss this
technology and its applications. In particular, the workshop will provide
the opportunity:

o	to get an insight into recent progresses of framework technology as
exemplified by several ESPRIT projects amongst them the two major
        ESPRIT projects CONSENS and JESSI-COMMON-FRAME;
o	to learn about a broad  range of framework applications;
o	to discuss specific technical problems and tasks where framewoks are
        expected to offer enhanced behaviour, functionality and performance;
o	to debate the future developments of an European Engineering Network.

THE WORKSHOP WILL BE ADDRESSES TO:

Present and potential industrial users of framework technology, suppliers
of this technology and researchers.

Subject: SIGMOD RECORD -- New Editor-in-Chief
Content-Length: 2001

Dear Colleague,

I have stepped down as the Editor-in-Chief of SIGMOD RECORD.

Submissions and correspondence should be sent to the new Editor-in-Chief:

Professor Jennifer Widom (widom@cs.stanford.edu)
Department of Computer Science
Stanford University
Stanford, CA 94305-2140

Below is a portion from my Notes in the forthcoming March issue.

-- Arie Segev

 Editor's (Farewell) Notes

This is my last issue as an Editor-in-Chief after serving in this capacity
for more than six years. When I took the job at the end of 1988 I set
five targets for the RECORD: 1) publishing it on a regular basis such
that it reaches the readers around the middle of the month of publication;
2) Improving the quality of accepted articles; 3) putting together special
issues on emerging research areas; 4) Encouraging contributions other
than articles, such as annotated bibliographies and workshop reports; and
5) Establishing regular sections such as the Database Research Centers Reports.

I am satisfied that I have achieved all those five goals. This, however,
would not have been possible without the dedicated service of the Associate
Editors. I would like to take this opportunity and thank the current editors
(Rafael Alonso, Jose Blakeley, Leonard Gallagher, Amit Sheth, and Xiaolei Qian)
and the past ones (Hank Korth, Marguerite Murphy, Timos Sellis,
Fred Sprinsteel, and Marianne Winslett). Won Kim. SIGMOD Chair, has played an
important role in expanding the regular sections of the RECORD, by introducing
the trade-press, database research surveys, and database standards activities
sections; I thank him for his leadership. Thanks are also due to several
students (and ex-students) who helped in the time consuming task of producing
the issues; they include Rakesh Chandra, Abhirup Chatterjee, Ajit Patankar,
and Leon Zhao. Finally, I welcome the new Editor-in-Chief,
Jennifer Widom (Department of Computer Science, Stanford University, Stanford,
CA 94305-2140; widom@cs.stanford.edu).

THE CONFERENCE
This conference provides an international forum for technical discussion
among researchers, developers, and users of database systems from
academia, business and industry. DOOD focuses on research in the theory of
deductive and object-oriented databases, the integration of
object-oriented paradigm and rule-based deduction to provide a single
powerful framework for intelligent database systems, and advanced
applications of such systems. This continues the direction established by
the three very successful DOOD conferences held in 1989 in Kyoto, Japan,
in 1991 in Munich, Germany, and in 1993 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Papers

Subject: FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS: Rules in Database Systems, Athens, 9/95

                         FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

                     2nd International Workshop on
                       Rules In Database Systems
                  Athens, Greece, 25-27 September 1995

(this information can also be found in http://www.ntua.gr/~timos)

Aim of the Workshop

Rules have been a major focus of research interest in database systems
for more than a decade, the initial focus on deductive rules and
integrity constraints being augmented by recent research into active
rules. The aim of this workshop, which is the second after a very suc-
cessful first workshop in Edinburgh (Scotland) in September 1993, is to
bring together researchers working on both theoretical and practical
aspects of rules in database systems, to examine the current state of
the art, to explore relationships between different categories of rule
systems, and to identify complementary areas for further development, as
well as interesting applications.

The workshop is organized by the members of ACT-NET. ACT-NET is a
"Human Capital and Mobility" network of Universities and Research Insti-
tutes funded by the European Union in order to foster collaboration on
research in the area of Active Database Systems. The network currently
includes Aberdeen, Athens, Darmstadt, Heriot-Watt, Karlsruhe, Linkoping,
Pais Vasco, Skovde and Versailles, and a non-EU member, Zurich. More
information on ACT-NET is available via URL
   http://www.dvs1.informatik.th-darmstadt.de/act-net/act-net.html.

Participation to the workshop will be limited (< 60) and is expected to
be composed mostly by authors of papers presented.

Scope of the Workshop

Papers are sought on topics including, but not restricted to:

* Active rules - theoretical foundations, semantics, architectural
     issues, rule design/analysis/simulation environments, execution
models and their performance, cooperative active databases, opti-
misation, real-time behaviour, quantitative and qualitative case
     studies.

* Deductive rules/integrity constraints - theoretical issues, imple-
mentation experience, optimisation, incomplete information, repair
     actions, deductive object systems, applications.

* Integration of active and deductive rules.

* Real-world applications and case studies.

Submissions can either be full papers (around 5000 words) or short
papers (around 2000 words). Authors should send 4 copies of papers to:
Prof. Timos Sellis, Computer Science Division, Dept. of Electrical and
Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Zographou
157 73, Athens, Greece (email timos@theseas.ntua.gr; tel +30 1 7728
180). Springer Verlag will be contacted to publish the proceedings in
their 'Lecture Notes in Computer Science' series.

Liberalization and Globalization of the world economy concurrently
with rapid advances in Electronics and Information Technology pose new
challenges and great opportunities. Some of the assumptions underlying
developments of industry, their locations, sourcing of raw materials,
marketing of the products etc. may need to be reviewed in view of the
emerging markets and new investment opportunities. The recent world trade
agreements focus on the trade of goods, although the service sector will
soon be affected. Moreover service industry is inherently transnational in
its nature, and characterized by a significant components of electronics
and information technologies. The increased productivity propelled by the
advances in Information Technology and in associated areas have direct
implications on the international division of labor and capital.
Communications facilities can attract industry to locations with
relatively lower labor costs especially when the exportable products can
be transmitted by a low cost communication channels. The excellent example
is the software industry. The Export Processing Zones, set up by many
developing countries during the last few decades may have a new role under
the changing economic and technological scenario of the world. Also in the
same context one can anticipate the changing role of Science and
Technology Parks. These developments add new dimensions to education and
human resources development, as well as to the transfer of technology. The
sweeping advances in communications and networking, in the form of
concepts such as "Information highways" along with "Information Free
Ways", the "Information Toll Ways" and issues such as "Information
Oversupply", "Knowledge Discovery", "Information Conflicts", offer
enormous opportunities and challenges to the way we may look at education,
technology transfer, and the environment. The Environment Information
threatens to grow to enormous size and complexity. It is essential to
come to terms with these for our sustainable future.

The working conference aims to bring together the academics,
technocrats, investors, and decision makers on a common platform and
provide brain storming opportunities to create and to exchange ideas and
information. The three day conference will have special sessions where
investors and hosts (such as special Export Processing Zones, Science
Parks, Technology Parks, Representatives of Governments seeking foreign
investment as well as Investors in Electronics and Information Sectors)
meet. There will be special sessions focussing attention on newly emerging
economies of Asia and the Eastern Europe. The conference is especially
intended to be interdisciplinary.

The conference seeks position papers on various aspects of
restructuring strategies. An objective of the conference is to foster an
integrated view of the advances in technology, emerging markets and
investment opportunities by encouraging scholarly papers and informed
discussions. Besides these papers are invited in the following (but not
limited to) areas: Information Highways, Multimedia Information Systems,
Re-Engineering Software, Digital Libraries and Specific Experiences with
Emergent Information Technologies. The proceedings will be published and
will be made available extensively. During this occasion a number of state
of the art workshops will be conducted by a number of internationally
established professionals. We have so far received proposals on Multimedia
Communication, Information Highways, Business Re-engineering and
Environmental Implications. The conference will be held at the AIT Center
Hotel and state of the art conference facilities will be available.

Bangkok, known as the City of Angels, is the Capital City of
Thailand. Thailand is known for the hospitality of the people and in fact
rightly called the land of smiles. Thailand is located at the meeting
point of two great Cultural Systems of Asia - the Chinese and the Indian.
Besides, being an important tourist destination, it is in the center of
the fastest growing economies of the world. Sight seeing, entertainment,
and accompanying persons programs will also be arranged.

             Call for Papers and Participation

ISDL'95: International Symposium on Digital Libraries 1995

                    August 22 - 25, 1995

University of Library and Information Science
             Tsukuba Science City, Ibaraki, Japan

Sponsored by: University of Library and Information Science

The issue of digital libraries is key to making global information
super-highways really work. Many digital libraries cannot be realized
without the integration of various information technologies. Social,
cultural and human aspects are also important in the implementation of
digital libraries. ISDL'95 will offer a forum for researchers,
engineers, librarians, information scientists, and users, all of whom have
different backgrounds, but who share equally an interest in digital
libraries.

Symposium topics will include:
 * Digital library networks based on high-speed wide-area network technology,
 * Storage, communication and delivery of multimedia data,
 * Digitization and database construction, using printed materials from the
social sciences, the humanities, and the natural sciences,
 * Creation, storage, retrieval, and usage of multimedia,
 * Information visualization and user interfaces,
 * The digital library as a collection of materials and a collection
   of information,
 * The digital library as an environment to support intellectual
   activities, and
 * Roles of, and restrictions on, digital libraries in communities.

The symposium will include invited talks and contributed paper presentations.

                      Call for Papers

                         LOPSTR '95
                Fifth International Workshop on
           Logic Program Synthesis and Transformation
20--22 September 1995, Utrecht, the Netherlands

Sponsored by the Network in Computational Logic

LOPSTR '95 is the fifth in a series of annual workshops, after those in
Manchester (1991 and 1992), Louvain-la-Neuve (1993), and Pisa (1994). This
time the workshop will take place in Utrecht (the Netherlands) and it will be
run in parallel with PLILP '95, the Seventh International Symposium on
Programming Languages, Implementations, Logics and Programs. LOPSTR and
PLILP will share invited lectures and sessions of common interest. The two
meetings will be organized by the Computer Science Department of Utrecht
University.

The aim of the workshop is to present recent work (including work in
progress) and discuss new ideas and trends in the following fields: program
synthesis, program transformation, program specialization, partial deduction
all in the context of logic programming. Papers pointing out the
relationships of the above topics with other topics in the field of automated
program development, such as: automated deduction, constructive type theory,
implementation techniques, inductive logic programming, meta-languages,
program analysis, program specification, query optimization in deductive
databases, software engineering, synthesis and transformation in the context
of other programming languages, are welcomed. Papers describing automated
systems for program development and overviews of recent work on the topics of
interest are also solicited. System demonstrations will be possible during
the workshop.

Authors should submit 5 copies of an extended abstract to the
following address by May 25, 1995:

Maurizio Proietti, IASI-CNR, Viale Manzoni, 30, I-00185 Roma, Italy
     Phone: +39 6 7716426, Fax: +39 6 7716461, E-mail: proietti@iasi.rm.cnr.it

The submissions should include a return postal address and an e-mail
address, if available. Submission of abstracts by e-mail is also accepted
(LaTeX or Postscript). Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection of
their abstracts for presentation at the workshop by July 20, 1995. The
accepted abstracts will be collected into preliminary proceedings which
will be available at the workshop. Extended abstracts can be completed into
full papers and submitted after the workshop by October 15, 1995.

LOPSTR'95 is the fifth in a series of annual workshops, after
those in Manchester (1991 and 1992), Louvain-la-Neuve (1993), and Pisa (1994).
This time the workshop will take place in Utrecht (the Netherlands)
and it will be run in parallel with {\bf PLILP'95}, the Seventh International
Symposium on {\em Programming Languages, Implementations, Logics and
Programs}.
LOPSTR and PLILP will share invited lectures and sessions of common
interest.
The two meetings will be organized by the Computer Science Department
of Utrecht University and sponsored by the Network in Computational Logic.

The aim of the workshop is to present recent work (including work in
progress) and discuss new ideas and trends in the following fields:
{\it program synthesis, program transformation, program specialization,
partial deduction} all in the context of logic programming.
Papers pointing out the relationships of the above topics with other topics
in the field of automated program development, such as:
{\it automated deduction, constructive type theory,
implementation techniques, inductive logic programming, meta-languages,
program analysis, program specification,
query optimization in deductive databases, software engineering,
synthesis and transformation in the context of other programming
languages}, are welcomed.
Papers describing {\it automated systems for program development}
and {\it overviews of recent work} on the topics of interest are also solicited.
System demonstrations will be possible during
the workshop.

Authors should submit 5 copies of an {\bf extended abstract}
to the following address by {\bf May 25, 1995}:

========================================================================

                         University of Glasgow

                   Lectureships in Computing Science

The University invites applications for one permanent and two temporary
lectureships in the Department of Computing Science. This Department is
top-rated for both teaching and research.

Applicants should possess the enthusiasm and ability to fit into a
dynamic academic environment, and should show considerable promise in
both teaching and research. Applicants for the permanent lectureship
should also have substantial experience in both teaching and research.

In 1995-96 the Department will launch a new MSc course in Advanced
Information Systems, covering databases, information retrieval, and
multimedia. For two of the appointments, preference will be given to
applicants who can demonstrate expertise in at least one of these areas.
Strong applications in other areas that match departmental interests are
also welcomed.

The permanent lecturer will be appointed on the Lecturer A or B scale
(#14,756-25,735 p.a.), at a point determined by age, experience, and
ability. The temporary lecturers will be appointed on the Lecturer A
scale (#14,756-19,326 p.a.). One temporary appointment will be tenable
for three years in the first instance, the other for one year in the
first instance. If the applicants are strong enough, consideration will
be given to increasing the number and length of these appointments.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Head of Department, Dr David Watt,
e-mail daw@dcs.gla.ac.uk. Information about the Department may be found
from its WWW page http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/.

Further particulars may be obtained from the Academic Personnel Office,
University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, Scotland (tel. 0141 330 5161, fax
0141 330 4921). Applications (three copies from UK applicants, one copy
from overseas applicants) must be sent to this address by 21 April 1995.
Each application must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, list of
publications, and names and addresses of three referees. In all
correspondence please quote reference number 8675.

publication and copyright will be required for accepted papers. Each paper
must have an abstract, a list of key-words and a separate cover page. This
cover page must include the title of the paper, full names of all authors,
their contact addresses, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses and
point of contact if more than one author.
At least one of the authors of the accepted papers must register for the
Conference and present the paper. Papers must be written and presented in
English.
The Proceedings of the Conference will be published by the official publisher
of IFIP, shortly after the Conference. A draft delegate's copy of the
Conference Proceedings will be distributed to participants at the
registration desk.

INVENT THE FUTURE
of Database Systems
at the IBM Almaden Research Center

IBM Almaden Research Center is located in San Jose, CA, in beautifully
situated rolling hills adjacent to Santa Teresa Park. Almaden Research
Center, in Silicon Valley, is close to top universities such as Stanford
and UC Berkeley, as well as key IBM development and manufacturing
units which develop database, disk drive, storage system, and multimedia
products. The laboratory fosters technical creativity and real-world
connections - an environment which has resulted in such notable inventions
as the magnetic disk drive and relational databases.

Our work involves generating new theoretical and systems ideas,
building exploratory systems, and working with universities,
product divisions, and selected customers. Our researchers work in
teams of various sizes, and are expected to both publish and to
reduce their ideas to practice. The research atmosphere includes
visiting faculty, post docs, students, coops, and an active sabbatical program.

The Exploratory Database Systems Department of the Almaden Computer Science
Department is looking for a few outstanding researchers with demonstrated
expertise in database systems. We are particularly looking for
systems-oriented candidates interested in:

- Data Mining
- Workflow and Advanced Transaction Models
- OODB/DBPL
- Multimedia Databases

Qualified individuals should have a Ph.D degree in CS or EE, or equivalent,
demonstrated initiative and research experience in the above areas,
a strong publication record, and a desire to work with others on real problems.

For further information, please send your resume, including list of
publications, and references, to

 NOTES FOR CONTRIBUTORS
-------------------------

1. Submission of manuscripts

Initial submission. Five copies of the manuscript should be mailed to
one of the two Editors-in-Chief: Dewayne E. Perry, AT&T Bell Laboratories,
600 Mountain Avenue, Murray Hill, New Jersey 07974, USA, or
Wilhelm Schaefer, Universitaet Paderborn, FB17 - Informatik,
D-33095 Paderborn, Germany. All submissions must include the contact
author's name; e-mail and street address; and telephone, fax and numbers.

Papers should be printed doubled-spaced and in font size of at least 10
points. Research papers should be no more than 12,000 words long.
Industrial papers should be no more than 3,000 words long.

Submission of accepted papers. All accepted papers should be submitted
to the appropriate editor, at one of the above addresses, in final form.
Accepted papers should be provided on disk if possible. Two identical
disk copies of the final version of the paper should be accompanied
by a hardcopy. If the disk and the hardcopy differ, the hardcopy will
be used as the definitive version. The disk must be labelled with a six
letter acronym representing the journal title (3) and the author's
name (3), for example, SPIDEP. The label should also include the date,
author's name, hardware and software used. Most software is acceptable
but WordPerfect, Word or Tex are best.

Illustrations. If illustrations are available in PostScript form, they
should be supplied on the disks accompanying the manuscript. Each
illustration should be supplied in a separate file. The Figure captions
should not be included in PostScript files.

Artwork not electronically incorporated into the manuscript should be
supplied as originals on plain paper for photographic reproduction. A
distinct black image must be supplied. Copies reproduced on raster
devices are acceptable only if they have a resolution greater than
or equal to 300 dots per inch. Drawings must be about twice the final
size and the lettering must be clear and 'open', and must be large
enough to be reduced in the same proportion to a final size of about 8pt.

Half-tone illustrations are to be restricted in number to the minimum
necessary. Good glossy bromide prints should accompany the manuscript,
and should not be attached to manuscript pages. Prints from existing
half-tone illustrations cannot be accepted. Photographs should be
enlarged sufficiently to permit clear reproduction in half-tone after
reduction. If words or numbers are to appear on a photograph, two prints
should be sent, the lettering being clearly indicated on one print only.

Colour illustrations will be accepted only if the costs are borne by
the authors.

All printed items of artwork or illustrative material should be clearly
identified on the back in pencil with the author's name and the Figure
number.

Copyright. Only original papers (not published or not simultaneously
submitted to another journal) will be considered for publication.
Copyright for published papers must be assigned to the publisher.
All submissions must be accompanied by a completed publishing agreement,
copies of which are printed in the journal or available from the
publisher or the Editors-in-Chief.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from
the copyright holders to quote material which has appeared in another
publication.

2. Points of style

(a) The language of the journal is English and the spelling should conform
to that of the Oxford English Dictionary, or Webster's New World
Dictionary for papers from the USA.

(b) The body of the manuscript should be preceded by a Summary (maximum
length 200 words) which should be a summary of the entire paper,
    not of the conclusions alone.

(c) The Summary should be followed by a list of not more than six key
words; these will be used to compile an annual key word index.

(d) The paper should be reasonably divided into sections, and if necessary,
subsections. Numbering of these is optional.

(e) Tables should be numbered consecutively and titled. The title should
be placed before the body of the table. All table columns should be
placed before the body of the table. All table columns should have
an explanatory heading. Tables should not repeat data available
elsewhere in the paper, e.g. in a line diagram.

(f) References to published literature should be quoted in the text by
enclosing the author's last name and the year of publication in
parentheses at the point of reference, e.g. (Dyer 1992). Where
reference is made to more than one paper by the same author(s) with
the same date, use the form 1992a, etc. Where three or more authors
are involved, use 'Dyer et al' in the text, but all of the authors'
names should appear in the list of references.

A list of references in alphabetical order should be typed out in full.
References should conform to the Harvard style, e.g.

Dyer, M. 1992. The Cleanroom Approach to Quality Software Development.
Wiley, New York.
Ince, D.C. 1987. The automatic generation of test data.
The Computer Journal, 30, 63-69.

3. General Notes

(a) Submitted material will not be returned to authors following
publication unless the material is accompanied by a request to
do so when it is first submitted.

(b) The publisher will do everything possible to ensure prompt
publication. It will therefore be appreciated if submitted text
and illustrations conform from the outset to the style of the journal. Corrected proofs
must be returned to the publisher within three days to minimise
the risk of the author's contribution having to be held over to
     a later issue.

(c) The editors and publishers do not accept responsibility for the
     correctness of published program code.

                     SSR'95 PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

Friday, April 28
----------------

11:00-12:00 Joint Session with ICSE-17:
            "Architectural Issues in Software Reuse:
It's Not Just the Functionality, It's the Packaging"
Mary Shaw, School of Computer Science
            and Software Engineering Institute,
            Carnegie Mellon University

            ABSTRACT:

Effective reuse depends not only on finding and reusing components,
but also on the ways those components are combined. The informal
folklore of software engineering provides a number od diverse
styles for organizing software systems. These styles, or
            architectures, show how to compose systems from components;
different styles expect different kinds of component packaging and
different kinds of interactions between the components.
Unfortunately, these styles and packaging distinctions are often
implicit; as a consequence, components with appropriate
functionality may fail to work together. This talk surveys common
architectural styles, including important packaging and
interaction distinctions, and proposes an approach to the problem
            of reconciling architectural mismatches.

01:00-05:00 TUTORIALS

       TUTORIAL (I):
"Software System Generators, Architectures, and Reuse"
Presenter: Don Batory, University of Texas at Austin
            ==================================================================
            Domain-specific software generators automatically assemble
software systems from libraries of components according
to architectures (or domain models) of well-understood domains.

This tutorial is an introduction to the GenVoca style of
domain-specific software system generators. We will explain how
GenVoca offers a prescription for defining reusable software
components and scalable architectures for domains of hierarchical
systems. We will illustrate the principles of software design and
organization that underlie these generators with case studies from
databases, communication protocols, avionics, file systems, and
            data structures.

This tutorial should appeal to researchers and practitioners
who are interested in designing reusable software components
and the relationship of reuse libraries to software architectures
            and programming-in-the-large software assembly technologies.
            ==================================================================

       TUTORIAL (II):
"Software Reuse Metrics, Reusability Metrics, and Economic Models"
Presenter: Jeffrey S. Poulin, Loral Federal Systems
            ==================================================================
This tutorial will explain how to apply reuse metrics, reuse
economics, and reuse Return-On-Investment (ROI) models in diverse
organizations and programming languages. The tutorial will
            help answer the questions:
            1. How do we measure the level of reuse on a project? How to handle
generated code, COTS, internal vs. external reuse, etc.
            2. How do we quantify the financial benefits of reuse? How to
justify reuse investments based on cost-benefits, ROI, etc.
            3. How do we identify the most reusable components? How to locate
reusable components in existing code and how to build for reuse.

            Target audience:

The tutorial addresses the real-life issues faced by software
development managers and reuse practitioners when implementing
            reuse metrics.

       TUTORIAL (III):
            "Object-Oriented Re-Architecturing of Legacy Systems"
Presenters: Roland Mittermeir, Klagenfurt University (Austria)
Harald Gall, Vienna University of Technology (Austria)
Rene Klosch, Vienna University of Technology (Austria)
            ==================================================================
Modernizing old software helps to gain control of future
maintenance cost, to improve system performance, and/or to adapt
software to a distributed or otherwise more efficient environment.
Achieving these aims by a complete redevelopment often yields
unexpected negative results. Hence, reverse engineering might be
            a suitable answer.

Object-orientation is one of the possible means for achieving
``design for change''. For extending the life-span of legacy
systems, changing its architecture to an object-oriented one
improves its structural quality, reduces redundancies in the
source code, and hence decreases maintenance cost.

This tutorial presents a roadmap for reshaping the architecture
of legacy systems. It gives hints and handles to find objects in
the classically structured source code, and shows how to dissolve
procedural systems into object-oriented architectures. A specific
methodology, COREM, is used as basis for the presentation.

           Target audience:

           1) DP representatives responsible for saving past investment
              in conventional software systems;
           2) Senior programmers seeking a brief introduction to the topic,
to re- and reverse engineering, or to basic concepts of
              object-oriented analysis or object-oriented design;
           3) Young faculty and students interested in this challenging topic.

Saturday, April 29
------------------
07:30-08:00 Breakfast

08:00-09:15 OPENING REMARKS AND KEYNOTE SPEAKER
                                "Impact of New Technologies on
                                the Effectiveness of Reuse"
                                David A. Fisher, NIST

            ABSTRACT:

This presentation will discuss some of the technologies being
developed under the Component-Based Software (C-BS) focused program
of NIST's Advanced Technology Program (ATP). ATP only supports
projects that have high technical risk with accompanying high
potential benefit to the U.S. economy. Eleven projects were funded
under CB-S beginning early this year. Several of the approaches
being pursued have potential for dramatically increasing the amount
of software reuse and at least one may radically change the way
software is developed and sold. In the long-term, the program
envisions fundamental changes in the structure of the software
industry. Additional project proposals are currently sought under
the C-BS program through May 15, 1995. Projects may involve either
evolutionary or revolutionary technologies and must demonstrate an
effective strategy and commitment for commercial success.

10:45-12:15 PANEL I: "Systematic Software Reuse:
Objects and Frameworks Are not Enough"
            Moderator: Martin Griss, Hewlett-Packard Labs
            Panelists: Ivar Jacobson, Objectory Corporation
                       Chris Jette, Ascent Logic Corporation
                       Bob Kessler, University of Utah
                       Doug Lea, SUNY Oswego

Panel Outline: Object technology (OT) is believed to be crucial to
achieving the long-sought after goal of widespread reuse.
Unfortunately, many people naively equate reuse with objects,
adopting it to ``automatically'' ensure reuse, but often do not
get much reuse. There are also many examples of successful reuse
using non-OO languages. Thus objects are neither necessary nor
sufficient for effective reuse. Without an explicit reuse agenda,
OO reuse will not succeed. In almost all cases of successful reuse,
non-technical issues such as management support and a stable domain
seem to dominate over specific language or design methodology. True
systematic OO reuse in today's OT requires several improvements,
including: reuse-oriented processes; extended OO methods to
            directly support domain, component, and framework engineering;
better understanding of the production of layered, modular
architectures; and methods for augmenting OO application frameworks
            with problem-oriented, scripting languages.

The panelists will explore software reuse from several perspectives,
covering process, organizations, methods, languages, architecture,
tools, patterns, and frameworks, discussing the benefits and
problems raised using OT for effective reuse. They bring a wealth
of insight, gained from many years of research, teaching and
practical experience in developing OO applications, tools, methods
and reuse. They have built several large applications and
frameworks in SmallTalk, C++, Visual Basic and other non-OO
languages. They have contributed to the use of systematic reuse in
several companies, and are engaged in developing new reuse enabling
            methods and processes.

01:15-02:00 Featured Speaker: "Systematic Reuse:
A Scientific or an Engineering Method?"
                              Ruben Prieto Diaz, Reuse, Inc.

            ABSTRACT:

Systematic reuse is both, a scientific and an engineering process.
The part of systematic reuse that deals with domain analysis and
model development can be cast in the model for the scientific
method: postulate theory, make observations, predict results,
conduct experiment, and validate or reject theory. Use of domain
models for system development and for creating and reusing
reusable components fit the engineering method: given a problem
need (from market analysis) specify solution, design, make model
or prototype, test, refine, make product.

In most engineering fields the engineering method is separated
from the scientific method; theories and formalisms have been
developed and proved by scientists in the natural sciences. In
software engineering, and specially in systematic reuse, both
methods are intertwined. The reuse practitioner must play
the roles of scientist and engineer concurrently. Reuse
practitioners need to see this distinction and make the proper
separation of methods. This talk will deal with the risks,
problems, and uncertainties of doing domain analysis similar to
developing and testing scientific theories and the continuing
revision of these theories when applying the engineering method.

Basic Interoperability Data Model (BIDM), and the RESOLVE, P++, and
CIDER component description languages. The panel will consist of a
short presentation by the panelists, each considering one of the
            following questions:

o What is a component description language/component description
model? - a brief description of some of the existing languages
              and models.

o What should be the relationship between component languages and
component models? - e.g. the 3C is the basis for several of the
              existing languages.

o Where do component description techniques fit into the
development/reuse life cycle? - what should be the relationship
between component languages/models and implementation languages?
              - how are these relationships supported by libraries etc.?

o What are the characteristics of a good component representation?
              - e.g. should they include formal descriptions - predicates; is a
              language independent usage discipline essential?

o How can we bring the current developments together? - what is the
relationship between the models, the languages and the UDM? - what
              is the way forward?

The panel will then be open to questions from the floor. The
direction of the questions will be forced towards the use of
current techniques, the convergence of the current developments,
and suggestions for further work in this field.

Although many of the panelists have recognized the similarities in
the work that they are doing, they have never been brought together
and forced to consider them. A single language and model for
component description would enable a reuser to describe store and
retrieve design level components and architectures, and translate
these to and from an implementation language representations.
Whether a common approach is possible or not, the debate is sure to
be lively, with many years of work and principles of development
embodied in the constructs and techniques that will be debated.

10:15-11:45 PANEL III: "Software Reusability and the Internet"
Moderator: Guillermo Arango, Schlumberger Austin Research
Panelists: Richard Conn, The MITRE Corporation
                       Bill McKiernan, Cybersource, Inc.

                       Scott Guthery, Schlumberger

Panel Outline: The focus of the software engineering community has
remained fairly stable for over a decade. The world of software
development has not. Computer networks and information technology,
on the other hand, are changing the way software developers
communicate and work. We use computer networks for private and
public communication, the Internet is becoming a primary medium
for information exchange. Trading and reusing software is an
instance of trading and reusing information. Communication-based
applications such as, electronic mail, bulletin boards, information
servers, on-line databases, search technology, and shared-board
applications are practical and powerful enablers of software
reusability and of the exchange of reuse knowledge. This applies
to private networks, subscriber networks, and public networks. The
scale and openness of the Internet is also setting new social and
            economic laws for reusability.

As a consequence, the assumptions about the established,
intra-company reuse process are no longer valid and new
opportunities are emerging. Some traditional reusability research
topics must be reformulated or disposed of. There are also new
problems, for example, how to develop applications that monitor
traffic, or network sources, and find new sources of useful
components; how to structure repository "yellow pages" in the
Internet; and how to standardize on component documentation,
characterization, and certification for the Internet market.

Locating "useful" components for specific application domains is
not a one-shot effort, it is part of a normal technology watch
activity that will be increasingly performed by automated agents
screening information through bulletin-boards, news bulletins, and
negotiating access to documentation with information-brokerage
applications. The search for customers will soon become a
pro-active, permanent activity. Agents with "knowledge" of
available components will monitor network traffic to identify
potential consumers. In effect, we will have components looking
            for reusers.

            BIOGRAPHY

Guillermo Arango is a Research Scientist and Manager for Electronic
Document Management at Schlumberger Austin Research. His activities

                                        Lessons Learned"
                                        Will Tracz, Loral Federal Systems
            ABSTRACT:

Software reuse is an intuitively appealing, yet seductively elusive
method for increasing programmer productivity and quality. The
road to reuse is uphill, to say the least, and filled with
numerous potholes, dead-ends, and blind alleys. In addition, the
cost of reuse is significant (often 2-3 times greater than
software designed for a single application). It is the author's
belief that in order for reuse to be institutionalized, the
following issues must be addressed: 1) getting top management
support, 2) modifying the software development process,
            3) overcoming non-technical inhibitors, 4) creating incentive
programs (carrot and stick), 5) establishing reuse measurements,
            6) developing reuse guidelines, and 7) focusing on a single domain
or application area. Furthermore, based on personal experience,
each of these areas must be addressed or the transition to a
component-based software development process will not be realized.
This talk will examine these 7 issues in light of lessons learned
by the software industry over the last 10 years.

In these pages you'll find information about the city, local
industries, shopping, restaurants, directions, universities, sights to
see, and much, much more.

Among the things you will find of interest in these pages are

o April Weather: The average rainfall is 2.4 inches, with the high
being 6.53 inches in 1991, and the low being 0.33 inches in 1956. The
average high temperature is 57 degrees Fahrenheit, with the record
high being 85 degrees in 1976. The average low temperature is 41
degrees, with the record low being 29 degrees in 1975. The "skygazing
mean" number of days are: sunny, 2.8; partly cloudy, 7.2; cloudy,
     19.9; and rainy 13.7.
o Seattle is 83.9 square miles in land area.
  o Seattle's 1994 population is 531,400, with the greater
metropolitan region having a population of 2,183,900. It is the 21st
     largest city in the USA.
o Major employers in Seattle include The Boeing Company (82,200
employees), Safeway Stores Inc. (10,000), Microsoft (7,900), Group
Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (9,000), and Sears Roebuck and
     Company (8000).

To get to the Westin Hotel

The easiest way to get to the Westin from the airport is to take a
Gray Line Airport bus (+1 206.626.6088). They go directly to the
Westin, stopping at a few other downtown hotels. As of December 1994,
the price from airport to hotel is $7 one-way and $12 round-trip.
Taxis, rental cars and public buses are also available; inquire at the
airport for details.

Call For Papers

Journal of Intelligent Information Systems
Special Issue on `Intelligent Integration of Information'

We are soliciting papers for a special topic issue of the Journal of
Intelligent Information Systems focused on interoperation and
mediation among information sources and their consumers. Intelligent
selection and processing of of data leading to the creation of
information, to the benefit of end-users, are the central topics.

Important are solutions that deal with:
o heterogeneity of representations, media, and semantics
o system architecture, components, and services to achieve
		interoperation
o tools, methods, and interface standards to build and
		validate modules
o implementations that demonstrate successes and problems
In any paper quantitative assessments and metrics will be valued.

Papers will be due 15 June 1995, and will be refereed with care.
Accepted or conditionally accepted papers are expected to be revised
by the authors to the satisfaction of the referees.

To encourage consistency, we recommend that papers use the terminology
that is being defined as part of the ARPA Intelligent Integration of
Information (I3) program. Having consistency should greatly increase
the value to the readers of placing related papers into a single
issue. That glossary can be found on

 http://www-db.stanford.edu/pub/gio/1994/vocabulary.html.
Authors without WWW access can request a copy from the issue editor.

Authors contemplating submission are requested to provide the names of
the candidate author(s), the proposed title, a one paragraph abstract,
and submission format to the issue editor by April 1, 1995. Please
indicate, if you wish, that you are willing share that information
with other candidate authors. The motivation for sharing this
information early is to let you explore the potential for
complementarity of your work, and, at the same time, reduce
redundancy. If we can be successful in such an interoperation, then
both more papers and more information can be presented within the same
page budget.

Electronic submission of abstracts and papers is strongly encouraged.
Kluwer Publishers produces its issues using Latex, so that a Latex format
for the paper submissions is desirable. If this is not feasible, the
editor will provide assistance. Latex style, and optional template, font,
documentation, and sample files for Kluwer small journals are available
for anonymous ftp from
     ftp ftp.std.com
     cd to
     Kluwer/styles/journals
get smj* (Note: smjstyles.tar.Z contains everything and more, 74Kbytes)
The same files, and author guidelines, are available for WWW users at
     http://www-db.stanford.edu/pub/gio/jiis/I3.html and .../gdl.html.

Important dates:
Intent to Submit Paper: April 15, 1995
Papers due to Editor: June 15, 1995
        Papers Selected: August 1, 1995
        Revisions Due: September 1, 1995
	Expected publication:	May 1996.

We are also looking for referees, please let us know if you are
willing to help.

Responses. suggestions, questions and intentions should be addressed
to the issue editor, Gio Wiederhold, <gio@cs.stanford.edu> or +1 415
725-8363, at the Department of Computer Science, Stanford University,
Stanford CA 94305-2140. or to the Editors-in-Chief:

Systems Engineering,, George Mason University, Fairfax VA 22030-4444,
